Better than the last episode but still needs to improve
landonvb7 February 2021
I do appreciate the energy Dan Levy has, and I did chuckle at least once in every skit. But it still has weaker moments here and there where I feel like I am supposed to laugh but it just doesn't come through me.

Had potential
caleblb-851678 February 2021
Dan Levy was phenomenal, his energy was great. The Eugene Levy cameo was a fun surprise.

Cold Open: It was okay, the commercial parodies and Aidy as both coaches saved it.

The monologue: It was pretty good, but it seems like they do a studio tour at least once every couple months and it's getting old now but Aidy as the covid police and Eugene Levy's cameo saved it.

The Sketches: Universal Tram was funny, Levy's jokes and energy were funny and present. Kenan's reactions were, like always, perfect

Super Bowl Pod was not great, it had potential but didn't get quite there. Kate as Fauci and Bowen as Psy really saved it and was one of the best moments of the night

Lifting Our Voices was funny but not memorable at all. Levy's over-the-top activist and Aidy's well-intentioned math teacher were great and made the sketch watchable.

Hot Damn was not funny, long and recycled. This format of 2 people singing a song that nobody has ever heard, but then they remember. They did it in the 2015 Chris Hemsworth episode and possibly more. The format is just not funny

Wedding Friends had the most potential of any sketch but it didn't get there. It had funny moments, like when Dan and Kate's characters are texting each other with the volume up, but besides that it was not funny.

Prerecorded Sketches: The Zillow sketch was the best of the night, it's so true and I bet hundreds of 20-40 yr olds felt attacked. The It Gets Better sketch was pretty good and Kate's iguana was the best part. Fun Fact: All cast members featured in the sketch are LGBTQ+.

Weekend Update: It was probably the most funny segment the entire night, from Jost and Che's comments on Marjorie Taylor Greene's Conspiracy Theories, Calling Trump a "Social Media Influencer", Jeff Bezos' Retirement. The guests were all funny, Heidi and Mikey's child cancellers were good and Kenan and Chris' Twinsthenewtrend were hilariously reacting to the Friends Theme Song, Baby Shark, and The Alphabet.

Musical Guest: Phoebe Bridgers type of music is not really my thing, but it wasn't too bad, but if she's gonna smash a guitar, she's gonna need to work out a bit more.

Overall: Good episode, very funny moments and lines but overall most sketches were lacking, they had potential but didn't quite get there, whether that's just not great writing, or because covid messed up the time for rewrites, I don't know. But the sketches are just not quite funny enough to be good.

Best/Worst Sketches: Best is the Zillow Sketch Worst is Lifting Our Voices

Extra Opinion: Obviously Lorne and the writers are over politics, but they need to do one big send off for Trump, get Alec back and do a post-presidency sketch and retire him.

The things I do for Phoebe Bridgers
rishikulkarni-660448 February 2021
Post-Trump SNL is (a little) better. Still very few laughs but at least there are jokes instead of Trump-bad, Berniebro-bad, Kamala girl-boss. Nickelodeon ad was cool but the cold-open had only 1 or 2 decent jokes which sucks because its super easy to make good superbowl jokes. Soup or Bowl? uh I need both <--- see, epic joke.

Dan Levy didn't really make many jokes during his monologue but it was cool to see Eugene Levy, I guess.

  • the COVID beans sketch was actually pretty funny? Probably because Kyle Mooney and Beck were involved. Allies bit was okay too I guess. Kyle Mooney is always the best part of every episode, please make him head writer. All the other sketches in the first half were pretty lame though.
  • Kenan is so good; even in garbage sketches. Why is he still on SNL? Did Lorne Michael witness him committing vehicular manslaughter and now he can't leave?
  • SNL should have ended after Dear Sister. They will never top or even come close to topping that sketch.
  • PHOEBEEE. KYOTOO. Woo. She killed it. I lied. Dear Sister wasn't SNL's peak, this is. The End is Here.
  • Weekend Update is usually really awful but goddammit there were like 2 kinda great jokes and a few good ones this time. Still mostly mid. I could beat Colin Jost in a fight.
  • Domino's ad in between sketches was pretty funny.
  • Second half sketches are unbearable. I want Phoebe back.
  • I KNOW THE END LIVE BABYYYYY!! LETS GOOOO! Skeleton Necklace??? violin was out of tune. Oh My God. The scream. The guitar. Art.

In conclusion, watch I think you should leave on Netflix. The worst sketch is better than the best SNL sketch this season.

Was it worth it to watch the episode just to see Phoebe try and fail smashing her guitar? Maybe. Was it worth it just to see libs freak out on twitter about her performance? 100%

FINALLY!!! An episode of SNL where I laughed at nearly every skit!!!
jphoward-717287 February 2021
Okay, so we all know that this season of SNL has been pretty mediocre and kind of lame, possibly due to the crew not having much rehearsal time because of COVID restrictions and not much time for rewrites to make the skits funnier, but seems like they finally had time because nearly every skit got a laugh out of me tonight.

The writers seemed to step up their game and make the skits funny and I think they did a good job. Some skits were downright funny, I actually laughed, and it feel like it's been a while since I laughed at an SNL episode. So props to the writers.

