A flat film.
jp_9112 October 2022
"Ticket to Paradise" is the clear example that the trailer is better than the movie itself. The script does not bring anything new to romantic comedies, it rushes to take the already known formula and fill the plot with the typical clichés. Julia Roberts and George Clooney offer simple performances without much charm, the secondary characters are more endearing as is the case with Wren Butler played by Billie Lourd. The filming locations are extraordinary and the cinematography makes them look even more beautiful. Returning to the script, it fails to catch on and as entertainment it doesn't go that far either. One of the worst moments is the terrible CGI with which a dolphin that appears on the screen for a few seconds was created. Movie to see once and not repeat.

Early 00's romantic comedy essence!
cinema_is_life15 September 2022
If you are fed up with all these Netflix comedies lacking of humour having actually push yourself to crack a smile " Ticket to Padise " will definitely make things easier for you.

It was a relief to watch a rom com that had fast paced just to the point dialogues. The staring couple was great. Their long last friendship had them feel comfortable with each other so they had a great connection in front of the cameras. Roberts is one of tbe best actresses ever in a variety of genres but romantic comedies will always have her as their Queen!

So if you are looking for a ticket that gets you a couple of hours of joy and relaxation this movie is the answer. Enjoy!

A cookie cutter romcom
ethanbresnett21 September 2022
Ticket to Paradise is a completely bog standard romcom. Not a single creative risk was taken in the making of this film. It is all very safe and predictable.

They cast George Clooney and Julia Roberts and knew that that would be enough to get bums on seats, so they phoned in the rest.

The comedy is all tried and tested stuff. The plot follows the traditional romcom formula, meaning you won't find any surprises here.

This doesn't make it a bad film, its just got a pretty uninspired feel to it, as if it was made by a marketing team.

The result is a charming, sweet, but unremarkable film. If you've ever seen a romcom then you've seen Ticket to Paradise, but it does have its moments.

Nostalgia Watch
CcMeL8R18 September 2022
I love the actors, loved the location and loved an older romance getting a look in for a change. However, the plot was lazy and it kind of felt like an opportunity was missed, it was only okay when it could have been great. It felt like the actors just sleepwalked through the movie and the script wasted their talents.

Also, what stopped me from enjoying the movie more was the dumbness of the supposedly very intelligent daughter. I mean, what is the rush to marry someone you have known for only 30 days? Maybe she had been binge-watching 30 day fiancé. I get that he's a hunk and it's a paradise island but after a couple of years of picking seaweed even that will get old.

There was great chemistry between George and Julia and it kind of felt like we were cheated out of a proper smooch between them! It is worthwhile for the nostalgia factor but not a classic and probably not even a re-watch.

Formulaic romantic comedy done right
masonsaul20 September 2022
Ticket to Paradise follows a very familiar formula that has very few surprises in its narrative but that works as a nice reminder as to why this formula works so well when done right, especially in the hands of two perfectly matched screen legends.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts are both great, having worked together many times before their chemistry and comedic timing is instant and extremely strong. Kaitlyn Dever is really good with a warmth makes her sudden relationship feel genuine.

Ol Parker's direction is also really good, the location constantly looks gorgeous and it maintains a solid pace throughout. The music by Lorne Balfe works perfectly for the film's tone, so grand and swoon worthy.

Enjoyable Entertainment
tabuno22 October 2022
George Clooney and Julia Robert together again in this new rom-com. An entertaining and delightful movie with the predictable humor and dramatic bits, playful. The A-stars are cast as divorced parents who plot to stop the wedding of their daughter, attorney to be to a seaweed cultivator. A good way to briefly and necessarily escape all the realistic geo-economic-political intrigue of current events and be transported to a beautiful island beach with amazing sunsets. We deserve it. Both Clooney and Julia seem comfortable in their roles, bickering and playing off each other. The cultural setting and marriage ceremony stands out as refreshingly different.

Routine
blanche-210 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For a film not liked by critics, Ticket to Paradise, it turns out, was the very ticket to get older audiences back into theaters after COVID. $160 million isn't chicken feed.

The story is nothing unusual- a divorced couple (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) come together to keep their daughter (Kaitlyn Dever) from marrying a young man (Maxime Bouttier) who farms seaweed in Bali.

You know the rest of the plot.

