Lex tells Clark and Lana: "Do you know what people remember about the greatest star-crossed romances? Not how the lovers met, but the way the relationship tragically ended...." One other example would be William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which ends with the lovers committing suicide.

In the episode Winslow Schott is seen talking to a dummy and using a monkey that claps, this is the Toyman's iconic items he's used in not only CW's Supergirl "Childish Things", but also in the Batman The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, and The Batman.

Chloe states serious moral concern about killing a man when speaking to Oliver in the hospital, yet a few episodes earlier this season she did exactly that. In Identity she walked into a hospital room and killed a man to keep Clark's secret.
