Better than last week...but not by much
thompson-nick2711 October 2020
This whole week I was so riled up because one of my favorite comedians was hosting and I found out Saturday morning that Jack White was the replacement for the musical guest. For me, this was the lineup for what I was hoping to be a key episode. Well...

The Cold Open was okay. I feel like they did more with the "fly on Mike Pence" angle then they should've. It started out great but it got awkward after that.

The monologue was amazing. Bill Burr never fails to make me laugh no matter how controversial his topics may be. I've been seeing a lot of divided reviews on his performance. It seems like people that disliked the monologue either (a) don't know who Bill Burr is or (b) have heard of him but never watched his stand up. If this is your first taste of the Burr, you might want to check out some of his standup before you dive head first into this (I'd recommend his stuff on Netflix, it's great!)

The sketches are scaring me. The only one I really laughed at was the last one (Samuel Adams Commercial) because it wasn't tying in any sort of political or social issues. Leave the politics for the Cold Open and Weekend Update. I like watching older episodes of Saturday Night Live (which are now all on Peacock) because it takes me away from the troubles we are currently dealing with and we can just sit back and laugh. That wasn't the case for this week or last week's episode. It wasn't uncomfortable. It was just awkward. The writing combined with the timing of the cast is not good. I really like the cast, but I feel like the writing has taken a huge hit.

Another aspect of SNL that I think has taken another blow was Weekend Update. But this week's was actually very funny. I think I'm starting to like Colin and Michael as WU hosts (but let's see if that changes next week!) Kate's performance was funny and reminded us that we might not be okay during these times but we can try our hardest to cope with it. I don't know if it's just me, but I find Pete Davidson to be hilarious in his rants on the show so I enjoyed that as well. This was great week for Weekend Update and it even has me excited for next week too!

Jack White was killer on the show. Performing a little bit of everything from his career. From his feature with Beyoncé going into a White Stripes classic. Topping the last performance with a popular Jack White original was just amazing for me and I was "fan-girl" the whole time during his performances. There were tributes to Eddie Van Halen towards the end of the show which was nice to watch.

Overall, I thought this was an okay episode. I might watch it again and just skip over the sketches because honestly that might make my experience a bit better than when I saw it live on TV.

For next week, I don't know who the host is but I've been hopping on the Bieber train lately so I'm secretly excited for his performance.

Two Legends

2 of our most authentic, hard working and brilliant entertainers delivered with the monologue and musical performances. There were a couple solid skits (Sam Adams and Noon normal). Update had the usual great jokes from Che and Jost and Pete Davidson was very good as well with his self deprecating remarks and sharp observations.

C*m Town Theft

For those who don't know, the mafia sketch was stolen from a podcast called C*m Town. They stole another bit from them in the John Krasinski episode. It was the Ratatouille skit.

Has SNL lost its way for good?

Some good ideas, some decent writing, but the timing was horrible, they were way off in every live sketch. What is happening? This was like watching a high school improv show.

Auto Pilot
Barry016911 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's like the show is on auto pilot, but where to begin? Bill Burr's monologue was horrendous, offensive and out of touch (not to mention not funny). Jim Carrey is awful as Joe Biden -- it's less of Jim Carrey doing Biden and more Jim Carrey doing Fire Marshall Bill doing Joe Biden. And when Kenan Thompson joined Jim Carrey on "Pence'ss" head, it was clear that Kenan is a much better actor. Most of the show plodded along without any direction. Kate McKinnon saved Weekend Update with what appeared to be an unscripted moment. Was Lauren Holt hired to fill in when Aidy isn't available? She seems to copy her style, her expressions, her character -- on a much weaker scale. And I've never understood the appeal of Jack White.

When the band isn't laughing at the monologue...
robbob-3769526 November 2020
Right off the bat it's an uninspiring and unfunny yell fest of an angry, hate filled bigot. First sketch is another angry yell fest. Bill's negative dark humour would be more appropriate in good times but not now. Jack White and his band mates were on fire. Weekend Update was hilarious as usual especially with Kate and Pete. Basically skip over everything with Bill Burr in it

Missed the mark this time
tfc4 July 2021
Normally SNL does a descent job being funny and imaginative, but this episode was not up to their usual quality. It seems they tried to push the envelope of comedy too hard and only succeeded in ripping the message. Forced funny. Kind of like going to a concert and they use trash can lids for cymbals. It just seemed off flavor and technically they made jokes, but you sit back and go "was that it"? Over the years SNL have produced some gems and you appreciate the work that went into the comedy and sometimes you don't see their humor.