Gorgeous scenery and nice work from the actors. I am not a fan of Julia Roberts but I am of George Clooney. They work very well together.

Given the age of Dever, I think the parents were probably supposed to be a good 10 years younger.

No mention was made of the 22 year difference between Lucas Bravo, who played Roberts' boyfriend, and Roberts - but it's about time. Actors have played men with love interests who could be their daughters for years.

tired
magnuslhad29 March 2023
You have to imagine Clooney and Roberts, two people who are good pals in real life, read this script and saw the chance to have a holiday in an exotic location with a buddy, all the while being paid for it. Even when they aren't really trying both are very charismatic, and they aren't really trying here, unfortunately. The film has a promising start, as the bickering between the divorcees is top-notch screwball comedy fare. But once we get to Bali and they unite forces, it all turns dull and formulaic. The young lovers never really seem real and so never appear genuinely under threat, and the attempts to introduce Balinese life and culture is saccharine sweet.

In short, meh.

A traditional story set in a stunning location and with star charisma.
sbweightman21 September 2022
If you're going to produce a run of the mill romantic comedy/drama film then you may as well set it in one of the most beautiful places on earth and get some of the biggest names in Hollywood to lead it.

  • - - - - - - - - -
The location and scenery was stunning, the acting performances were good and although the story itself was by the numbers, it was enjoyable light hearted entertainment with a light moral message.

  • - - - - - - - - -
It does run for a bit too long and the outtakes were by far the funniest part of the film.

Overall, I would score this film as a six out of ten.

A lazy and weak remake.
krzysiektom27 September 2022
This is a loose remake of a French comedy with Dany Boon. That one was much funnier, with a better script. This one is lazy and treats viewers like morons, because it assumes that nice locations like Bali and two likeable, easy on the eye movie stars like Clooney and Roberts will guarantee success, no matter how bad and lazy the script is. It really looks like another comedy made quickly for Netflix. I don't recommend spending money on this, better wait for the streaming or TV... unless you are depressed, unhappy, down on your luck in your private life and quickly need some positive, optimistic and light entertainment. 3/10 for normal viewers, 8/10 if you're depressed and sad.

Enjoyed every minute!
dogonlion15 December 2022
Oh don't listen to the negative reviews. This is a movie to just sit back and enjoy without overthinking. Can't people do just that anymore? You're spending almost 2 hours in a paradise with Julia Roberts and George Clooney, so the acting is guaranteed. The rest of the cast is awesome as well. So what if the story is predictable? Sometimes it's ok for our guess to be right when everything else is right. I laughed at the simple jokes and felt wonderful after watching this movie. This is the perfect movie if you want to take a break from trying to be the most intelligent person you know. I don't think the producers intended for it to be other than that.

Good movie poorly done
NS-movie-reviews29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could have been a solid watch but instead it is... Fine. It's cute, lighthearted, nostalgic fluff. But even fluff needs to make sense. "Ticket to Paradise" didn't exactly do that.

There were pros. Kaitlyn Devers is always a charm and Billie Lourd does a great job as a secondary character. The location was gorgeous and I appreciate the incorporation of the culture and customs of Bali. The beer pong scene was hands down the best. It was funny, human, and a great bonding moment. It was a bummer more of the movie wasn't like that.

The cons stem mostly from the lack of those types of scenes. It was too shallow and... Well, lacking. For parents that meddle to the point of stealing rings and trying to break up the marriage, they're never particularly concerned with how far away Bali is from Chicago. Or that Lily is getting married after knowing someone for 40 days. They just don't want her to repeat their mistake, but it's never really elaborated on. The film feels fickle and flimsy.

Additionally I found George Clooney's character insufferable for the first half. He was smug and too condescending and jaded. It felt so cliche. Julia Roberts maybe didn't act her part any less cliche than he did, but I didn't find her character so grating.

While leaving much to be desired, "Ticket to Paradise" is meant to be a sweet no-brainer sort of flick. It does entertain and it does have its touching moments amidst beautiful scenery and some good one liners.

Predictable and Dull
kylecurry17 December 2022
I wanted to like this movie because of the actors, but there is nothing to like. Just recycled scenes from similar romantic comedy movies. The shtick fails to entertain and unfortunately the slapstick gags come across as forced and desperate.

