Mister Kaufman's heartache
dtucker863 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Seymour Kaufman Walt Whitman's principal is usually a world weary cynic with a dry as chalkdust sense of humour. However, in this episode you can tell his heart is breaking when he has to make a gut wrenching choice concerning one of his teachers. Elizabeth Brown is a lovable eccentric teacher a living legend at Walt Whitman who even taught Mister Kaufman and gave him an A plus five even! She starts to act strangely in class going off on bizarre tangents about past memories and even walking into Pete's class by mistake. Today her condition would be Alzhiemers but back then the term "senility" was used. This is another episode that deals with a sensitive subject and handles it very well. I was surprised that it was directed by none other then Bill Bixby. Oh my I hope no one made him angry when he did this episode.

The Senile Teacher

Miss Brown is an elderly teacher whose mind is beginning to fail.

One of the best episodes. Ruth McDevitt plays Miss Brown, her second appearance on the show but the last was a different role. Mr Kaufman was once her student and it is sad for him that he may have to have Miss Brown retire. Angela Cartwright (Penny on "Lost In Space") plays an A student that Miss Brown mistakenly gives a failing grade. This was directed by actor Bill Bixby, this was right after the end of his series "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father". A funny running joke in this episode is Bernie doing a Bogart impression.
