MPAA Rated PG-13 for sexuality, nudity and action/peril

Sex & Nudity

  • Couple of obvious sex scenes between Aurora & Jim. In one scene, although brief, Aurora is on top of Jim and is naked, but this is seen from distant and it's too dark to see any details.
  • Although most sex scenes are from a distance and dimly lit, they are pretty graphic considering this is a PG-13 film.
  • This movie is rated PG or is recommended to a younger audience in many countries, despite its content.
  • Jim's buttocks are briefly shown, as he is standing nude in the shower, with the water running down his body.
  • Some kissing scenes, partial male nudity.
  • Couple of passionate kissing scenes between Aurora & Jim. However both are fully clothed in those scenes. No nudity is shown.
  • Jim is seen walking nude down a hall; however, his buttocks are only seen from a distance and for about 3 seconds. The scene is in a non-sexual context and features brief nudity.

Violence & Gore

  • Mild violence throughout.
  • A character's flesh is pierced by a shard of metal, blood is clearly visible.
  • A character coughs up some blood onto his hand.
  • A character approaches someone in bed, starts hitting and kicking him, and grabs a sharp metal object readying to attack him with it.


  • 1 use of "Sh*t".
  • A couple uses of "D*mn".
  • A use of "son of a bitch".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several scenes are set in a bar on the spaceship. The main characters are shown drinking alcohol; sometimes hard alcoholic drinks.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The anti-gravity scene is very tense and will be frightening to young children. See "Violence & Gore" for more.
  • "Passengers" is Rated K in Greece with a warning about the inappropriate material it contains.
  • Characters find themselves in a life-threatening situation and uncertainty/peril, there is no shortage of suspense, particularly in the latter half of the film.

Violence & Gore

  • A machine that generates gravity malfunctions, this occurs when a character is swimming in the pool; the water floats up, trapping her, and she almost drowns.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Gus's death could be a huge shock to children and the ending of the movie, with both characters being in peril and with one nearly dying, may be distressing to some viewers.
  • The scene when Aurora hit Jim when he was sleeping is very intense and sad.
