Give it a miss
Yet another poor low budget war film (although it supposedly cost over a million) The action takes place in the jungle so the crew put a yellow filter on to show us it's abroad, that and the fact a lot is shot in the dark (gloom vision) makes it hard watching to start with.

Add in a cast most of which are 30 years too old to have even been fighting there and the poor acting and amazingly clean uniforms and you have a recipe for box office failure.

I couldn't find out where it was filmed but it's not Ramree island.

The boredom of Ramree island...
paul_haakonsen5 August 2021
When I stumbled upon this 2021 movie "Saltwater: The Battle for Ramree Island" from writer and director Steve Lawson, I must admit that the fact that the cover had a massive crocodile on it and that it stated "based on actual events" made me want to watch it.

But of course I was having that gnawing voice at the back of my head telling me that this will be another bad creature feature. But still, I opted to sit down to watch it.

And as it would turn out, then "Saltwater: The Battle for Ramree Island" was indeed a bad creature feature. In fact, it is a not a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on.

The movie takes place during the year of 1945 where we follow a very small British task force trying to make their way to a Japanese installation on some island. But they have to make haste and cross across swamp land to get to their objective. But the swamp is the territory of ferocious crocodiles.

Now, it should be said that the movie didn't really have all that much action with crocodiles in it. It was mostly just the audience following the British soldiers as they sat around bickering or accusing each other for their predicament. So it was essentially more of a boring drama than it was an action movie.

And whether or not this movie is actually based on true events, I know not, nor do I really care after having seen the movie. But if British troops did lead a battalion of Japanese soldiers into crocodile infested swamplands would be a nifty tactical way of thinking outside the box.

The acting in the movie was nothing to write home about. I am sure that the actors were doing their best, but they virtually had nothing solid or noteworthy to work with in terms of script, storyline, dialogue or interesting characters.

"Saltwater: The Battle for Ramree Island" lands a generous two out of ten stars from me.

I love a good creature feature...
jmckay-461197 June 2021
Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them.

This was based on actual events; the unsubstantiated claims that thousands of Japanese soldiers were eaten by crocs on Ramree Island.

For a thriller, suspense, action movie there is relatively little action, hardly any suspense and no thrills at all.

I live for these types of movies; Blackwater (and it's sequel),Primeval, Lake Placid (and it's many sequels), Croc, but this was just a snoozefest. Even Crocodile Dundee was more exciting than this movie.

I can usually find something redeeming in most bad movies. This one, not so much.

Pathetic. Makes low-budget war movies seem fantastic. Tripe.

Truly terrible
Twmffat2 June 2021
I've seen amdram Christmas pantos with better acting than this sorry affair.

The characters are unbelievable and unlikeable, the pacing is awful, gaping potholes/flaws, overall boring and utterly unenjoyable.

Now I *love* a good low budget horror/creature movie, but this film manages to give off a very "low budget" feel but not in a good way.

Was this directed by stoned children?
vegetagoku4 June 2021
I love Dog Soldiers, I have a fondness of Jaws and a guilty pleasure for the Lake Placid series. I had reasonably low expectations, expecting to see people get mauled to slivers by hungry crocodiles with a lot of banter.

I got a steaming pile of cat waste dumped on my face instead. It's based on actual real events, but gods sake, Tommy Wiseau can act better.

The only explanation is that somebody gave drugs to tweens and made them direct this yeast infected lettuce of a 'film',

Bleeding comedy.
Patient44423 June 2021
Well well well, finally a found of my own, a The Room, a Plan 9 from Outer Space, a movie that is genuinely bad, and not intentionally.

Truly so many moments when you're just: This is not possible, this is just not happening! But Oh No! It is possible, it is happening and even so, it's going and going for more!

Once I realized there is no point in taking this seriously, I really let myself go and just had a laugh. Bloody hell I laughed, I giggled, I genuinely had fun because it is amazing how much Saltwater takes itself seriously, while giving you gems like: people that are in just over the ankles water, get pulled under by crocodiles. Crocodile close ups of clearly baby crocs taken from other footage or perhaps taken in a zoo. Characters that make no sense but are there and genuinely feeling the tension of the situation.

I mean come on, you have to take this as a laugh and just go all the way with it. It was fun and I do recommend it in a small group, perhaps even a drinking game for every time the word "bleeding" is there to replace the f bomb.

Cheers!

Terrible rendition of a real incident.
Scott69918 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In 1945 during the Battle of Ramree Island an estimated 500 Japanese soldiers entered the swamps of Ramree island, Burma, according to the stories less than 20 of them emerged. Death came to them from many different sources, scorpions, disease, drowning and of course the crocodiles. I have read many stories of this battle, many were first-hand witness stories that told of the horrors they heard in the swamps. They could hear the crocodiles attacking the Japanese soldiers, and the tale tell sounds of the crocodiles doing the death roll as they attacked the Japanese. This has nothing to do with that battle except name only, they only show two Japanese soldiers and they don't even die by their crocodiles. That said, I watch this in hopes it would be a good rendition of the story, it isn't. They could've set this horrible human disaster story in any situation, four British soldiers, one of them being an Indian, whom I was rooting for, go into the swamps and bicker, fight and act stupid. I ended up fast forwarding hoping to find anything about the real story . I took this bullet for you, I implore you do, not watch this garbage.

