Striking indie tragicomedy

Warning: Spoilers
An addled young musician hopes to make money through busking and performances. Quite often he hopes in vain. After catching a glimpse of a gangland murder he tries to flee. However, he keeps running into the same insolvency problem...

A very interesting indie, this one. The plot deals with the running-away-in-circles odyssey of a young man who is not too bright, not too well-balanced and not too sober. Along the way he meets a variety of people, some of whom are reasonable and helpful, some of whom are not. As the movie progresses, the protagonist inspires both pity and hilarity, in varying doses. It is only near the end that the viewer grasps the full severity of the man's inability to make sense of factual reality. (Watch out for an excellently plotted surprise twist.)

Perhaps part of the tale can be read as some kind of reverse version of the Christian Epiphany. Epiphany is the feast devoted to three wise men who had a profound spiritual experience that made them even wiser. Here you've got a lost and foolish youth encountering a singularly debauched "priest" who gives him bonkers advice and fries his last remaining brain cells. The outcome is not a positive one.

"Lost and spaced" comes packaged in a stylish, visually inventive look that enhances the feeling of nightmarish dislocation. A few hours of this would probably grow tedious, but in its current form the movie is concise enough to remain fresh and arresting.

Looking forward to more work by the director and by the lead actor.
