Promotional short to publicize the full-length film...
Doylenf16 August 2009
The narration tells us "it's a voyage you'll never forget." It's a short promotional piece for MGM's film of the same name starring LLOYD BRIDGES where a team of explorers searches deep under the ocean in a world of wonder beneath the sea.

The narrator goes on to describe "the majesty of nature" underwater as we observe various specimens of fish and their encounter with a brave film crew risking their lives to photograph the exotic footage.

We're told that the crew was on a modern scientific expedition while filming and scouting locations in the Bahamas and Australia and we see their specially created deep diving vehicle for actors and crew.

Interesting behind-the-scenes look at what appears to be a rather unusual film about seeking to prevent underwater earthquakes. Too bad the color photography in the short is rather murky.

It's pretty much the purpose of movie previews . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . to entice viewers into seeing the entire flick. However, this Making Of seems carefully crafted to have the opposite effect. Anyone watching the eight minutes of this preview drag by probably feels like they've ALREADY gone AROUND THE WORLD UNDER THE SEA at least two or three times, so virtually no one will feel like being a glutton for even more punishment. During this sampling, the narrator seems to be bragging about how many endangered sea critters have been rubbed out by the movie makers (including "59 tiger sharks in the Bahamas"). It's as if the voice-over guy for the next Disney Nature outing is touting an upcoming raft of recipes for panda burgers. Not only would this strike many if not most people as being in extremely poor taste, but it would also narrow the potential audience to Cruella De Ville and Igor. The rest of the promised "highlights" boasted about here are equally stomach-churning. Exactly who is going to jump at the chance of seeing smart and gregarious dolphins plant mines on the side of ships like Al Qaida terrorists? Does anyone really want to see FLIPPER make a mistake, and blow himself to smithereens? Just think about it.
