Entertainment but not entirely satisfying
cherold1 June 2011
First off, to anyone who watches this, the show keeps talking about "Neets" and at first I thought that was something specific to the show but it turns out it's just a slang term that you can look up on wikipedia, which I would advise if you don't want to keep wondering about it the way I did for half the series.

As for the show itself, Eden of the East is an entertaining little anime series with an interesting premise. The main character is likable and mysterious, although only a few of the characters have any real personality. The story is engaging and has a number of clever ideas in it.

On the other hand, I have a few issues. While I watched this as "the complete series," it is actually more like a first chapter of a longer work, which is why there are a couple of movie sequels (the first of which was wretched; haven't seen the other). Also, the central premise is fairly nuts, and you never get any really convincing rationale for it.

Alright, but it's probably not for me
Koumiho26 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished this series (11 episodes, didn't see any movies), and immediately looked it up right after. I don't usually do that, but I did it this time because I was a bit mixed over this show.

Eden of the east (I was drawn to this show bc of the cool name) is about one dude named Akira, who happens to end up in front of the White House naked, shocking a female tourist from japan named Saki. He remembers nothing about himself, and it turns out that he has a special phone that enables him to spend 7 or 8 billion yen that he now happens to have.

My first impressions were that akira was going to end up being some villain, not a knight in shining armor kind of hero if you know what I mean. He seemed off. I also thought this show was going to be some high stakes battle royale with high tensions.

I was wrong on both of those ideas.

For starters, Akira is just a good guy. He does stuff and acts pretty honorably. He never acts selfishly and is definitely one of the good guys. As for the battle royale or high tension mystery I expected...

Eden of the east involves a whole lotta neets. Some laughs and ridiculous moments. It's basically Akira, Saki, and her friends going on about as they do stuff. There was this whole thing about some terrorist attack called "careless Monday" that really affected the nation, and they wonder about that too.

I really don't know how to put this. Apparently there are several other people who also own special phones called seleçao, and they're tasked with making Japan a better place, and only one of them will get to live at the end. Does all this phone game money stuff sound cool and interesting to you? I can't say there was a central focus on these cool, potential action-provoking things. It was mostly these guys going around, doing stuff about solving a mystery. I thought it was weird how they brought up neets so much, sort of praising them. It made me feel like it was supposed to appeal to some neets watching this.

Other than the neet glorification, lemme tell you what else this show has: 10 or 12 seleçao. Akira meets this ruthless dude intent on winning or something, who dies in like ep 3 bc his wife finds out he's cheating on her and murders him. Adios. Then he meets some old doctor whose making life better for old people. Then we focus on a woman, who just so happens to be a serial killer who targets men she thinks are scum. That's about it for a while. Then we meet some quiet, almost softie guy who was behind the careless Monday attacks, intelligent dude who knows stuff, and some guy who's just there. I had high hopes for episodes 1 - 3, but after a while I realized I wasn't gonna see what I wanted. The cool stuff wasn't the focus. I'm not even sure what is. If you asked me what this was about, I could tell you the beginning premise, but not much later. I can tell you the ending: Akira and Co. stop the missile attacks. What happened beforehand? Eh, I don't think I remember. Also apparently this guy named Mr.Outside is behind the game thing. You never see him. You don't even know if he's alive or dead. :/ This show was funny though. I guess. Not a comedy, but there were enjoyable moments. They meet some dude who hasn't left the house in two years because he lost his only pair of pants. I don't know how seriously I'm supposed to take this show.

There were somethings I liked or thought was cool: I thought Akira was a cool dude, I liked the shopping mall, I like how it started in Washington D.C, I liked how it had that phone money world changing game element. I liked character designs for the most part. I think that's it. I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but I'm not sure if I was fully satisfied either. Stuff happened. I don't even remember some of it.

To sum up, I didn't get what I wanted, but I saw some other stuff that was ok. If I happened to wipe my memory though, I don't think I'd rewatch it. Also there were some mysteries at the end but I don't really care :/ it was alright. You can watch it if you want. And no I am not watching the movies, I heard they were bad. This probably wasn't for me. Good writing, good animation, good soundtrack. Characters get a B- though. Saki was really weak. I watched the English dub on Funimation btw.

