history and jewels
dromasca19 June 2009
This very interesting documentary covers a beautiful episode in the history of the art of jewelery on the background of the last decades of the Russian Czars empire. Carl Faberge manufactured in his workshops around 50 eggs for the Russian Czar, each a beautiful piece of art, each ornamented in a different manner and with themes reflecting the main events of the time and the life of the imperial family of Russia. 44 of the eggs survived, but they are spread all over the world, and there is very little chance that they will ever be reunited in an exhibition, so such a documentary is the best we can get to see together these masterpieces. The documentary is well filmed, no fancy cinematographic tricks but all efforts focused on rendering the astonishing details of the jewels. Information-wise the film does not bring us too much, but the pieces of art speak for themselves and for this main reason the film is worth seeing.
