Where is Professor Sprout when you need her?
Howling_at_the_Moon_Reviews12 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not near a 10, nor a 1. People are really crazy with their reviews out here in these streets lol This was a decently entertaining movie that was a mixed bag as far as pros and cons go.

It was definitely a bit slow in the first half. It felt like they were trying hard to be atmospheric and tension building... but it more made for awkward moments and a slow pace. Regardless, it kept your attention and was intriguing. I did not however like how they very quickly showed the "monster" in broad daylight... I feel like they shot themselves in the foot with that as far as the opportunity to expand upon their creep factor went (also something about the costume looked a tad silly as well)

About half way through was when things got a little more exciting, but it is also when the story started to fall apart a bit. Not horribly in a detrimental way, but to the point where I was just lightly confused for the rest of the movie lol

The movie looked great minus a few night scenes that were just too dark. Also the casting was great. Everyone did a solid job and I really didn't notice a rotten one in the bunch.

Now, the ending... or lack there of. This ending is going to piss a lot of people off because there isn't much semblance of one. I can already hear all the angry 1 star reviews saying that this is a waste of time. It is not a waste of time... however, you do leave it feeling a little unfulfilled and gypped in a sense.

With this ending and the entire production as a whole, I do feel like it didn't quite live up to its potential. I think the foundation was there but maybe the execution lacked, creating some detrimental disservices that it didn't quite bounce back from. The ending almost had me knocking it down to a 4, but it really was a decent, middle of the road production. Would recommend.

solid indie horror until the end
SnoopyStyle28 July 2023
Cathy Madden is a divorced mom to a young son and a probation officer. She volunteers to take on Mary Laidlaw. According to the locals, Mary is a witch to be feared although Cathy refuses to believe in any superstition. When two kids go missing, suspicion immediately falls on Mary.

This is a British indie horror. The pacing is slow for the most part, but it has good solid spookiness especially from Mary Laidlaw. Cathy is an interesting and underneath troubled character. I was hoping for supernatural. This is fine. The ending is a bit muddled and I wanted a bigger fight. This is fine especially for a lower budget horror.

A very atmospheric horror movie...
paul_haakonsen27 November 2022
When I was given the opportunity to sit down and watch the 2022 horror movie "Mandrake", of course I did so. I had not heard about the movie prior to watching it, so I didn't know what I was in for, aside from the obvious deduction about it being a witchcraft movie of sorts, given the title of the movie and the movie's cover.

Writer Matt Harvey put together an entertaining enough script for the movie, however I have to say that I didn't really fully understand the meaning of the storyline. But it made for an adequate enough viewing experience, as the movie was genuinely mysterious and somewhat of a movie that slightly dug its way under the skin.

I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in "Mandrake", but they had some good actors and actresses on the cast list. And I will say that Derbhle Crotty, playing Mary Laidlaw, really carried the movie quite well with her performance.

Visually then "Mandrake" is low-key, but it works so well, because the effects are realistic, dark, brooding and have a somewhat ominous feel to them. And that works quite well in favor of the movie, adding a lot of atmosphere in the scenes.

While the movie's storyline was somewhat going above my head, then "Mandrake" was an interesting movie. Though I doubt that I will ever return to watch it a second time. But I will say that it is definitely a horror movie well-worth checking out.

My rating of director Lynne Davison's 2022 horror movie "Mandrake" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Folk horror that puts atmosphere over character motivation
Armin_Nikkhah_Shirazi16 December 2022
MANDRAKE tells the story of a probation officer who is supposed to oversee the rehabilitation into a rural community of a woman who killed her husband and went to prison for 20 years. The locals think she is a witch, and indeed when the probation officer visits her home, there are unsettling signs everywhere: her house is full of occult objects, she behaves rather strangely, and she somehow knows things, like that the officer has a son (who in the film displays symptoms consistent with cystic fibrosis) and that the father, her ex-husband, is the local police officer. Soon two local kids go missing and everyone suspects the "witch".

The biggest problem with this movie is that it does not make the motivations of the villain clear. What was the reason for the kids' fate? What did the villain ultimately want? What were the plans for the "mandrake baby"? If the two victims in the first part of the movie were meant as a sacrifice, how did the villain not consider the immediate consequences?

Some possibilities are hinted at, but the film does not rally explore them, so they end up being little more than suggestions for a guess. As the movie has a sort of open end, the lack of sense in the motivations of the villain becomes quite annoying. I feel like I spent nearly 1.5 hours watching a a sequence of events play out without understanding what drove it.

I like my villains well-motivated, so to me this is a fairly significant drawback. On the other hand, the film does a good job of going into unpredictable directions, and it is undeniably atmospheric. Fans of horror films which put a premium on atmosphere will like this film, but those who like to understand character motivations will likely feel frustrated.

