Was actually better than I expected
Supermanfan-1315 July 2023
The Lincoln Lawyer was actually better than I expected. I never read the books this was based off of but I did watch the Matthew McConaughey movie and thought it was pretty good but not worth making a series over. I really expected this to be some low budget rip off. I couldn't have been more wrong. I actually enjoyed it more than the movie. I wasn't going to watch it until I saw all the great reviews and that it was one of the most watched series of the year for Netflix. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo does a good job as the lead and Becky Newton, Neve Campbell, Angus Sampson, among others all do a fantastic job in supporting roles. While it's not the best lawyer show you'll ever see, it's definitely still worth watching.

Had fun watching this
Rob133115 July 2023
I have to say I really had a good time watching The Lincoln Lawyer. It's about a down on his luck lawyer named Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) who takes over a successful practice after the lawyer in charge is murdered and leaves his entire practice including all his clients to Haller. Haller mostly world out of his Lincoln town car (hence why he's called The Lincoln Lawyer). He takes on all Tyler's of cases, some big some small. Even though some of it's unbelievable, you'll still have fun watching this. This show did so well that it was quickly renewed for season 2. Season 2 just came out and so far it's just as good, if not better, than the first.

A winning formula
bosporan13 May 2022
A drug rehabilitated lawyer with two ex-wives a daughter and penchant for cars is thrust front-and-centre into a high profile case following the death of a friend. This comes complete with a practice and more secondary cases than he can cope with.

This intriguing premise sets up an opportunity-filled backdrop for a legal procedural series. The show takes this, adds a strong cast, well crafted and delivered dialogue and an interesting plot and runs with it at a good pace.

Some cinematography choices are awkward, particularly the shots with variable focus and some orange casts, though overall it functions as required. Mickey's driver, Izzy is often used as a plot explanation device, but despite being obvious, feels natural and in keeping with the storytelling.

This is end-to-end engaging, entertaining and enjoyable - highly recommended.

Why the low rating?
Cinephilia150816 May 2022
Ok i just finished this show and i am still not understanding why people have given it low ratings. It deserves at least 8-8.5 for sure.

I was very skeptical about watching this because of low ratings and not so good reviews but i thought let's give a try to couple of episodes and then decide.

I end up watching 6 episodes in a go.

I have seen THE LINCOLN LAWYER movie and we all loved Matthew McConaughey so Manuel Garcia-Rulfo was looking like a wrong cast.

I think he is also one of the reasons not enough people are watching this show because he is not a big name but he is actually good as The Lincoln Lawyer.

I liked his acting and surely will check out his other work as i also don't know him much.

And about the show it has all the ingredients for a crime thriller drama.

The acting, the pacing of the show and the production everything is good.

If you like shows like BOSCH or other court-room shows give it a try and you will end up liking it.

Waiting for the 2nd season.

Let's hope Netflix won't cancel it.

It deserves more attention & love than it's getting.

Some movies and shows get unnecessary hate and this show is one of them.

Great, Enjoyable Show
albertval-6956016 May 2022
This is an enjoyable first season of the show that's based on Michael Connelly's novels. The tandem of David Kelley and Ted Humphrey succeeds in bringing to the screen the gritty story of smart defense lawyer Mickey Haller, his associates and family.

The viewer identifies with the ups and downs of Haller's legal career. But one is impressed by his passion for the law and genuine concern for his clients. The movie is able to capture his deep humanity amidst his flaws. Aside from Haller, all the other major characters are relatable: Cisco, Lorna, Maggie, Trevor Elliott, Hayley and even detective Griggs.

The plot lines are well-conceived and quite entertaining. The twists pique the viewer's attention while the drama resonates. In particular, the way Haller is able to unravel the magic bullet, connecting one crime to another, and use it at trial is ingenious. Serious students of criminal law and procedure will definitely appreciate the law and the free tutorial it offers them.

Bring Season 2 on. We can't wait to find out more in the life of Haller and company.

Great series, want more!
nhermida16 May 2022
For those of us who like lawyer/police/detective stories, this was perfect. I couldn't stop watching, and very tempted to give it an even better star rating ... (I may come back and change it, but I'm generally stingy in that area).

