Slasher: Flesh and Blood hits the ground running. Picked up by Shudder for its new season, the increased budget and energy is paraded wonderfully, immediately, with not only a lavish setting but the presence of horror maestro and legendary director, David Cronenberg.
Fans of the past three seasons will know whats up. Blending horror reference with an Agatha Christie sensibility and a healthy (s)lashing of soap, Slasher throws every SFX it can at the screen in the hope of making you flinch.
This time around, the Galloway clan is on the chopping block. An uber rich dynasty with skeletons bursting out the closet, the family is getting together at the behest of Cronenberg's patriarch, Spencer. He wants to restart the ultra-competitive games they used to play, in honour of his big news: he's dying and wants to pass his fortune on. Playing like "Ready Or Not" fumbled with the script of "Knives Out", the family is all ready to maim, ruin and backstab whoever they have to to get a hold of the riches. What they didn't bet on was the masked serial killer offing whoever loses. In brutal, brutal fashion.
This first episode sets up the main plot well, with leaving room for development and horror to come. Everyone is a suspect, everyone is a target. Those unlucky enough not to bear the Galloway name are destined for a swift death. But warring siblings Florence and Seamus might beat our killer to the punch. The stakes are set, the twists are coming, and a bloodbath is certain.