The clever banter (which takes the place of any real character development) between Clooney and Roberts gets old very fast. The main characters lack depth.

The sound editing makes it hard to hear the dialogue and some of the actors mumble their lines.

I give 3 stars for the beautiful setting. Was any of it authentic? I don't know. I hope they didn't offend the Balinese people with this movie.

Watch something else.

Strong Comedy and Weak Plot
mohd-4704616 September 2022
This movie was so fun and enjoyable to watch. I actually did not expect to laugh a lot, but I did.

The performance of George Clooney and Julia Roberts was superior, and their comedy in the movie was joyful.

The overall atmosphere of the movie -taking place in the island of Bali- was great with all the nice natural views.

What I did not like in the movie was the plot and some of its illogical events and changes. I believe that more effort should have been put in the plot to provide a better experience.

Also, the focus on the movie was mainly on George Clooney and Julia Roberts when I believe that other significant characters should have had more focus.

After all, if you are looking for a fun movie with good comedy to watch without caring much about the plot, consider watching this one.

Predictable, tired, with unlikeable main characters
neil-47629 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Lily and Wren holiday to Bali after finishing their degrees, and Lily falls in love with a Balinese seaweed fisherman. Parents David and Georgia on their way to the sudden wedding, resolve to do what they must to prevent Lily from throwing her life away like this, even though this means putting aside the acrimony in which they split after 5 years of marriage.

So: 1. Big names George Clooney and Julia Roberts: 2. Main plot: parents at war, witty dialogue, expectation of happy resolution: 3. Backstory to main plot to add depth/heart: 4. Subplot: assorted spanners thrown into daughter's relationship - will it survive them?

5. Subplot: mother's amorous relationship with glamorous toyboy: 6. Side characters: funny lady on plane, boyfriend's parents and sister: 7. Incidental incidents: dolphin swim, drunk dancing, losing boat: 8. Gorgeous scenery, bright colours

And that's the problem. This film is assembled by numbers. There's nothing wrong with it - Clooney and Roberts ooze star power, the scenery is indeed gorgeous, all the bits of the story fit together and operate smoothly, everything plays out as expected...

And it's all utterly soulless. It's a romcom put together by a committee. And, in assembling it, they lost sight of the fact that the two main characters are rather unlikeable. Oh, we learn the reason, and they recover some likeability by the end. But, by then, I didn't care to learn to like the newly likeable David and Georgia. And I was certain how it was going to play out all the way through. And it did.

What's it missing?
AfricanBro21 October 2022
Unashamedly predictable. It should get the right audience since it's a movie that's exactly what you expect. A story which has been told before, just in a new setting, but it's less about the story, more about the charm it gives. Comfort movie vibes. A little amusing I was the only one my age, audience was mostly middle aged women and a few slightly older than that men. Last that happened was when I saw The Good House which that made sense, but this is a movie for everyone, guess most were there for Black Adam which I admittedly saw first.

Immediately catch the drift as it starts with the ex-husband and wife narrating totally different views on the same events. A lot of snarky, witty remarks throughout, not entirely quotable, nor cringe. Reminiscent of the early 2000's comedies, refreshing to see now; it even had bloopers in post credits top it off. The last recent attempt at making this sorta movie was I Want You Back which didn't really deliver.

It was just funny, lighthearted and fun. Fun to see George Clooney and Julia robert's in a now rocky relationship, their disdain for each other's what made it work. It's actually not about the goofy stuff and more of the chemistry the characters had with each other which is why I think they should have given us more of Lily and Gede's relationship at the start because I was never really that invested yet their relationship was the crux of the movie that connected everyone. I should be more invested in it all more really. Does have a few emotive scenes.

On paper, it has everything that could put in the same category as 50 first dates, how to lose a guy in 10 days, the proposal, even some of both Clooney and Robert's old movies; but it just doesn't have that oomph to make it special, despite the right ingredients. So what's missing?

Those movies aren't the best on paper, but we love them and that's why they're comfort movies. While this is a good movie, it's not a movie I love, but it's in a genre where that's important. I can't explain it, it's a good movie that doesn't necessarily hold a place in my heart. That's what makes you wanna go back and snuggle in bed over and over for movies like this.

