A very penitent Christmas
ShadeGrenade23 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The fifth and last 'In Sickness' Christmas Special begins where Season 5 left off; Alf and Mrs.Hollingbery were all set to be wed, but she refused to say the 'I obey' part of her vows and, after he insisted that she do so, stormed out of church. The Vicar ( Philip Stone ) is cross with her, insisting she do penitence for her 'sins'. To Alf this involves cooking and cleaning. But she gets tired of being treated like a slave and rebels...

No Rita or Winston on view sadly, instead we have 'Mr and Mrs.Carey', played by the irreplaceable Hugh Lloyd and Pat Coombs, with Harry Fowler as 'Harry'. Mr.Johnson as ever cannot resist gloating at Alf's misfortune, but then it is revealed that his wife is in the process of divorcing him. It would be the very last time for Tricia Kelly and Arthur English. The show did not return for two years, and by then English was too ill to act ( he died in 1995 ). It was decided to replace Arthur with 'Michael', played by Irish actor James Ellis of 'Z-Cars' fame. Mrs.Johnson appeared only in the first episode of Season 6, played by another actress.

Strangely, neither Campbell nor Kelly are mentioned in the closing credits.

Funniest moment - Mrs.Johnson tips beer over her husband's head, Mrs.Carey does likewise to her spouse, and before Alf can cop a scalp full, the Vicar walks into the pub, so Mrs.Hollingbery has to drink the pint in one go!

Christmas Special

The final In Sickness and in Health has a lot of comedy actors of yesteryear present. Arthur English, Harry Fowler, Hugh Lloyd and Pat Coombs. Their comic timing is impeccable.

It is the day of the wedding but there is a hitch. Mrs Hollingbery refused to say she will obey her new husband.

It means the wedding is off and Alf loses the chance of getting skivvy for himself.

Father Delaney (Philip Stone) is appalled by Mrs Hollingbery's behaviour and gets her to do penance. Something Alf takes advantage off.

An amusing episode as it seems for once luck is on Alf's side as Mrs Hollingbery keeps getting caught behaving badly.

Eventually Alf's luck does run out. Mrs Hollingbery would rather hang for stealing a sheep than a loaf of bread.

The best bit was Arthur and Harry cleaning Alf's place out since the wedding is off.