Kindof funny in a bad way
pipo-4 June 2021
Terrible movie what we have here is a cut scene type movie, they film in one location and add about 10 minutes of dialog, they they move to another location and add in another 10 minutes of dialog, (and repeat), the dialog is kindof funny at times but really not worth watching for it.

Barely any crocodiles in the movie and just really bad all around.

What really gets me is how they spent 1M (estimated) on this movie????

A gopro and some old war outfits are maybe 2k some new actors maybe 1k each a terrible script $200, pack of chewing gum 25c .....

I can think of 1M other places to spend 1M and this isn't one of them.

Stay away from this stinker at all cost!
psxexperten4 June 2021
The best way to watch this movie is with the sound down while wearing a blind fold.

I am honestly so shocked at how bad this movie was, that I won't even bother explaining it. Story was horrible, acting was horrible, effects were horrible, and the list goes on.

Anyone who gives this movie over a 1 or 2 was either a part of the movie, related to someone in the movie, or paid to rate it highly. Period.

Before watching this, take a look at other movies directed by Steve Lawson. Now you know why to skip this.

So Dull
dpbartee6 June 2021
Movie opens with a clip of a C-130 (introduced in 1954) and this is a WW2 film! It should be free on Amazon or better yet sent down to PlutoTV.

This could be a development
nogodnomasters11 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Four British soldiers are on an island doing recon work but have to battle crocodiles in order to do it. Internal drama is created by making one of them Indian.

Very boring. Not much of a war film. More like a gator horror film that never got its legs.

Guide: F-word.

The best of the worst
Glasgow_joe24 June 2021
Ok so we know it's low budget nonsense but I thought the two main actors worked well together- they tried and their delivery was good. Compared to some of the drivel about at the mo this was partly palpable - it won't win any awards but neither was it lines just delivered as from lumps of wood. & neither did it look like a school project.

The film is uninteresting and a waste of time
saifullahsuradi12 June 2021
The film is not fun at all from start to finish. The movie only tells the story of people eating crocodiles and about the Japanese colony, but the Japanese soldiers shown are only 2 people,One by one, an English team and an Indian ate crocodiles to no avail. The end of the review of this movie is very boring.

Not the worst I've ever watched but pretty damn close
mialouise121 April 2022
I was hoping the movie was better than the reviews but sadly I have to agree with others. The acting is cringeworthy and the "action"scenes are horrible.

Low budget film, not worth watching due to bad acting and poor camera shooting technique!
meydiana-6524215 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What are the benefits of film? To entertain the audience, then why am I not entertained at all? Yes, I laughed a lot and this movie was funny. Not because the comedy acting in this film is funny, but it's very funny because the acting of the actors is very bad, stiff, and the dialogue skills seem to memorize the text very well! Then, to take part of the crocodile scene. It looks like it's just a Copy Paste from a flora and fauna film then edited in this film and rendered.... Very disappointing!

Disappointed
spencebnew22 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched this because it was one of my grandads war stories.

Not sure what part of this was based on reality though.

He told me they were all lined up to attack at dawn and heard screaming and shooting all night.

Turns out that the cross zte the jzps so that the troops never needed to worry Bout assaulting their positions.

This film is nothing like that and I struggle with a sergeant that allows people to call him sir without correcting them.

Terrible movie. Not even ironically fun to watch.

As the title of this review implies, don't bother. Use your money on something more enjoyable. It's nonstop dialogue, awful acting, and nearly zero crocodile appearances.

Cheap as chips
Leofwine_draca28 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Another cheapie from a director who started out making homemade movies in the 1990s. It seems his budgets haven't got much bigger. It's posited as a war thriller with a squad avoiding Japanese soldiers in the jungle, but it's just chit-chat throughout and a few crocodile shots. The anti-racism sub-plot reminded me of ENEMY MINE and is the best part of this, probably the only interesting part.

Indians accent was excruciating
cujorocky1 November 2021
Omg. The constant 15 minute reminiscences were bad enough, but the Indians accent made it unbearable. Your average person can stand an Indian accent for 2 or 3 minutes, but this was horrible.

will give it a shot..
rago-522192 June 2021
I Have learned never to go by the reviews here anymore.most times.

Lot of impatient viewers that need constant action or the movie is a waste of time.

Leaving 5 stars because a rating is required but have not seen it yet.

Point is i will and make up my own mind.