Not Bad
gab-6759912 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just not great! The accents were SO thick I was happy it came with any subtitles at all, even if there was a delay of about 20 seconds. Now the movie, TOO dark even with the lights off it was hard to see at times. I loved the story, although it feels similar to another movie (Cannot recall the movie name). I wish they would have focused more on what happened to the lead lady in the end. End was left hanging and I hate movies like that. It was not bad though if you give it a chance and like horror you MIGHT end up enjoying it. But do not expect much to be explained, you will have to use your own imagination. No supernatural aspects, think real British ppl playing with evil magic. For the ppl rating this movie a 1, do they not see another number BUT 1 or what? Losers... It takes time and money to make a good flick and this was not horrible, save your 1's for the unwatchable movies like The Veloci Pastor!!

Awful
billcr1211 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I do not know how this film has a 5.4 rating on IMDB. It makes me ashamed of being partly Irish as it is one of the worst films of the year.

A woman known as Bloody Mary is released from prison after twenty years and a probation officer is put in charge of monitoring the woman. She places an ankle bracelet on her and she is told that she must not leave her home.

The house is a mess in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a wooded area.

Meanwhile, the probation officer is the ex-wife of a local policeman who is now married to a pregnant second spouse. Wife number one has a boy with some unexplained medical issues.

Two children go missing and, of course, Bloody Mary is a prime suspect.

What follows is just pure gibberish with a completely ridiculous ending. Avoid Mandrake like the plague.

Despite its VERY undeserved current rating, I feel this Folk Horror was very well done, and most effective...
lathe-of-heaven18 November 2022
I truly do not understand the lower rating here. Regardless if you 'liked' the film, I think just about anyone can easily tell that it is very well done. The mood and atmosphere, which I feel is of UTMOST importance in a Folk Horror film, is done quite well and builds a nice, creepy tone. That is only enhanced by excellent cinematography and very competent writing and acting.

I wouldn't say that this movie is among the VERY best of this type. Ben Wheatley's 'IN THE EARTH' and the family produced film 'THE DEEPER YOU DIG' are superiour, especially the fantastic mood/atmosphere created in the Wheatley film. But, to me the quality in the way it was conceived and executed is certainly far above average in my lowly and wretched opinion.

If you like creepy Folk Horror, I really think that you cannot miss in watching this film. Some have thought the 2nd half of the story was somewhat 'Muddled' and unclear, but to me I felt that specifically in the 2nd half, the motivations of Mary and what and why she was doing what she was doing were very clear. Also, without any spoilers, the ending I feel is definitely showing us what MAY happen and why.

I very much enjoyed this movie and for those who like this type of Folk Horror I would indeed recommend it!

Bored.
midnightmosesuk27 December 2022
This is going to be difficult. I have to use 600 characters to say how dull this film is when it can be summed up very easily in just 17 characters, "this is a boring film. So, by necessity, there's going to be a lot of padding, five hundred and eighty seven characters worth to be very precise. I could try using a longer word for dull, like tedious for example but it's only three characters more than dull. I wonder what the longest word I can find meaning dull? Hold on, I'll look it up....wearisome, that seems to be the longest word meaning dull. Unless you know better. So, I think that's about 600. That's good enough.

Calm and sharp
avindugunasinghe14 June 2023
Great collective performances of the Mandrake's cast sets the movie's standard high. Great dialogues not even the slightest overdoing. It's a unique story with an equally unique northern Irish setup. The remoteness and it's culture is fitting very well with the damp gloomy woods of witches. Cinematography is excellent intensifying the this folk horror story. Great visuals rich with the cold misty colour of the surroundings. Mandrake is a story involving a infamous criminal out of prison and a demon figure roaming marshland so that's a pretty good mix and it's all about people who become naive due to great expectations.

Mandrake
BandSAboutMovies20 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Probation officer Cathy Madden (Deirdre Mullins) has been assigned the case of Mary Laidlaw (Derbhle Crotty), a woman who's just been released from prison following the murder of her husband twenty years ago. When she first drives her home, two children are waiting, wanting to meet the urban legend -- she's a witch, so they say -- in person. Yet when those same two children soon go missing, Cathy learns she has so much more on her hands than a normal case.

Directed by Lynne Davison, this finds Cathy undergoing horror in her personal life as well, as her ex-husband Jason (Paul Kennedy) is remarried to a normal person who is with child (Roisin Gallagher) and even worse, Cathy's son Luke (Jude Hill) calls her mom. This is something that Mary knows and uses against her, taunting her with how much it hurts to lose a child.

Of course, there's also a demon, a wood baby made from roots and a town that wants to destroy Mary, who is now tied to Cathy through this horrific ritual.

While not the finest folk horror you can find, Mandrake is shot well and quite unsettling in parts. It's definitely worth a watch if you're struggling for something new to check out.