Quirky, mysterious, charming, and most of all exciting.
Madluke911 February 2010
Eden of the East, a backwards translation of the John Steinbeck Novel East of Eden, is a very mysterious and thrilling anime, following Takizawa and Morimi. The series starts following a series of ten missile strikes on uninhabited areas of Japan, which do not claim any victims. We then move on to three months later where we meet the two main characters of the series: Takizawa is first seen outside of the White house naked, and it becomes apparent he hasn't any memory of his past. He soon meets Morimi and they create a tight bond. Takizawa seems to be involved in an organization consisting of ten 'Selecao', each of whom are given ten billion Japanese dollars, which cannot be directly made into money, but can be used at there disposal. He is also given a phone like gadget, with which he can contact a concierge name Juiz, who in no time at all seems to be able to make any request a reality. The job of the Selecao is to 'Save the Nation', and if they cannot do so before there 10 billion budget runs out, they are killed by the 'Supporter', which is someone no-one knows the identity of. The organization however becomes more and more mysterious, as do the other 9 members.

To try and be balanced i will first try to outline what i believe isn't good about this SHORT anime. Well that is one of the points right there, it's length. Each episode runs about 23 minutes, and there are only 10 before it's all over. That means that the series is all over before you know it, and in my case i was more than ready for more. The second major problem is one which is a big let down in my own humble opinion, and that is that other than the main few characters, the other characters hardly gain any depth, and just seem like cardboard cut-outs, shipped straight out of the typical anime character guide-book. However there is much good to comment on. Firstly the anime has a lot of charm; a unique sense of humour, and great character design. The main characters are also very interesting, and are never short of an interesting situation, and aren't just cardboard cut-outs; they have a lot of depth. The plot is not only very interesting, but also very well crafted and executed, with each episode running smoothly, adding more and more to the story.

So overall the series is very good. If there was more attention to the smaller details, such as the lesser characters, and if the series was longer, the rating could be higher.

A short but brilliant series
Tweekums31 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This series, made by Kenji Kamiyama creator of 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex' is quite different to his earlier work; while both involve a complex mystery this is fair more light hearted, both in the tone of the story and the way it is animated. As the story begins Japanese student Saki Morimi is outside the White House in Washington DC when she meets Akira Takizawa. There is something very strange about him; for a start he is stark naked holding a phone in one hand and a pistol in the other, he has no idea why though as he has no memory. Clues lead them back to Japan where he learns that he is one of twelve people recruited to play a strange game; they have each been given a phone and ten billion yen, they must use this to save Japan and if they spend the money before completing the task or somebody else completes the task first they will be killed. Using the phone they can contact a woman known only as Juiz, she can arrange just about anything for a price. Over the course of the series Akira attempts to discover why he erased his memory and also to find out if he was involved in 'Careless Monday' an event where several missiles hit Japanese cities but amazingly killed nobody and if he caused 20,000 unemployed people (NEETs) to disappear.

This was one of the most engrossing series I've watched in a while; I certainly plan to get the DVDs when they are released here. The only real flaw was that it ended so soon and several mysteries remain unsolved; these will presumably be dealt with in the two feature films that follow; I hope they get released here too. The animation was really good for a TV series and the character design was most appealing; reminding me of Studio Ghibli characters. While this was a mystery there was also plenty of humour such as the computer hacker who is rumoured to have become a recluse when his only pair of trousers blew away, there are also one or two wince- inducing moments involving a serial killer who uses a cigar cutter in a particularly nasty way on her male victims! Don't worry though we don't actually see the deed. I'd certainly recommend this series; especially as it can currently be viewed legally on Funimation's YouTube channel.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Eden of the East, complete series
koabal8511 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I will start off by saying, this series is an absolute must. It's thought-provoking and well animated. The story-line is complex, yet simple to follow.

A previous review of this series complained that it is short, and I would have to agree. At the end of the 11 episodes, I was a bit surprised as to how it cut off; while the season was understandably complete, the whole of the story was obviously unfinished, and it felt like intermission. Not to worry, though, the two feature-length movies helped to clear up a lot of the confusion left behind by the season, and while they're regarded as "spin-offs," the two movies are actually part one and two of the second season. That aside, I definitely feel this could have been longer.

