A good film(if your expectation is low)
I think some people are rating highly than the film is !some people are getting too harsh !! I would rate this film 6/6.5 ...For me ,Abir's performance was the poorest .Nusrat acted good but dialogue throwing is not that good ..maybe she should work more on his voice ..she can do better I believe ...I loved most Mosharrof Karim .. His part of story was too good ....If that part was bigger ,I would rate this film at least 8 !! But I think it had potential ,but not worked on that with the most hardwork !! But you can watch one time with less expectation.

Verbal Charisma Unleashed: 'Dictionary' Speaks Volumes with Brilliance
TravelGreenTV20 January 2024
In the world of cinema, where storytelling is often dominated by grandeur and visual spectacle, 'Dictionary' stands out as a gem that relies on the power of words to weave a compelling narrative. Director Bratya Basu, along with the brilliant mind of writer Buddhadeb Guha, brings to life a tale that transcends linguistic barriers and captures the essence of human connections.

The plot revolves around Makar Kanti Chatterjee, portrayed with exceptional finesse by the legendary actor Mosharraf Karim. Karim's portrayal of the semi-educated self-made businessman is nothing short of a masterclass in acting. His ability to convey the struggles of a character navigating the complexities of English communication adds depth and authenticity to the film. Karim's performance is a testament to his versatility and the nuanced approach he brings to every role.

Bratya Basu's direction shines as he skillfully intertwines the lives of Makar Kanti Chatterjee and Ashoke Sanyal, played by an equally impressive Suman. The seamless connection between these two distinct yet interconnected stories is a testament to Basu's directorial prowess. The pacing of the film is well-crafted, allowing the audience to absorb the intricacies of the characters' lives while maintaining a sense of intrigue.

Buddhadeb Guha's writing elevates 'Dictionary' to a level of intellectual engagement rarely seen in contemporary cinema. The dialogues are not merely lines but carefully crafted pieces of art that reflect the characters' emotions and societal nuances. Guha's ability to infuse humor and depth into the narrative adds layers to the film, making it a memorable cinematic experience.

The film's brilliance lies in its ability to entertain and enlighten simultaneously. 'Dictionary' celebrates the beauty of language, highlighting the struggles individuals face when trying to communicate in a world dominated by linguistic challenges. The narrative unfolds like a carefully chosen set of words from a well-thumbed dictionary, each contributing to the overall richness of the story.

Finally, 'Dictionary' is a linguistic masterpiece that showcases the synergy between a stellar cast, visionary director, and a wordsmith of a writer. Mosharraf Karim's performance, coupled with Bratya Basu's direction and Buddhadeb Guha's writing, make this film a must-watch for those who appreciate the art of storytelling at its finest. 'Dictionary' leaves an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape, proving that sometimes words can be the most powerful tools in a filmmaker's arsenal.

Worst Movie By Bratya Basu
bikashroymobile27 June 2021
The chemistry between Boudi and Suman was not clear at all. It was without any starting or ending. Mosharrf Karim was good as usual. But, movie was not upto the mark.

Not even a one time watch
srutimisra23 May 2021
"Dictionary" is a Bengali language drama film which was released in 2021, directed by Bratya Basu. The movie is based on two short stories "Baba howa" and "Swami howa" written by Buddhadeb Guha. Mosharraf Karim, Abir and Nusrat are the protagonists. Mosharraf plays the role of a businessman who can't communicate in English. Abir is an introvert forest officer and Nusrat plays the role of his wife. She has an extra marital affair with Mosharraf's brother in law.

The trailer was very promising so I decided to give it a watch. First of all, Thanks to Nusrat. She took the half responsibility for spoiling the movie. The onscreen adaption is very bad. Script writing and dialogue delivery both are pathetic. Abir's performance is typical as usual. The only good thing is the performance of Mosharraf Karim. He's the reason, I spent my valuable time for. The climax is also very disappointing. Seems like it has a forceful ending.

According to me, "Dictionary" is not even a one time watch movie. Watch it at your own risk.

The Affair
Insane_Man26 August 2021
An unfaithful wife becomes jealous when his lover is going to marry a girl. Her husband is tolerant all the way even knowing her infidelity. On the other hand, a self made businessman is eager to know the meaning of an English word his banker considers him.

Spoiler ahead!!!!!!

Two parallel story. One is, Mosharraf Karim, a businessman, looking for a word meaning buying a dictionary. The English word his banker told him. His son argue with the banker for correct meaning. However, Mosharraf Karim is the best, even in foreign, he proved it.

The other one is, Abir Chatterjee, where he is a good-for-nothing husband of Nusrat Jahan. His wife is making love with another man, but knowing everything he has no feeling, no reaction, no backwash, not a single word. He is infirm all in all. His wife making sex with her lover and then when her lover got married, she comeback to her husband and then she makes sex with her husband. Her husband has no reaction, no huff, just doing sex and forget everything, forgetting this, that his wife once (may be several times) slept with another man, and he has nothing to say. One of the least self-respect and stupid man in the world. By the way, the unnatural lips of Nusrat Jahan worsen the movie experience.

The authority gives a message to the society that, even your wife does anything in your absence, even your wife sleeps with anyone, don't take step to get back her, just wait for her comeback and forget everything. Thus, promoting Adultery, Extramarital affair, Extramarital sex. How ridiculous!

Nothing will get apart from Abir
Dips310529 October 2021
Subject wise the movie was quite good. But with her school of acting Nusrat should be casted opposite Abir, she won't deserve a chance. Abir is class actor, he may not have muscle, he may not that dance skill, he may not have that skill to be a super-human in Bengali movie what we used to see till a few years ago, but in his generation, considerably, he is one of the most talented actor of bong industry, it will not be wrong if I say, he is one of best actor ever bengali industry have produced. So, Nusrat opposite him looks like a furniture. But, yeah the story is good which I liked the most in this movie.

This is stupid
sayemoid17 January 2022
One of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. Not talking about the filmmaking itself. Rather the story.

Don't know what kind of husband would tolerate his wife's extra-maritual affair. And then try to dignify it. A spineless one may be.

The plot of the story was not made properly!!!
nazrulislamsuri30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The plot of the story was not made properly.

Due to not showing the past of Suman, Suman's college senior Ashok Da and Ashok Da's wife Smita Boudi, and how they connected so well, couldn't understand that.

Abir delivered the dialogues naturally with fairly classy acting as always.

Nusrat's performance is inconsistent compared to Abir and Karna. Mosharraf Karim nailed it as usual. Those who are fans of Mosharraf Karim, they will not be disappointed at all.

But I found li'l difficult to adapt Paulmi Bose in the role of his wife.

And since I haven't read Buddhadeb Guha's those short stories, I can't say how appropriate the film is in that aspect. But in my opinion it is an average Bengali film.
