A surprisingly smart take on a tough topic
cherold3 March 2021
Zoey has been a pretty mindless, escapist show, so it's weird how seriously it's gone and taken racism. It's not just that it's grabbed a hot topic - the world is full of "very special episodes" - but that it put real thought into this episode.

I was really impressed by Zoey's disastrous attempt to get a conversation going, which turned into a series of white people explain how not racist they are. It was smart because it very nicely portrays the complexity of the dynamics, in which even sincere attempt to help can be tone deaf.

This episode made some people really mad, and it seems to be in part because of that scene. I don't believe, as naysayers would have it, that the episode is saying white people can do nothing to help. It's saying white people need to listen and learn and absorb information rather then just run all gung-ho to whatever solution they feel in their ignorance is a good one.

I will say that while I any review that goes on about the evils of wokeness is dumb, people who say they just want an escapist show and didn't sign up for this have a point. No one signed up for consciousness raising from Zoey. But that's part of why it's so powerful; it's pushing the message on people who are burying their heads in the sand. So I say, bravo!

Don't be scared to watch this, though. Outside of addressing racism, this is pretty much a typical episode of Zoey. Fun musical numbers and general fluffiness. This show hasn't suddenly turned into Dear White People.

But I am curious to see if, as the writers claim, they are going to stick with this topic and not let it die as a "very special episode." Very curious to see what comes next.

Powerful. Honest. Truthful.

This episode was fantastic and maybe the best one the show has done yet. John Clarence Stewart (Simon) was phenomenal in every sense, and Alex Newell (Mo) and Kapil Talwalkar (Tobin) also shone. The conversations around systemic racism and Simon's experience as a Black man were so real and raw. Beautiful musical performances. This episode deserves an Emmy.

A GREAT SHOW GETS REAL & STOPS PANDERING TO THE WILLFULLY, BLISSFULLY UNAWARE
allipbay13 February 2021
This was one of my favorite episodes of Zoey, so far. It was handled well and when Simon shared his experience with Zoey, I was brought to tears. I really liked how they didn't make Zoey come off as perfect, either, despite her being the protagonist. It was more of a realistic portrayal.

The negative comments about the episode are unsurprising. They are a demonstration of white fragility at its finest and ironically illustrate why racism is still being talked about and still continues to need to be talked about.

So many needed lessons in an amazing episode
mbaker-6923114 February 2021
This episode reflects real life for so many people. There were so many lessons in this episode for Zoey that many of my white friends and I have learned this past year about the Black experience. It's not perfect but it's still amazing to see! Virtue signaling and other problematic actions people do were even addressed.

Also as someone who is HR trained committed to diversity and inclusion.

Dealing with a real issue in tech
thedudebryant15 February 2021
This show has always dealt with bias issues in tech (women) but suddenly they bring up race and folks are so upset. If bringing up a real problem in tech is so upsetting crawl back under your rock.

Poor writing
Arkenz16 December 2021
Dealing with racial equality is fine but my issue is with how they write Simon and Mo to treat Zoey in such a disrespectful and unfriendly manner. Their "Us against everyone else" attitude and making Zoey feel less of herself because of it was upsetting to see. She's been using her heart-songs to help characters all throughout and Simon and Mo just ghost Zoey. Ergh..

Best episode of the season!!!
Tahnie114 February 2021
I really appreciate the way this episode addresses racism and addresses the tough conversations. I think after the year 2020, we should expect to see more earnest discussions to bring us together. How can anyone honestly be against creating understanding and growth away from racism? To deny it, is only asking to keep things the same. The world needs change. This episode was beautiful and emotional. The songs were amazing! I love this show so much! Always hits the feels!

NBC ruined it AGAIN!!!
liwaiman27 February 2021
Zoey's season 1 was a great show, I really liked it, the songs were great too, but god knows what's going on with season 2, it has been really awful and awkward, but I can still watched it as a fan, but EP 6 was a total BS, it was painful to watch, added racial topic was never a good idea on TV shows, specially with the poor and terrible story telling skills, makes me really uncomfortable to watch.

Last but not least, most people just want a fun show to relax and laugh, escape form the real world, not recommend to watch if you just wanna relax after work!

About speaking truth to white people
TheBronzeAge24 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So I'll try to review again, since my first post did "not meet contribution guidelines". It went like this:

This is the best episode of the series so far. In life I would not have expected that this entertainment format would manage to depict the topic of (here a bit I felt I had to censor since it was a CN to white people...) racism, here specifically in the workplace, so profoundly and close to reality. Using the example of the well-meaning, but unfortunately (censored again) ignorant Zoey, it is shown here how unconcerned white people are with the issue of racism. Zoey realizes only very slowly and with a lot of help from her Black friends that the issue does not pass her by and that she plays a clear role in it. She is not at all aware of her responsibility within the system or that it is this lack of awareness and ignorance that leads to the reproduction of discriminatory systems and structures (that she benefits from).

And Simon. Simon, Simon. What a wonderful performance by John Clarence Stewart. Everything he said to Zoey is spot on! (censored again) "I have to constantly amputate parts of who I am...", now that is the truth. I believe the episode was written by Zora Bikangaga. Big thanks to him for this really valuable story. So close to the pain. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It freaks me out how real is this series content.
soyale_9218 September 2021
I'm a white woman living in white man wordl, in a country with multiple racial issues, when it comes to Indígenas communities, or people with brownish skin. And it sucks, it really sucks. And we need to talk about this serious themes and we know it, but most of the time we can't see the clear path to do it. With a simple, non-subtle way, this episode lead us, leads everybody to start talking about it and how to listen to them and how to be really supportive. A call for Empathy.

No just no

I come to watch TV sitcoms to get away from political agendas being shoved in my face, I've loved how light and happy ZEP has been and I hate that I feel like they're drowning me in stuff I already see on the news. Also...Simon is the SPOKESPERSON of sparkpoint....why would he think anyone else would be asked to do that conference besides him?....

What happened?? Or how to ruin a great show!!
m-baloncesto13 February 2021
I loved season 1, it was fresh, original and well balanced. It was one of the greatest shows of last year. And the final episode was just... Wow!

And then season 2 came and they ruined everything. It seems like they don't know where they're going. Even Jane Levy, always worthy of awards, and the rest of the cast can't save this disaster.

I honestly hope the next episodes do a better job.

Just when I thought last week's episode was bad, this is worse. Mo was so fake. Preaching all that racial nonsense but so quick to take Danny Michael Davis's money to start her own business.

A GREAT SHOW PANDERS TO THE PC CULT
kryptosmaster11 February 2021
ZOEY is (was) a refreshing, unique show...UNTIL THIS EPISODE! As soon as it went "white guilt", racism, etc; I felt ready to turn it off. While I'm sure there have been some touches of this in past episodes; this was just an all-out PC love-fest and it disappointed me to see it in yet another show that I used to enjoy. Can't say I'm too surprised, though. The whole entertainment world is caught up in this BS. While I haven't yet pulled the plug on ZOEY; it's definitely on the chopping block if this is what's to come in future episodes. For the record: this is NOT what Martin Luther King fought for. It's the EXACT OPPOSITE!

They couldve do this like 10/10 but theyre ruined it
sonermoner-7656815 February 2021
This episodes subject is awesome. It could be so great for the black lives matter movement but when you did the black persons objective, you cant bully the white people who wants to help your cause. Its doesnt put you somewhere else really much different from the rest cause this is racism too. Anyway #Blacklivesmatter but this script is terrible.