Parents Of The Bride
atlasmb23 January 2023
Feuding ex-spouses David and Georgia Cotton (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) rush off to Bali when their daughter decides to abandon her plan to become an attorney. These two can't stand each other, but they try to hide their animosity to present a common front, hoping to steer daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) back on the path to a law career.

Clooney and Roberts can navigate the rom-com genre with their eyes shut, so it is no surprise that they fit neatly into their roles. Kaitlyn Dever is charming and likable on-screen, as is the actor who plays her love interest, Gede (Maxime Bouttier). In fact, the entire cast is enjoyable. The script is simple in the sense that there are no big surprises, no plot twists, no hidden motivations that underlie the action. This is a very straight forward story.

The course of true love never did run smooth, so the Cottons suffer a bumpy ride in (what is meant to be) Bali, but the idyllic scenic beauty is some compensation and it has an ability to sway the emotions.

The film is a pleasant diversion and probably no one will expect more than that.

Clooney and Roberts are not enough to save this film
dromasca29 October 2022
George Clooney and Julia Roberts are two excellent actors and the Academy Awards they each won were well deserved. They are also two very suitable actors for romantic comedies, and if we accept the idea that good romantic comedies can be made with characters (and actors) in their 50s or even 60s, then casting them in the lead roles of a film of this kind may be a good idea. However, to make a quality romantic comedy something else is needed - a believable story that makes us resonate with the characters on the screen, possibly fall in love with them or suffer with them during the screening of the film. 'Ticket to Paradise' by director Ol Parker did not have the chance of such a scenario. By basing their film solely on the charm and magnetism of the two actors, the filmmakers have failed in their attempt to deliver quality entertainment. Clooney (at the peak of his charisma) and Roberts try their best, but it's not enough to save the film from the fate of a mediocre comedy.

David (Clooney) and Georgia (Roberts) married 25 years ago and divorced 5 years later. Lily, their only daughter is finishing her law studies and a wonderful career awaits her starting in a prestigious law office. On the farewell college trip to Bali, the young woman meets a local seaweed farmer, falls in love with him, and decides to remain on the island paradise in the Indian Ocean. The two divorcees decide to join forces to convince their daughter to give up her marriage plans. The reasons are their own experience of a failed marriage but also the fear that the girl is destroying her life, at least according to Western or American patterns. The first 10-15 minutes offer the opportunity for funny exchanges of replicas, filmed with rhythm and using appropriately the technique of parallel frames. These are also the best comedic moments in the film, in my opinion. It is what follows that disappointed me.

'Ticket to Paradise' reminded me of a tradition of American cinema in which the film fits very well. It's about dramas, sentimental comedies or musical films produced in the 30s whose stories took place in the world of the super-rich dressed in tuxedos, sumptuous dresses and fur coats. Spectators of those times, preoccupied with economic crises and - towards the end of the decade - with the danger of war, filled the theaters where charismatic heroes played by actors such as Clark Gable or James Stewart appeared on the big screens. With a few changes in scenery and dialogues, 'Ticket to Paradise' could have been made then. George Clooney is, by the way, the actor closest to the profile of the great American actors mentioned, and he is formidable in this film. But I think that his charm (and to a lesser extent that of Julia Roberts) are not enough to carry the whole movie. The relationship between the two is too predictable and the parallel love story between the two young people is completely missed. Kaitlyn Dever as the daughter is, I think, a terrible miscasting. At no point do we see her as an intelligent young woman making a sensible decision. The way in which the natural paradise of Bali is described is at the level of tourist clips commercials and the presentation of the local culture smella paternalistic Western folklorism. I understand that the intention of the filmmakers is here also an escapist cinema that disconnects its viewers from the problems of the day, but in the absence of authenticity and a somewhat believable story, the effect risks being missed. I'm afraid that only the joy of seeing George Clooney and Julia Roberts again and together is what will be left after watching this film.

A movie to kill time.

Not exactly hilarious, not exactly boring.

Not exactly unexpected, not exactly entirely linear.

Characters are not exactly stale, not exactly growing either.

That's the defining theme here - everything is OK and nothing stands out.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts are great to see on screen and the rest of the cast also play well with what they're given.

Worth a watch once if you're bored and you're into romcoms.

