Run! Hide! Its the wife's mother!

Warning: Spoilers
One thing Eddie Booth has in common with Bill Reynolds is that neither gets on well with the mother-in-law. Fortunately, Bill's - Mrs.Benson ( Gladys Taylor ) - lives in Trinidad, while Eddie's is a bit closer to home. When Eddie is told in the Club that "she's arrived!", he takes it to mean Joan has given birth to a baby daughter. Imagine then his horror when he goes home the worse for drink and finds the old cow has moved into the spare room.

Determined to prove he is the boss in his own house, Eddie throws her out. She does so, only to take Joan with her...

We saw Eddie's mother ( played by Patricia Hayes ) in the 'Neighbour' movie, here we get Joan's, and as played by the late Fanny Carby ( later to play Vera Duckworth's mother in 'Coronation Street' ) a horrific creation she is too. The sort of woman who whenever invited to somebody's house runs her fingers along the furniture looking for dust so she can write 'Kilroy was ere' in it. Not much is done with the character, sadly. I was hoping she might stick around so as to give Eddie someone other than Bill to insult. But she's barely on screen.

Funniest moment - in one of the rare endings where Bill comes off second-best, Mrs.Benson turns up at the Club unexpectedly and drags him out by the ear, sending Eddie into paroxysms of laughter.
