What annoys me about some of the later 'My Family' Christmas specials is that they are clearly two episodes sandwiched badly together. It happened a couple of years later again with 'Mary Christmas'. It's almost as if they wanted a Christmas and New Year Special to be spread across the festive period, and then changed their minds.
Worse still is that in both cases one half of the episode is significantly better than the other.
In "Have An Unhappy Christmas" it's the first half that's the only bit worth watching. It's a nicely written piece about Ben and Susan getting stuck in a department store. Even the B plot involving the supporting characters is decent too.
The less said about the second half (an odd plot involving Susan getting an MBE) the better. It's very poor.
If they knew they were going to show just one episode why didn't they just write one big story?