In general, anything I've read or seen by Michael Connelly has been very good.

Don't understand why there are some bad reviews. Can't wait for more Lincoln Lawyer series.

I like The Mexican Lead
zorroaca16 May 2022
Very bold to give Manuel Garcia-Rulfo the lead... and it seems that it's hard for a lot of folks to take in... but his soft approach does the job and he's a great fit for LA. It seems that the entire character development was a gamble... I think one that will pay off in the long run. I should give it a 7... but it gets a 9 to counter balance the folks who are just plain wrong. I finished the series in 3 sittings... liked it a lot.

Good show to pass the time
miljkovicmarin13 May 2022
Well, I binged it in a day. Kept me engaged.

Not everything is great. The final episode reveal was unexpected.

The show has nice foreshadowing and if you're paying attention you can see it. There are some things that happened for sake of plot but hey that's ok.

All in all not the best to have ever been made but decent. Looking forward to season 2.

Pretty good

The Lincoln Lawyer

Netflix has adapted a novel called The Brass Verdict into a television show. It stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Becki Newton from How I Met Your Mother, Neve Campbell from the Scream franchise, Christopher Gorham, Angus Sampson from the Insidious franchise, Jazz Raycole, and Lana Parrilla from Once Upon a Time.

In 2006, Michael Connelly published his first novel out of six books, based on Mickey Haller. 2011, sees Connelly's first book The Lincoln Lawyer get adapted into a movie. Years later, in 2022, Netflix released a television show, called The Lincoln Lawyer. This is based on the second book in the series, known as The Brass Verdict.

After another lawyer mysteriously dies, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia Rulfo) inherits all of his unfinished cases. On top of needing to learn his cases, he starts to investigate the sudden death of his colleague, while trying to repair his relationships in his personal life.

It's not hard to see why The Lincoln Lawyer is so popular on Netflix. All the storylines, and likable characters make the show intriguing to watch.

Rulfo is charming and personable as Haller. He makes the audience as well as the court laugh with his one liners. Previously having substance abuse issues, he has compassion for other people in similar situations, which is what leads him to hire Izzy Letts (Jazz Raycole) to be his driver. She is a great supporting character. They care and hold each other accountable to insure they both stay on the right path. Gorham does a good job portraying Trevor Elliott, a billionaire who plays the victim in his wife's murder. Newton plays a positive and caring Lorna Crane, she is Haller's secretary as well as friend. In addition, to all the people assisting Haller, he hires a private investigator named Cisco. Sampson works well together with the team in order to insure Haller's success.

The multiple storylines creates interest in the show. Most episodes there is a smaller case that Haller must win, but there also is a big case he has to solve along with other plot points. My verdict for The Lincoln Lawyer is if you like legal dramas, you will like this show.

Stick to the integrity of the books, please
StoryLover106 August 2023
I should have enjoyed this second season of The Lincoln Lawyer more than I did. It's Michael Connelly, after all. It's my kind of story and genre. Casting a native of Mexico as Mickey was refreshing, and, of course, authentic to Connelly's character. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo's portrayal demonstrated talent and offered the audience an enjoyable performance, especially in the first season, which weaved in aspects from Connelly's novel, The Brass Verdict in the adaptation. Christopher Gorham's Trevor Elliot was faultless.

Season two was plagued with several awkward moments/scenes and diluted performances. This was not exclusive to Garcia Rulfo. The romantic interludes, for instance, were superfluous, clumsy, and again, the acting appeared to be the culprit. But so many quality actors (including Neve Campbell, BTW) not performing well, forced me to admit that it was the writing (sorry Mr. Connelly et al.), and possibly some flaws in direction, both the story's outline as well as the actual scripted lines. When Campbell's character left for San Diego the morning after their latest tryst, Mickey's character is supposed to be clueless and forlorn. The scene was forced. Then the story cuts to happy go lucky Mickey in the classic Lincoln ragtop (top down, of course) taking in LA's streets with gaiety. Also incongruous was a lovely shot of snowcapped mountains. Unfortunately, it was supposed to be summertime in LA. One performer, Yaya DaCosta, whom I usually respect and enjoy, grossly over played the character. Perhaps this was in the production and direction, but I found her courtroom melodrama distracting.

