It's so bad it's good

Warning: Spoilers
"Basically it's a show that tells you how you could have survived using things you don't have based around a situation you survived with things you did have." A quote from a previous review that perfectly summarises the premise of the show.

In one episode host Creek Stewart shows viewers how you can start a fire without a lighter to survive in the wilderness. He uses an existing fire, places cloth in the fire, covers the existing fire with sand to extinguish it, takes the charred cloth out of the sand and uses a camera lens and the sun to create embers on the cloth, then places the ember in tinders to start a fire.

"There you have it, fire without using a lighter"

Better than I expected

I love shows and films about survival stories, so when I saw this on Netflix I was immediately interested. When I started to watch the first episode I thought the host Creek Stewart was going to be annoying and cringey with his survival tips - but I have to say that the show is a perfect balance of reenactment of survival stories and tips on how what you could do if you found yourself in the same situation. I also like how Creek uses items that they would have had to hand and shows how they could have utilised them. As someone who likes to hike, I have definitely learned a few interesting tips watching this series. Hopefully there will be a season 2!.

The premise of the show is that some unfortunates become stranded in the wilderness.

Often it will start like "we thought we would hike into Alaska after lunch without telling anyone. We came across some angry ducks that wouldn't leave us alone until we gave them all our food, and we threw our shoes and mobile phones at them. Then we realised we were lost...."

Then the little sign pops up on screen that we have all been waiting for: "Day 1" Now we know these guys are going to be stuck here for ages.

The stories are interspersed with segments from a resident "survival expert" (Stewart) - who offers precious nuggets like "caving is like hiking... but underground"

It soon becomes clear that Stewart's credentials aren't quite as great as he makes out -he is however, really, really good at weaving.

Trapped in a desert surrounded by lions?

Why not fashion a wicker chair from reeds to fend them off?

Stuck in a cave?

Why not cut up your rope and backpack to fashion a hanging basket to improve morale?

When there is no conceivable way that weaving can possibly be the solution then Stewart's alternative advice is just as implausible.

If you are cold why not build a survival suit?

Perhaps you find an old mixing bow, a chunk of insulation and a discarded sail - spend a few hours lashing these together with the hundred feet of vine you harvested earlier and you will warm up in no time - saving precious energy.

Yes it is mean spirited to laugh at these peoples misfortune and the host's eccentricity - but it is also really good fun.

Survival tips for those that don't need to survive!

If you are perfectly Able and could quite happily walk away from any of these situations without the need for help, these survival tips will be for you!

In one episode, a poor gentleman has severely injured his spine, leg, punctured his lung and fractured his hip! He had a survival kit in the front of his car which he couldn't reach due to not being able to move and was told that he should use an ax to break the light of his car to start a fire, gather all the car mats in his car and use the wilderness to create makeshift bowls for water (he had a bottle and a small Tupperware to collect water), identify burdock and eat it and use a tire sealants tube and knife (he doesn't have) to carve a whistle into it, use a perfectly placed stick in the tube and put it into the tyre (which he couldn't reach because cannot get off his back) to get attention from the nearby road!

Overall the survival techniques were ridiculous and would not have helped those that were in these situations absolutely ridiculous!

Basically it's a show that tells you how you could have survived using things you don't have based around a situation you survived with things you did have!

Get rid of the tips sections!

The dramatisations are excellent but the every 5 minutes Creek Stewart's tips for survival are annoying at best. Get rid of those and the series will be perfect!!

Awful. Want him to go on the show alone and prove his custom wearing fake @ss. Missed his called as a tv evangelist. Only this he survived was breathing spending checks for acting.

Please, if you ever read this, try Alone, prove me wrong but please wear that outfit. Just the worst thing I have seen in a long time, and that is saying a lot with some many streaming ways for so many others to take this award from you.

There are people I'd have a beer with and there are those I'd wouldn't. I would let you drink the perspiration of the mug that the beer was in. Again awful .
