Armageddon 2008 Thoughts
Armageddon 2008 was the 9th and last Armageddon PPV event produced by the WWE. It took place on December 14, 2008 at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. Attendence was at 12,500 with a buyrate of 193,000. For an interesting card, this was pretty low. Guess it's the timing of Christmas season. The event most remembered for the wonderful moment of Jeff Hardy finally getting to the top of the mountain.
7 matches were in the card with the most anticipated being the triple threat match for the WWE Championship. Edge defended the WWE Championship against Triple H and Jeff Hardy. The storyline was huge of Hardy being attacked and someone continuously interfering in his private life. Despite all this Hardy still focused on getting to the top for the WWE Championship. Chris Jericho battled John Cena for the World Heavyweight Championship. Cena returned from injury a month earlier unexpectedly captured his first World Heavyweight Championship reign.
The Good - The main event was highly anticipated and it was an instant classic. I see a lot of opinions of this match being really good or just fun but I highly disagree. I find it a match of the year candidate and one of the best triple threat matches in WWE history. Jeff Hardy winning the belt was so special and Hardy is my favorite wrestler of all time. Him winning the gold was such a touching moment for any hardy fan. Crowd was also hot for that match and almost all of the card. The world heavyweight title match was also very good and this was a night majority of the crowd were full on team cena. I also liked the chemistry between CM Punk & Rey Mysterio who collided for the first time in WWE history.
The Meh - Batista vs. Randy Orton was an average at best. I think it was a bit too slow paced but it was still watchable. Surprisingly the two prior to this didn't clash much in their careers with the storyline recalling both guys being former allies. Mark Henry vs. Finlay was also somewhat of a decent match. Not too memorable though.
The Bad - Matt Hardy vs. Vladimir Kozlov was kind of boring as of course we had a Hardy having to try to carry a bad performer. The story was Matt intentionally letting time run out for Kozlov not to get a title shot at the PPV so his brother could remain in from the beat the clock challenge. Matt Hardy was the ECW Champion and his use on this show made him and the ECW belt look more irrelevant.
Overall - We pretty good closure to 2008. It was a fun show with one of the best moments of the 2000s. Even though Hardy unfortunately would lose the belt in just 42 days, his win this night will always be a highlight to remember. The rest of the card too did well for keeping audience and viewers invested in the show.