Another complaint was that the supporting cast was too cookie-cutter, but if you stick with it, you can see that isn't so. The FUNimation dubbed versions give a lot more chattiness and slant to Saki's friends, so that helps, but you do have to keep going to the movies to get any sort of idea of who these people are; in the end, though, they don't develop too much, so I'd have to agree with this complaint as well. Still, I don't feel they're the focus, and they by no means detract from the main storyline. Though not much depth is developed for these supporting characters, they reassuringly do have distinct personalities and characteristics by the end.

My biggest complaint, and I hold this to be a spoiler, more of enjoyability - if you're like me - rather than plot: in the series, it's mentioned near the beginning of the series that the Noblesse Oblige phones work by fingerprint recognition. However, Saki uses Akira's phone to send herself a picture, and she continues to use the phone throughout the "King of Eden" movie. There are a couple comments about the fingerprint tech near the end of the first season, but there is no comment on Saki's use of Akira's phone. It may be important to note that all the comments concerning the fingerprint tech are in direct reference to Seleção IV's phone, and not Akira's, leaving room for interpretation that he had it disabled, or had Juis (Juiz) alter it for Saki to use.

Those things aside, I really enjoyed the series. I sorely wish for something more, but I think, while the ending is not what we as humans always want (a neatly tied-up happy ending), it was appropriate, and more importantly, it wasn't definite. There is room for more, and I'm just happy to have been able to come along for the ride. Not even something so huge as the continuity error of the phone was enough to keep me from finishing and thinking about it 24/7.

*When you watch the second movie, "Paradise Lost," watch past the credits!

It was pretty good but the plot was rather uninteresting
Irishchatter31 May 2019
The characters were well put together like you do get the "Terror in resonance" vibes but at the same time, the plot didn't seem that interesting. A guy who is a charmer as well as a terrorist who has a ton of naked nerdy men worshipping him.....ok that's just plain odd. I mean odd in a meh way. I mean I would've liked if this anime was rather serious then lighthearted like I think it wouldve fit better on the show.

Yeah it's an alright anime but I wouldn't be bothered watching the 2 movies anytime soon cause couple of the episodes I watched did drag on. The anime did tho get a few bunch of great English Dub cast (J Michael Tatum for instance) so that's the main reason why I'm giving it a 7/10!

Unique and exciting political intrigue thriller, kind of
trcky122 April 2011
It's hard to describe the type of series this is. It involves the NEET class and the economical-political attitude amongst Japan's youth toward the older upper-class management. One of these youths, Takizawa, mysteriously comes into possession of a phone that enables him to enact changes in his and others' lives. Fate causes him to meet Saki, a recent graduate seeking employment, and the adventure begins.

The tone of the film is lighthearted, even though the plot deals heavily in political intrigue and adventure. The story is well-written to reveal stepwise all the events occurring before, during, and after Takizawa's and Saki's fateful meeting, including some quirky romance, intrigue, and action. The series ends on a fun and exciting solution to some of the problems that Takizawa encounters along the way, but leaves us with new questions and lead-ins to the following 2 feature films for the series.

I've seen the feature films, and unfortunately, they don't maintain the same level of excitement, mystery, and fun that the original series does. It feels as they're made simply to finish the story lines with logical endings. I'd recommend just watching the original series, and even though it's tough, don't bother with the following feature films to answer the questions created by the series.

It is ONE of THE BEST Animes this year
Snowboarawler13 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
OK here it is, one of the best Animes this year.

To say it like this, I cant even stand up anymore. This will blow your mind. I am Very picky when it comes to Anime and this was so good i even wanted to comment it. It is about a guy that has a phone with 8.2 digital yen on it, he is a Seleção (agent to save Japan). He wiped his memories after a terrorist attack referred to as "Careless Monday", then he goes back to find out who he is.

The animation is great, is not like... pointy but it is kinda soft? But the music was great and the ending was beautiful and so well made, the idea to kill with your hands without doing anything is so sweet.

I hunger for more like a zombie, but as always I'm lucky. There will be two movies ^_^

Just amazing
theunender30 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched anime for quite some time, I can honestly say this series and the two movies that follow it are among my favorite. The show has been criticized for similarities to the Bourne Identity series, but it honestly branches out in such a new and interesting way that that is easy to look passed.

Right from the very first episode you'll want to keep watching just to see all your questions answered and to see more of the main characters. Akira and Saki have something inexplicable about them as characters that just makes viewers fall in love with them and want to see where their story leads.

While the actual episodes are short in length and number, their content is still phenomenal and the movies really help to continue the series and give the viewers some much wanted closure on the overall plot.

