SF-Horror Thriller
Pairic19 April 2021
The Soul: Taiwanese SF/Horror Thriller which is also a murder mystery and several love stories, set in 2031. The Billionaire owner of a BioTech company is murdered, apparently by his own son. But it's no ordinary murder, Occult Sigils were painted on walls and the killer acted out a ritual as he carried out the deed. The boy's mother had committed suicide 2 years before whist also carrying out a ritual, believing she would return to curse her husband. The dead BioTech mogul's new wife is acting strangely as if possessed, saying she sees the dead woman's (angry) ghost. A family all unhappy in their own ways. The investigating magistrate leading the search for the guilty party has terminal cancer (this is crucial to the unfolding of the narrative). But it's not all Occult and murder, radical RNA transfer techniques are also mixed up in this SF Neo-Noir conundrum. Flashbacks are crucial to understanding what really occurred and with changing identities you will have pay close attention to the story. More than one viewing may be necessary to appreciate the fine details of the plot. There are also several twists and reveals as the intrigue develops. An intricate but engaging film. Written & Directed by Cheng Wei-Hao. On Netflix. 8/10.

The Soul
jackson_ro28 March 2021
One-of-a-kind Chinese sci-fi that sets itself apart by combining Chinese tradition, belief, science, love and crime. The solemn mood, use of color, futuristic setting are all gutsy attempts by the director, and somehow it works. Even more difficult is combining the protagonists' own love story with the main flow of the film. The casts were also chosen correctly, as a film like this, especially in the Asian market must be led by more "serious" actors. The ending to me is a little questionable, while it makes sense, but seems a bit out of character as well. Nevertheless, an impressive accomplishment of piecing together a believable future. Love the analogy of this science to Chinese concept of "soul", there seems to be a lot more than what meets the eye to this film.

Multiple twists
toddcha15 April 2021
I don't know why there are some bad reviews; perhaps it is not as thrill as they expected but I gotta say it's much better than some normal action thrills.

Multiple twists that you won't predict and they make the movie interesting. The plots are good; the acting mostly is good.

Some lines may be weird but they won't matter.

The time setting is reasonable; though it may not be as fancy as some other movies depict about the future.

Parts of the story did not explain well until later.

I gotta say MANY scenes the leading actors acted so well. You should be moved.

May feel a bit draggy in the beginning but you can survive this.

Say what?!!!!
Grigsby322 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe something was lost in translation but 23 minutes into the film one of the detectives tells the prosecutor the young wife, who was found laying unconscious next to her dead husband, the murder weapon in her hand, should be released because, "she's about to inherit everything and doesn't have a motive." Where, other than Taiwan I guess, could that statement make any sense.

Great movie damaged by a nonsensical ending. MAJOR SPOILER.
doubtitall7 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, the way to get 'her' (the billionaire copied into his young wife's brain) to confess was to replace the billionaire's mind with a copy of the dying prosecutor's mind.

But then why confess? The billionaire is ERASED. He is really dead and gone.

No need to confess. The copy of the dying prosecutor can now live his new life outside of prison as a billionaire widow.

'Confessing' just put an innocent person behind bars for life. Maybe the silly man thought he should be punished for murdering the double murderer (the billionaire killed his young wife and then his original self)? Absurd.

If the movie had been mediocre, I'd have given it a 2 or 3 for that, but I really liked it until that faceplant at the end.

Cinema Omnivore - The Soul (2021) 6.8/10
lasttimeisaw21 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Part cancer melodrama, part police procedural, part supernatural tosh, THE SOUL has an uneven pace before the seminal reveal of the twisted relationship between Wang, his business partner Dr. Wan (Lee) and Wang's young second wife Li Yan (Sun, who gives a well-calculated accent modulation indicating the identity shift), along with a fantastic notion of curing cancer with extracted RNA powders (who are you kidding?), and the even more incredible practice of soul transmigration (alright, if you say so!). Plus a lavender marriage in which the wife is cozened and goes mental and suicidal. To appease the censorship, the version played in mainland China is heavily expurgated, still, it is a pleasant surprise to see the same-sex relation is not entirely truncated, and THE SOUL espouses a strong sentiment that love transcends gender, but you are damned if you ruin an innocent woman for your convenience. (In fact, there are two such women here, both played by actresses from mainland China, should we read too much into it?)"

