Maddy coughs
Alex gets trapped
Alex and Maddy walk out
This episode is definitely the best episode of this series so far. I loved the sense of mystery and thriller that was very distinct from the previous episodes, which were or less human drama with little elements that felt "creepy" as it did in this episode. I thought for a moment that the show has sort of lost touch on its initial main theme of abuse. However, the show successfully intertwined its primary theme of motherhood with abuse using Barefoot Billy's house as a thematic device. This eventually helped Alex realize that Hank was abusive towards Paula when she was young. Alex responds by rejecting the apparent kindness (most likely out of guilt) that Hank has shown when Alex and Maddy had nowhere to go due to the mold.
It was interesting to see the representation of generational abuse -and both Paula and Alex are battling that in their own ways. Honestly, this made me look Paula at a different light. She's gone through a lot, too. This brings up the topic of motherhood as well. Through Alex's lens, we see how motherhood is almost always a challenge that requires much sacrifice. What Alex and Maddy are going through are very real and plausible that the audience is drawn to the infuriating sequence of events and start rooting for them.
One thing I do want to point out is that sometimes music is a hit or miss on this show. Some of the pop backgrounds just didn't fit at all, especially towards the ending scene. But overall, very very solid.