Dan Levy was great tonight too. Tbh, I haven't watch much of Schitt's Creek, but I'm guessing the energy he put in this episode is the same amount he put into the show and he was hilarious. He wasn't shy, he didn't stagger, and he just acted with great gusto. Also (SPOILER ALERT!!!), nice that his dad Eugene appeared as well. I had a feeling he would, tbh.

Weekend Update...well...it's Colin Jost and Michael Che, people. They're always funny and know how to make the audience laugh and they did so once again tonight. The characters they had on (played by Mikey, Heidi, Kenan, and Chris) were pretty funny too and I got a laugh from them, though not nearly as much as I did from Colin and Michael.

As for Phoebe Bridgers, her first performance was good, but her second one...eh...it was rather over-the-top and a little disturbing. The rock music growing louder towards the end with her screaming at the top of her lungs then smashing her guitar (well, attempting to, anyway) on the speakers several times just made it a very weird performance. I know some musicians do that and some people love it when they do, but to me, it just seemed unnecessary and over-the-top, like I said. So if you're not really into that type of music, prepare yourselves. If you do like it, then I'm sure you'll love it.

Anyways, overall, if you want to laugh at an SNL episode, I would choose this one and I guarantee you'll be satisfied.

someone has to call it
emperorsclothes7 February 2021
Let's call it what it is: Dan Levy is not funny. The emperor has no clothes.

He is a hack writer and an unfunny performer. The closest he gets to being funny is humorous; gross. Yech.

Unfunny people who have weight behind them infect the writing and performing of others... that's why the show last night stunk.

It reminds me of Colin Hanks when he started out and they gave him so many chances and he suuuuuuuuuuuuucked. Then he suffered because of it and had to dig deep and then became a pretty great actor (he was awesome in Dexter), and now he is almost really funny.

I may be wrong, but I can pretty much guarantee Dan Levy will never host SNL again. Lorne was probably smiling and saying all the nice things while shoving him out the door. Funny is funny and Dan is not. And, all the power to the people that want to watch Schatt's Crak, but when I am forced to watch him on a show I have loved for over 3 decades, then I get annoyed.

Oh, and I saw someone write about Dan's range!? He has no range. He just got over imitating his father a few years ago and he just got over mumbling his dialogue as well. I say no. Sorry. I wanted to like him. I wanted to be wrong, but sadly he stinks.

Oh and we couldn't see his damn eyes in the opening monologue because the shadow from his glasses

So much better than the previous week!
reemsrouji9 February 2021
Was it the same writers for this episode and the episode before because there is a huge difference. Dan Levy was a natural. It didn't have any of the awkward quiet moments of the week before.

The First Skit Wasn't Funny!
c-keenan20018 February 2021
Dan Levy = Funny. Eugene Levy= Funny. The opening skit? Not so much. IDK? The entire opening skit just left me feeling cold. Eugene Levy being trapped inside a tight plexiglass isolation box while Dan Levy was giving a tour of the back stage area was funny. All of Dan's skits were funny. I don't know who the sound editor was but he/she needs to be fired. Phoebe Bridgers sound editing needed some work. Her backup musician's instruments were too loud and her microphone wasn't loud enough. The instruments just overwhelmed Phoebe's voice.

Hot Damn bar skit was so amateurish that Broadway has now permanently closed down
Ed-Shullivan7 February 2021
Another god awful episode. Worse of the worse. I was disgusted with the amateurish performances of guest host Dan Levy, and SNL cast member Cecily Strong BOTH dressed in Hot Pants who were subsequently joined by other SNL cast members to pretend to sing a Broadway tune title "Hot Damn". Even the most left wing liberal Broadway performers must have been really embarrassed to have BROADWAY even mentioned in the same breath of their title skit Hot Damn. Sing if you can sing. Dance if you can dance. Otherwise get off the SNL stage.

Hot Damn? Hell no!

The writers REALLY NEED TO BE REPLACED!!!!

Pleeeeeeeeeease get some creative writers with some funny skits. It's been years since I laughed.

To ensure that SNL is literally dead in the water the musical guest Phoebe Bridgers (does she actually play guitar?) and her band appeared for their two songs dressed in full skeleton (bones) costumes. When Phoebe takes her guitar and smashes it repeatedly on stage it symbolizes SNL being dismantled for good. I rest my case. Done like dinner.

I give this episode a 1 out of 10 rating.

January 16th 1993
QuackQuack7 February 2021
On the same night this new episode aired, they showed a classic from 1/16/93. The classic one was twenty times funnier. This new episode was horrible. Why can't the producers look back and see what was funny compared to this garbage they've been producing the past 15 years? The weekend update guys laughing at their OWN unfunny jokes. Unfunny skits, and guest hosts and musical guests who I've NEVER even heard their names before this episode aired. Who are these people? I guess even real stars won't come near this show these days.

Wow!
jcgirgenti7 February 2021
That was terrible! Where are the jokes? The impersonations that actually look and act like the person they're portraying? This may be the worst episode I've ever seen. No talent millennials have ruined this show.. no heart or fight in them. Lorne, fire sale now!!!

Just not very good.
iboso647 February 2021
A solid cold opening, a blink and you'll miss it cameo from Eugene Levy, parts of the Universal Tram ride, and Weekend Update (especially with the YouTubers) are all the laughs you'll get out of this otherwise dreary and lifeless episode. I can understand if you've done eight weeks in a row, that it might be hard to come up with fresh material, but they had three or four weeks off, leading to this. Just bad.