GRAN FINALE

Ideological nuances aside, the film conveys a message of love, honor, and justice (a bit skewed), but with a smart ending nonetheless.

Excellent. Refreshing
ehudmi26 April 2021
I just wrote a short scathing review of Stowaway.

This in comparison is how sci-fi drama should be done.

A plot seemingly simple yet twisting and surprising to the very last second and I usually spot the twists miles ahead... It even manages to blend woke elements without being ostentatious.

The cast is natural, the emotional drama is good even when a little over the top.

Mainland China and Taiwan are becoming heavy hitters in the film industry...way to go...

Solid sci-fi thriller
alain-kapel526 August 2021
An intriguing Taiwanese sci-fi mystery thriller revolving around a complicated murder case in the near future. I'll keep things short this time; this is a plot-heavy film that might be better the less you know going in. It is a skilfully made police procedural with philosophical underpinnings, sometimes flirting with melodrama but rarely in a corny, sentimental way. That might be because its core themes revolve around losing one's identity and facing death, and as such they are universal and easy to comprehend while giving the film more weight than you'd find in a standard police procedural. There's a whole lot of twists and turns here combined with some fast paced exposition so you need to be on your toes while watching this one, but in the end it mostly pays off.

So, in conclusion, this is a rather solid genre film with pretty good production values and a lot to chew on, but you also have to be able to suspend your disbelief a bit more than usual. Let its cool atmosphere and thought provoking ideas wash over you and you'll probably find yourself glued to the screen more often than not.

Interesting film
jinufrancis112 February 2024
Man from starting till finish this film is completely different twist and connecting film. They've made a feature film with the concept of RNA. (In this film RNA is like DNA, but it can be used in treatment for cancer cure). Everything in this film is connecting accurately. There's a reason why writer made the protagonist a cancer final stage patient cause it plays a important role. This film is way more interesting and the story telling is completely becomes more and more depth. The highlight is the hero's never give up mind and visual creation on crime.

Highly recommended if you're onto crime thriller films.

Messy plot with lots of near unwatchable over the top "emotional" scenes
Tamasaburo17 April 2021
This is more a typical asian TV drama with over-the-top acting and artless attempts to pull your emotional strings than it is a future hightech thriller, as advertised. All underlaid with sappy music and filmed in toned down colors, assumingly to show "its the dark near future". Some good acting, but hard to watch because of bad direction and the less than appealing script.

Not recommended unless you love asian (taiwanese/korean) tear-jerker TV shows. Nothing new to be found here.

Very original and compelling movie
Neptune1654 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wow just now i have seen this movie.. but only problem is the "names" hard to remember the character names. The film is almost a gem since the original plot and modified script are so rich; casting is in place, and the cast's performance draws the spectator into the story. Scene design, art, photography, editing, and original sound all deserve Golden Horse nominations since they provide complete immersion. Although the transition from fantasy to science fiction is a little stiff, the overall fault is not obscured, and the surprise is felt. This was such an excellent movie. Highly underrated. The plot is really new and original. There is a lot of twist and turn in this movie. You need to pay attention with the details in order to catch some important clues for everything to make sense. But the overall experience is great!

It's just okay
siewlimhan14 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The script is barely qualified, and the performances of the actors are really excellent, especially Zhang Zhen, who is awe-inspiring. It's the use of people as tools to make people feel bad. As a science fiction film, it barely passed; as a suspense film, it was not passable, mainly because of the poor ability of the director in telling the story. So...where is the pregnant victim's baby?