Highlights: Becky Newton, Jazz Roycole, Elliot Gould, and Angus Sampson supported the production reliably with truly enjoyable performances. It's always a joy to see Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine in any production. I'd enjoy more of him in this surrogate Bosch role. True to Connelly's books, greater Los Angeles as its own character provides continuity that is more than just a backdrop or setting. And Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is a good casting choice as Mickey. I hope season three (should there be one) gives him better material. The series need not be direct adaptations of Connelly books (nor should it be). But drawing from their style, tenor, and integrity would serve the series well.

I demand the release date for second season, ASAP!
ReelShahid16 May 2022
This one is good and I honestly believe that this show has the potential to turn out to be the best one in this genre if they work on building up of characters of the supporting cast and a little more intensity in the plot.

Something like family in real danger, evolution of supporting cast, a haunting past and little more paper work and a space for court room drama in each episode.

Overall a winner!

Who in the world writes this crap?
adrews22 May 2022
This show is a glitzed-up soap opera thinly disguised as a legal drama pretending to lean on character development to hook our interest. But why do I hate these characters as soon as I meet them? Is it because the the main character, "Mickey," has labeled his two former wives "First Wife" and "Second Wife" in his cell phone? Or because "Second Wife" walks around in leopard print leggings, turquoise, and too much makeup while obnoxiously treating 40-year-old-looking Mickey like a 15-year-old boy who is just learning to hold his first job? Maybe it's because everyone in the show - the detective investigating the murder that kicks off the series, the judge who assigns Mick his cases, the husband of a victim of grand theft who is indignant that a judge delays his testimony by 18 hours - I mean every vapid character presents themselves with an air of repulsive self-importance. Yes, it is all those reasons... and more! The dialog is nauseating. Do people in L. A. talk to each other like this now? Are there any writers left who know how to write lines for characters who DON'T sound like they're mugging for an audience? (The word I'm getting at here is "authentic.") Are there actors who know how to act like normal people who do not walk or drive down the street with a soundtrack accompanying their movements? Maybe I need to look back 20 years to find such talent.

I am sure the story as told in Connelly's book was interesting. It's a shame the creators of this show drowned the elements of interest in the absurdity and idiocy of the characters they have assaulted us with. Two stars instead of one because the production quality is good and it's always nice to see Neve Campbell.

Enjoyable watch
neilgeorgeadams16 May 2022
Very watchable The Storyline is perhaps a little predictable but none the poorer for this. A few twists and turns as is typical of the genre. I like the portrayal of the family and work dynamics.

For those that saw the movie, the TV series may seem somewhat lighter in delivery, however, it remains engaging ... well worth watching.

Loved it because it was Family Friendly and had me guessing.
bigdogtim7-418-69404426 July 2022
This show, along with most based on a book are worth the watch and are typically written intellectually.

My Wife & I loved it and recommend this series to everyone based on the entertainment and the twist in this Lawyer, Crime Drama.

There are a lot of bad reviews written by younger people who are used to the garbage most shows put in them to attract their age group, but it's not here and I'm referring to the Sex Scenes, which simply do not need to be on televised shows that children can watch by themselves in their bedrooms.

I liked the idea of the Back Surgery from his accident that kept him from practicing law for several years and I get that part, because I've been there. Others in the negative reviews find that unbelievable, but to me, that is really what happens in real life.

There is so much to root for in this show, with a twisted ending that I doubt any of the naysayers saw coming, as I certainly didn't see it coming until it did.

I hate Wokeness in TV just like the next person, but to be critical of this show because the lead role is by a Latino/American is literally over the top, especially considering this is LA we are talking about.

All in All, great Family entertainment possibly toned down from the books I haven't read and definitely better than the trashy Lincoln Lawyer movie that I watched following this series, which portrayed the Defense Attorney as garbage, instead of how this show teaches us that "Everyone is presumed Innocent until Proven Guilty" and shows that being a Defense Attorney can be a Noble Profession after all.

Sorry for those who Hated it, but I'm guessing there from a younger generation.

