Season 1 Finale - One of the Series' Best Offerings
kgraovac31 October 2023
One of those Mystery Shopper-type services is critiquing Above the Top and everyone's a nervous wreck and putting on their best face. They all pass muster but there will be one casualty. The staff are shocked when Nancy announces it's her! Despite their dislike for Nancy, the girls all feel very bad but when Vicki suggests they offer some verbal tributes, there is awkward silence.

Lois must now assume hostess duties, and the best scene is when we see her become frazzled trying to keep the dining room running smoothly. Her promotion isn't winning her any points with the waitresses.

LOIS: (flustered) "How did Nancy ever DO this job?"

DOT: "WELL!!!"

It's a fun scene, watching the cool, level-headed Lois unable to cope. Even fatherly Mario isn't much help here, and just zaps her with a zinger. They all soon develop a new appreciation for Nancy and Lois finds out Nancy's dismissal was due to age discrimination.

There is another fun scene where they vote on whether or not to alert Nancy so she can get her job back. Of course, we all know the "Hell NO" was Cassie's vote and Ann Jillian can bring yuks from a simple line like "I don't WANT her back!". It's a relatable situation because they admit their new boss could be worse.

The gals track Nancy down toiling in a greasy spoon where she's dressed like Florence Jean Castleberry and they seem more embarrassed for Nancy than she is for herself. The scene ends on a lovely, touching note when hard-as-nails Cassie leaves a VERY generous tip, proving once again that she's a softie when the chips are down.

Marian Mercer has her biggest scene yet in the finale where she blasts the slimy guy who fired her. It's very satisfying and also sweet to see the girls backing her up for once.

This is the last episode to feature Susan Sullivan, Wendy Schaal and Bert Remsen and one of the best of the entire series. It's too bad they changed the format (and the name) when the show came back in October 1981.

SONGS: Sonny sings "A - You're Adorable".