From good to bad to worse to nonsensical
Genkinchan11 April 2022
Chang Chen portrayal as a spine cancer patient is outstanding and although I haven't watch the other nominee.. I felt a well deserving Golden Horse Actor.. but the story line and script writer or the way he adapted the screen play came crumbling down... after half way through the first act... too much plot without substances... too much sciences at work..,furthermore the ending is nonsensical...

The city depicted in the movie is just not futuristic yet the world that they are living is too futuristic... it's just does not match at all

Too long winded although I managed to finish up the film... it is just not good... period.

Superb ensemble performance and editing makes this near-future-set film a heart-throbbing tear-jerker
actress_tw31 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"The Soul" is a bold adaptation from Chinese author Bo JIANG's science fiction novella from years ago. As a Sci-Fi thriller, the film skillfully turns the core concept of RNA memory gene duplication technology (from the writing piece) into a power engine that changes the fate of two families: One from LIANG Wen-Chao, the murder case's prosecutor unfortunately suffering from cancer, and A-Bao, LIANG's pregnant criminal police wife who is also involved in the investigation; the other from the tragically deceased medical group owner WANG Shi-Cong, his current wife LI Yan, his son and his ex-wife. Though it makes little sense for WANG's desperate ex-wife, a key bio-scientist at the medical group, to have indulged herself in the Oriental/Chinese wizardry as an escape from some unbearable truths of her life and killed herself, the film begins to gain momentum on its Sci-Fi track from about mid point and surprises us with more suspense and reversals till the end. If the intricate story based on the idea of soul-transfer or consciousness-transfer in the whole crime scene is far from being soulful, it at least exhibits how much soul-mates can and will do for each other, in the name of love. Superb ensemble performance (especially CHANG Chen, the main lead) and editing makes this near-future-and-Taipei-set film a heart-throbbing tear-jerker, which is a real breakthrough for the Chinese-language Sci-Fi films.

NOT CHARMING ENOUGH
jeromesgabilo6 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The premise was quite good: a rich businessman having a sinister past with his longtime friend and business partner. This was interesting enough. The problem was on the execution. Watching it felt like there was a desperate need to prove and overexplain what happened in the past. The flashback scenes were a bit of an eyesore. The editing did not impress me. And I also questioned to a great extent if the technology of transferring a man's soul into another was really doable. Normally, a great sci-fi film would make one ask one of these questions. But it felt ridiculous for me. The extensive use of dark cinematography was a down-side for me as well.

Black Box Taiwan version
ks-6050024 April 2021
I wasn't saying it's copy cat but the idea is quite alike. I would say black box is not in a detective story but using the perspective of the victim As a start. This movie too early to let audience have clue that what direction the movie will go to end but black box is more suspicious and exciting. Still good this one.

An average nothing interesting movie
mailtaskservice11 March 2022
Compared to other movies, this is too ordinary and average. No interesting stories nor any new elements.

The conclusion is total nonsense, thats why I reduced another star. I will not reccomend to pay to watch.

Best. Hands down. No contest.
jvincentnix28 February 2021
It takes a while to figure out how much sci-fi is embedded here. It isn't overdone nor amped up, and it isn't employed to fix holes.

No way you've seen anything like this.

I may never see anything better; for sure I never have.

Prep some tissues.

More like soul swapping...
bsant5417 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Taiwanese Noir filming give it a unearthly feel as if on the verge of darkness yet the story was about love, redemption and when the time has come to make amends.

Set in the not too distant future 2031 with a corporate exec dying from brain cancer that can use RNA tech to swap his mind into that of another person. At the same time a Prosecutor also dying of brain cancer tries to solve the murder of the exec.

I will not spoil it for you but persons of interest are the dead ex-wife that hopes lore can let her seek revenge against the exec, their crazed child blaming the exec for his mother's death and a business tech partner with ties to the exec other than business.

The Prosecutors wife a policewoman is the last person standing in the corporeal.

I will not spoil this whodunnit other than to suggest you bear in mind the title of this review right up to the very last second of the movie.