A Pleasant Surprise...
emortland14 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I'm four episodes in, I thought the original with Mr McConaughey was pretty decent, and lo and behold, so is this. Never heard of Mr Garcia-Ruflo, but this whole series so far feels new & fresh with touches of familiarity from the original. Seriously, can you expect more from a reboot? I'll update this when I finish this first season. Pretty sure they'll do another one. Worth the Netflix subscription when they're doing stuff like this.

****UPDATE****

It's worth watching the whole series, although I have to admit the twists were a tiny bit predictable. Umm, there aren't that many characters to choose from. The very last scene appears to be our intro to season two, okiedokie, I'll look forward to it. Incidentally, it would be cool if they could work Louis Gosset Jr into a role with his doppelgänger. Just saying. Mss Campbell & Newton are great, and so is Mr Sampson.

A worthy successor to bull
MiloSuperSpesh18 July 2023
It has the same kind of humour, sassy characters, good strong leads and well produced, directed well, good pacing and other than the obvious differences lawyer vs jury consultant, and the rather shamefull product placement of lincoln cars, and cisco's husky voice might get annoying cos it seems forced this is a much watch for fans of legal drama's.

The plot each season so far (as of s2) seems to be one large case with interconnected stories and events and mickey's family legacy.

With out spoiling the finales and the main cases, there are clues sprinkled around most episodes, some are well hidden others blink and you'll miss them, untill it's explained you might have an idea or feel a bit dumb for not seeing it all !

Season 2 goes for a more obvious approach but gets a little bogged down with petty back and forth in court with evidence being withheld untill that side needs a 'win'.

Small nit pick The car scenes might require some suspension of disbelief with how staged they are, for example the rotating blurred back drop repeating and having perfect never changing lighting and perfect audio even with the ' windows' down. ( but this is a very common thing in tv shows).

Don't really understand the low scores other than some people are trying way to hard to be edgy or are from rival productions or trolls with nothing better to do.

Bottom line - is it the best show ever ? No but it's Pretty close imo and the flaws are minimal.

Just Not Up to the Novels
jpyle-813-68287510 August 2023
Let's take a popular series and make key changes and then wonder why the series isn't as popular as it should be.

There are several changes from the Lincoln Lawyer novels. Some of the stories from the books are redone. The plot of the first novel is just a minor subplot in the series.

Other changes are to character's, such as gender and sexual orientation. Yes, there is a token LGBTQ+ character among the regulars. I don't mind but now it seems every series requires one or more such characters, whether it adds anything to the story or not.

All this being said, the major weakness of this series is the portrayal of the title character, Mickey Haller. Mickey comes off as weak and passive. He's simply uninspiring. The lead actor needs to step things up and show some charisma. He is uninteresting.

Absolutely Stimulating!
MickyG33314 May 2022
I enjoyed the movie, but I think I like the show better. You take a decent film like that, and to make an adaptation that surpasses it overall, that's a colossal undertaking. There is no doubt they spent a good fortune on this series. The backdrop, dialogue, the story - all top notch. Don't expect this to be just like the movie, because it's not meant to be, and don't compare this to the novels (apples to oranges).

I haven't seen the Lead actor (Garcia-Rulfo) actually play lead in anything that I can recall, although he has showed up in some extraordinary films over the past decade. He captures this role exceedingly well, and I believe we are witnessing a long overdue opportunity for him. Surprisingly, he embodies the hero lawyer essence that is required for this role (as well as McConaughey did). I believe the success of the series hinges on this factor alone. Neve Campbell is great as always. She can't not act. The rest of the supporting cast are satisfactory, IMO. At least, they don't necessarily detract from the experience.

It's been years since we had a spectacular law series like The Practice (David E. Kelley), Boston Legal (David E. Kelley), Ally McBeal (David E. Kelley), The Good Wife (not Kelley), now The Lincoln Lawyer (David E. Kelley). If this proves to stand the test of time like all of his previous courtroom dramas, it will transcend everything currently on the air (for this genre, of course). Within the first 30 minutes I got the same thrills I recall so many years ago. Back in the day, we could only watch one episode per week as they were released, but now in the age of binge watching, I get to absorb this all in a weekend. I spent a good portion of my life with all of David E. Kelley's creations/productions, and I don't regret a moment of my misspent youth. The only question I have is, why did they wait so long to birth another great one?