A Dark Intense Film
ladymidath27 November 2022
I love horror movies from the UK, British, Irish, Welsh and Scottish horror movies seem to be the most effective, probably because they tend to be more atmospheric and low key and don't go for gross out torture porn. Mandrake is a very moody and dark story with excellent acting and a very creepy musical score that helps build tension.

The two leads are very good and carry their roles well. It's nice to see a movie not relying on the typical damsel in distress trope, but having a strong female protagonist.

This is a very effective horror movie for those that want something a little different..

Not better than expected. But its not a mess either.
hyoga-4971815 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Im giving it 7, but maybe 7.5 to be more specific.

The cast was great, maybe that was the best part of it in my opinion.

The beginning is kind of slow. But at this point I didnt have a clue if this was pure crime stuff or real horror involved.

This is when the middle part comes in and takes the cake.

Talking for a 'capped' 7.5 potential, of course.

Then the movie, with less than 90 minutes total runtime, gets to the final part. No shockingly big twists here unfortunately.

And thats about it.

On a side note, I always kind of talk about the beauty of the girls in a movie? So here goes: I find the protagonist looks attractive, like a matured Emilia Clarke.

Cute, strong character and great actress 👍.

Now even the villainess has her appeal but I thought she was gonna be younger based on the previously shown picture of her. But yeah Im thinking the actress was a cutie back in the day.

Yet Another Derivitive Movie Comingvfrom Overseas
arfdawg-15 January 2023
In the past few years there has been a slew of psuedo-horror movies coming out if the U. K. Some of them have a comdey element to them, generally with zombies involved and others are just straight horror.

This one falls into the latter category and it follows the same exact format as all the others. Same atmosphere, same country setting, same slow build to nowhere.

It's just not original and becomes rather tedious to watch very early on.

As an example of the mindless boredom, there is a scene right at the beginning where a woman stares at another woman drinking tea for literally 5 minutes.

We get to watch her drink an entire cup. And not the little 6 ounce cups that are regular servings. This is a mug of tea.

Pouring mollasses is faster than the pace of this movie. And makes more sense. At least the mollasses goes somewhere.

The music is very inappropriate too. It's all mystical when nothing is happening!

It all boils down to this -- the actors arent the problem. They are relatively competent. It's the writing and the horrible directing.

We've seen this all before and it's been done better.

I wanted to like it...
fatamorgana-4020825 February 2023
It seemed like there was much potential to be had here but it just slipped away somehow. The film quality and scene locations were great, seeming to set everything up for a dark, twisted and impactful little folk horror movie. But it just never materialized.

Stereotypical characters followed a stereotypical plot and ended up at a stereotypical ending... if they had focused more on the woods and the mandrake and the evil magic at work, it could have been a great movie, I think.

This is a good "ten o'clock Saturday morning movie to pass the time." But I wouldn't recommend caring about it after 6PM.

Too bad, it felt like there was a lot of missed potential...

Enjoyable Film
dhalpert-2275212 November 2022
This is an Entertaining folk horror, with a tense build up with strong characters. The extremely creepy and scary atmosphere is well curated and it's obvious alot of effort has gone into this production. The film is well structured and had a satisfying ending.

I enjoyed the rural Ireland setting.which I felt have an interesting insight into the dark side of Irish folk stories.

This is a very decent horror story which doesn't rely on shocks and gore or a damsel in distress.

The performances are very strong and the production is a showcase for up and coming talent.

Conclusion is 5 stars would recommend.

Great gritty folk horror!
ommik20 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie! I liked how it was gritty, straight-forward, and quite unpredictable... yet at it's core it was a traditional folk horror witch tale.

What I enjoyed the most was that the movie didn't resort to the tired ambiguous "am I going crazy" quasi-psychological trope, but the witchcraft and the supernatural were presented at face value (which I find a rare treat nowadays). Also the brutality of the townfolk was presented well, and made me kind of root for Bloody Mary.

The ending could have been better thought out of and more imaginative, but I wasn't mad at it. Now it was more like this basic open horror ending.

I recommend this for anyone who loves witch movies!

Creepy Atmospheric Horror at it's best (minor spoilers)
aob_brctor878 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't care if movies make total sense or have some intricate plot to unwind. It has a plot and makes sense until the end, where I do wish thing's were wrapped up a bit more. My only complaint.

Anyway...

This movie has THE creepiest evil witch I've ever seen.

She isn't one dimensional at all. She's Evil, and that's her primary characteristic, sure. But we also see her tender caring side for her "philosophy" and her companion.

It's easy to even feel empathy for her, despite her heinous actions.

Loved the lead and found myself begging for her to survive when, in the second act, the story goes straight to hell (in a good way) and the terror explodes after master craftsman tension building.

Also found it hilarious and highly original to have a Probation officer who must look after a witch.

I loved this movie. That's all.