Overall, the characters are lovable and unique, the animation gives a soft feel to the entire environment, and the plot will keep you glued to the screen. I highly recommend giving the series a shot and seeing what the Selecao can do to save the world.

Great Show, But Skip The Movies
Foxbarking9 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I came across "Eden of the East" by accident the other night when I could not sleep and went flipping through Netflix. What I thought was just going to be makeshift entertainment became something I absolutely loved. My recommendation, however, is that if you watch the series and also enjoy it, do not follow up by watching the movies. The movies are the two most anti-climactic episodes of anime I have ever seen.

The premise for "Eden of the East" is absolutely fascinating. Akira Takizawa (or so he thinks that is his name) finds himself outside of the White House completely naked and holding a gun and a cell phone. All memories about his identity are completely gone and his only memories are factual information about the world. A girl, Saki, has thrown a quarter at the White House in order to make a wish and Takizawa distracts them, helping her out.

After he and Saki join as friends, they decide to return to Japan together and this is where the plot starts forming. Three months previously, there is a missile attack on Tokyo which amazingly claimed no victims. However, information regarding the attack was not used to prevent it, which led to the day being called "Careless Monday." Takizawa assumes that he has played some role in the attacks but does not know what that role was.

Takizawa quickly learns that he and 10 other Japanese citizens were picked by a man known only as Mr. Outside to compete in a game to see who could be Japan's savior. Each player is referred to as a Seleção and is given a cell phone that is loaded with 10 billion yen (approximately 100 million US dollars) and connects them to a concierge named Juiz who seems to be able to make anything happen. Each Seleção has to spend the money in order to save Japan, and if they use the money for selfish matters or they run out of money without saving Japan, they will be killed. A mysterious 12th player known as the Supporter carries out the killing of a broke player.

Even though there are only 11 23 minute episodes and two short movies, this only scratches the surface of the plot. The 11 episode series also ends with a whole lot of questions left unanswered, which the movies then attempts to continue and answer. The only problem is that while the 11 episodes are brilliant, the two movies are so anti climactic that I wish I never had the questions answered.

If you like a good thriller/mystery anime, you will love this show. My attempt to find a show to ease my boredom resulted in me watching the show in one sitting. However, if I could unwatch the movies, I would. Having the questions not answered was much better than knowing.

Of the east
WeAreLive9 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
On November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be called as "Careless Monday," does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later... Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory. And he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.

I really enjoyed this series from start to finish.

I will admit there were some concepts I did find weird but I thought it was good regardless.

The animation was and art style was well done.

The dub was excellent.

Akira and Saki are very likeable characters.

The intro is definitely something i listen to time and again.

What would you do if you are given a bunch of money to make a world a better place
Angels_Review19 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this is a rather interesting show, especially how they seem to show a lot of nudity. This feels like the Japanese idea for the Hunger Games a bit (now, I don't really know all of the hunger games but this is what I gathered). Normal people getting hold of something and end up playing out a 'game' for the enjoyment of some guy that has a lot of money. If the person does not do what is told, they die. Now this has no really baring on the story much but I am a bit surprised that they had actually brought in the freedom tower.

I have to hand it to Saki, if I was in her situation and met a naked man, I would probably just run and not give him my coat and hat. Then she also goes back home with him as well. She just seems a little two innocent to me to be any real impact on the story plot. I wish she was a little more of a tomboyish type of girl and not such a pushover to fall in love like that. And even though she is like that, I felt myself wanting her and Akira together.

Akira seems a bit off in the head, and seems to be similar to L from Death Note in how childish he is. Throughout the whole show, he just tries to figure out who he is. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be anything more about him that I can say without large spoilers. I just don't get why he has angel wings on his dog though.

Now, I only was able to watch the dub version and even though it was pretty good, some of the voices seemed a bit off in some aspects. I am sure that the parts that were in America would have been better in the original version.

The music is really nice. I love the openings mystic ring to it and I would probably place it onto my music player. There really isn't much other music in this that stands out at all. It just seems a bit to low to even be heard. There was only one that stood out from the rest and it was what they used in rather gentle and somber times. It was a nice piano and violin melody.

Now, I have to tell you that the ending of this is something that only M. Night Shyamalan could only make this up. Really, I just can't believe that they did that and pretty much told you to watch the 2 movies that came out for any real closer.