Do we have whiffs of **** the police, here? Of course, but that's part of mainstream these days, and whether we like it or not, the organism that is the entertainment industry is married to this "culture". Accept it, and move on, otherwise you deny yourself some of the indulgences you deserve, such as The Lincoln Lawyer.

Entertainment value: 9. Acting: 6. Writing: 7. Cinematography: 8. Average: 7.5.

I was okay binging this
LauraAnnG21 May 2022
I have not seen the movie or read the books.

I binged all the eps before writing this.

It was an okay way to spend a bad weather day. I admit about half way through I fell asleep a few times. And more than once I had to go back and review because I found myself lost.

The actors/characters seem compelling enough. The lead actor was good but it seemed to me his accent changed a few times. Maybe that was just me. I was able to follow the main plot well enough but I think there was at least one maybe two secondary plots that just lost me. One was maybe about human trafficking. That was weird and I can't explain it.

As far as the main plot it did keep me guessing and there's a plot twist that was a surprise.

I'd watch a second season if they make it.

Season 1 was great; Season 2, not so much
jannmi24 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I have neither read the books nor seen the Matthew McConaughey movie, so I'm not rating against either of those. I really enjoyed Season 1, and I watched Season 2 until the end, but I didn't enjoy it as much. I never liked the character of Lisa--even if I was glad to see her called out in the end--and I found the mother to be very annoying. I also had a hard time with all the sex scenes in Season 2. First he sleeps with Lisa--in uncontrolled passion, which I found hard to believe. Then he shows the same passion for Wife Number 1, who then leaves him. And then he wants Lisa again. In fact, he's fantasizing about Lisa just before he sleeps with his ex-wife. I found all this very hard to believe. They left the viewer hanging at the end of Season 2, so I'm sure there will be a Season 3, and I'll probably watch it. At least Lisa won't be there anymore. I thought the main character was fine, and Wife Number Two, Izzy, and Cisco were also good. If I were just reviewing Season 1, I would have probably given it 9 or 10 stars, but Season 2 wasn't nearly as good.

Great Show!
cjdippaonly17 September 2022
Wow! It's been a while since I've watched a great legal drama. What a concept and executed so perfectly! The plot grips you right from the first episode and it keeps you on the edge in every episode, right until the end.

Now, I haven't read Michael Connelly's novels or watched the movie with Matthew McConaughey, so I realize I may not have the same perspective. But, I must say, every character is so well-defined with his/her own story, inner conflict and purpose. The acting was really good and the courtroom scenes so enthralling!

The cinematography was wonderful, the writing was excellent, and still a lot of unanswered questions. I really hope there is a season 2! (I mean, there has to be, right? After how it ended?!)

Great...if you like network formula tv shows
coco1234517 May 2022
I was really looking forward to this but it feels like any of 100 predictable network tv shows. Yawn.

There's the ruggedly handsome, sulky, brilliant lead.

There's the quirky, comical associate.

There's the smart-aleky teen.

There's the love/hate relationship with the ex.

There's the professional beyond-reproach judge.

There's the smarmy DA who dated the ex.

There's the hard-nosed cop.

What next, the tattooed, pigtailed tech genius?

why
I love Michael Connelly books. I am surprised he has allowed his name to be involved with this program. David Kelly is also over extending himself. This is a "B" version of a program. Wrong lead for this as you keep thinking about The original.

Amazing thriller
jasmeenkaurnagpal26 August 2022
The story is about a lawyer Mickey Haller, who has been out of practice for an year and is trying to cope up with the fears from his past. One day unexpectedly he gets the opportunity to work on all the open cases of a lawyer, who happens to be a victim of a stone cold murder. Juggling with all the cases and trails Mickey had an eye on a high profile murder case which could help him revive his reputation. The story is intriguing and captivating, it'll always keep you on the nerve. This is not like other thrillers where the climax may be predictable, you will be experiencing a lot of twists and as the story unravels you are going to find yourself hooked up with the characters. Best thing about watching this show in 2022 is you know for sure next season is coming!