Not exactly a movie worth going to the cinema for though. I'd wait and watch it on some streaming service. I went to see it in the movies because my girlfriend liked the ad for it and you know how it is :)

It's good for taking your girlfriend to the cinema though 🙂

Warning: Spoilers
Young couple falls in love and engaged. Her divorced parents aren't fully onboard. They see the errors of their ways and ultimately fall in love with each other again.

It was so disappointing to watch Clooney and Roberts doing such a boring movie. Very little comedy other than the usual pranks they play on each other off camera. That is the classic Clooney, Pitt, Roberts agenda in their collaboration movies...we goof around and play pranks on each other. No effort in character building or laying down a good story.

I can't even call this a RomCom as it lack both romance or comedy. Not much to see here, just move on and skip this film.

It made me laugh
qubtana17 September 2022
So the last few years the movies weren't that good, but I enjoyed this one, it made me laugh. The actors made me want me to watch it. Also, this generation would definitely enjoy it as they have a habit of rushing things. Besides, I did not get bored nor did I look at my watch. Society and generation play a role. From minute 1 to the end, I can say Clooney and Roberts did a magnificent job. I was also curious about the area and the hotels. I recommend this movie to the current generation. I have not seen women attacking men and things been rushed this fast as much as I saw it with this generation.

Came for the laughs; stayed for the view.
Moonstreams24 April 2023
The setting is beautiful, and filled with Hawaiian twinkling, turquoise waters; sculpted cliffs; leaping porpoises; and sunny beaches. The young couple's budding romance in this island paradise feels natural, and both the actors are charming. The plot and most of the characters are fairly familiar. Clooney and Roberts go through the predictable divorced-couple, witty insults, calamities, and conspiracies. But, they come across as old friends, not old lovers. There are no belly laughs and no sentimental tears. There's no nasty villain nor car chases - No exploding special effects. This movie feels like those black & white classic battles of the sexes. It may make you smile a little and that setting will definitely just keep drawing you in.

What crap
Before20209 November 2022
I guess actors are making movies just to get a check and treating it like a 9-5 job. Something you do and that's it. This movie was slow and boring. I love romantic comedies but this had nothing funny or romantic. Movie starts off with nagging and complaining, it lets you know what garbage you are in for right away. So sad to see once upon a time actors, making this "straight to video" junk. The story is dumb and illogical. Plastic American girl, meets convenient guy on a boat, that looks nothing like his people and all of a sudden she is ready to marry and completely at home with his culture. Ugh there is absolutely nothing watchable anymore. Why do I keep falling for the actors on the cover?

So lightweight it almost floats off, but not bad fun
amca19601 October 2022
I like a fluffy feel-good film as much as the next guy, and this film certainly ticks all the fluffy feel-good boxes. However, it is so sweet, so saccharine, and so undemanding, that the final feeling is one not quite of disappointment, but of a vague sense of missing something.

The partnering of George Clooney and Julia Roberts as the bickering parents is superb. The first part of the film, when they hurl vicious wisecracks at each other, is quite splendid. Their vigorous attempts at point-scoring keep the film humming along very nicely.

In the second half, set in Bali (but shot in Queensland, in northern Australia) is slow going in comparison. It's all very pretty, with the wondrous scenery you'd expect, but the characters all seem to slow down. The islanders themselves are portrayed with a sort of insouciant patronising as happy-go-lucky people who simply enjoy the benefits of good weather and a bountiful ocean, but who are clearly never bothered with any deeper thoughts.

The "unbickering" of the parents meant that there is little humour in the second half, and any small unpleasantness is glossed over quickly. This half actually dragged a bit.

So this is a film with a delightful first half, and a somewhat slow second half. On average, it probably comes out as just all right. It will never be anybody's favourite film, but it's not bad; certainly worth watching as long as you can put your brain into a sort of mental and emotional neutral.

The rom-com that could have been
alie-hunter5 January 2023
While flying home from London I watched 5 movies; "Father of the Bride" (2022), "10 Things I Hate About You", "Notting Hill", "The Holiday", and "Oceans 11". When I heard about this film I was hoping that it was going to be a return to that great era of rom-coms. It had all the right ingredients to be that type of film, but it never got off the ground. I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking, rom-coms generally aren't, but I kept expecting that big moment and it never came. The one character who kept me chuckling was Lily's friend, Wren. I would be way more disappointed if I had to pay for it, but since it's free on Peacock I won't gripe about that.
