Too bad, this movie had a lot of potential because of the talents starring in it. But they failed anyhow...
imseeg20 August 2022
The good: beautiful photography, with really good actors performing well and delivering dialogues that are truly good. So what's wrong with it then?

The bad: the leading actress (however good an actress she might be) over acts. She acts way too naive to be believable. Perhaps others wont mind this at all. But I got annoyed by this and I couldnt get into the story anymore...

More bad: there isnt really much of a story to begin with though. No real drama. It's more of a slowburning portrait of a girl coming of age in experiencing her first love romances.

It's too touchy feely sentimental for my taste. And (again) the leading actress OVER acts, which is such a pity, because this movie had much going for it potentially....

This Stick Isn't So Sharp
daoldiges4 August 2022
When I read the synopsis on Sharp Stick, I thought this could be interesting, particularly in the hands of Lena Dunham. There are a few interesting elements here, like when the naive lead character first discovers sex and becomes initially obsessed with porn and makes it her mission to try all of the different sex positions/styles she discovers through porn herself, and tracks that journey via two large posters taped to her bedroom wall. As for the performances they're all solid and contribute something to the overall experience. Personally, the one exception might be Jennifer Jason Leigh. In general, I like her and think she's done some great work, but for me her selection struck me as JJL doing another typical JJL type of work and would have liked to see someone not so expected in this role. The film looked good but the story itself just didn't develop in a way that made me really care much about the characters, but was rather just observing them. The Dunham character and her husband in particular seemed random with no backstory or development. Despite some solid elements Sharp Stick just isn't so sharp.

Surprisingly watchable even with a mixed bag plot; the romance shines despite limited screen time
ambusched9428 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was expecting a worse film from Lena Dunham, but Sharp Stick surprisingly is alright and it's watchable, yet it's still a mixed bag film concept and plot. I like indie films that naturally flow pace-wise and Sharp Stick's plot unfolds organically without feeling forced in the first half. While I think having a coming-of-age story set as a sex comedy can be interesting and full of complexity, the later half of the plot just lacked in storytelling and felt tedious once the main character Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth) became obsessed with a porn star and inviting all these one-night stands to her apartment room, so she can check off on a literal list all the new sex acts and kinks she has tried. I just lost interest when it came to that point in the storyline. However, I do like the message stressed in the end that no one is perfect at sex, there is no such thing as "perfect sex," and one's self-esteem should never be affected because of "bad sex" one has experienced.

I've always wanted to see Jon Bernthal (he's easy on the eyes) as a romantic interest and this film achieves that lol. Bernthal as Josh and Froseth as Sarah Jo have natural chemistry in their scenes and I must be the only one that wanted their relationship to work out in the end in someway.

Recommended if you like indie films. I look forward to seeing Dunham's future directorial projects.

A character study that forgets the study part
rescott-9935031 December 2022
There's a lot of Lena Dunham haters out there, but I'm actually not one of them, even though I think she's not as clever a writer as she seems to think she is. Nevertheless, I enjoyed TINY FURNITURE, I thought GIRLS was a worthwhile show, her direction of the INDUSTRY pilot was strong. All I'm doing here is establishing that I can be objective about Dunham's work...

Okay...so SHARP STICK. I did not enjoy it. It is a character study of a naive, but damaged young woman named Sarah Jo. She's a 26-year old virgin who had to have a hysterectomy in high school. (My wife endured a similar ordeal, although somewhat later in life, so that part of the story moved me.) But the way Sarah Jo is written came off as completely false to me. Her journey of sexual discovery would have been more interesting if we the audience could determine what exactly of value she learned about herself? She has a dysfunctional blended family that we learn almost nothing about. Why are they the way they are? Is that really Jennifer Jason Leigh and what is she doing here? The sex scenes aren't sexy, the scenes that should be comedic are flat or just plain baffling and at the end of the movie it felt like Dunham thought she had made some grand statement about female sexuality and personal discovery, but I was just confused and kind of grossed out. Skip this if it shows up on your Hulu home page.

Absolutely Abysmal
cliffmegatdi31 August 2022
This has to be one of the worst movies ever made. 80 minutes feel like 3 hours as a 26 year struggles to figure out her sex life.

To say it was bad feels like an insult to the word bad. They haven't even made words to describe the kind of mental torture that comes with watching this movie. Deplorable is the only word that might come close.

Lena Dunham has proven herself a hack of a film maker. How did someone read this script and go "yeah, sounds like a hit!" If these are the original ideas Hollywood is funding these days the executives need to be fired immediately.

I feel bad for the cast. On paper it seems like such a sure thing, but my god was it a complete waste of time.

Skip this one. Save yourself.

Didn't do anything for me, sorry
paul-allaer30 December 2022
As "Sharp Stick" (2022 release; 86 min) opens, we are introduced to Treina and Sarah Jo, sisters in their 20s living at home with mom. Sarah Jo is 26 and still a virgin. She works as a nanny/housekeeper of sorts and one day she makes a move onto Josh, her employer and a married father...

Couple of comments: this is the latest project from writer-producer-director Lena Dunham, who for good measure also stars (as Josh's wife). Even though the movie's premise seems a little unlikely, given the standard of excellence typically exhibited in Dunham's projects, I decided to give this a try. Alas, I shouldn't have. I don't know exactly what happened here, but something went very wrong. Bottom line is that I never bought into any of the characters, least of all Sarah Jo as the 26 yo virgin. And the storyline doesn't feel credible or likely for most of this either. Despite some great acting talent attached to this (including Kristine Froseth. Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Jon Bernthal, just to name those, this movie just didn't do anything for me, sorry...

"Sharp Stick" bypassed US theaters altogether and went straight to VOD upon its release this past summer. It recently started streaming on Hulu, where I caught it. I can't really recommend this to anyone in good conscience. Of course don't take my word for it, so if you are a fan of Dunham's prior output, I'd suggest you check this out (with lowered expectations), and draw your own conclusion.

Watchable but flawed
istara7 January 2023
I watched Sharp Stick as an in-flight movie so not at optimal picture quality, but it was still a reasonably enjoyable movie.

The main problem is the age and character of the main protagonist. As another reviewer commented, it seems as though she was written as a much younger character, but made older in the final script (possibly to avoid offending current paranoia/social mores?) It isn't really credible that any woman in her mid-twenties, living in LA, wouldn't have heard of basic intimate acts. Particularly with a very sassy, savvy sister.

There is a lot of intimate action in this, though in terms of nudity it's not explicit. I thought the first scenes were well done, but the central plot of adultery was somewhat brushed aside along with the husband and wife. Why she later does what she does - extreme behaviour/acts for anyone - didn't seem very realistic.

I did enjoy Scott Speedman as adult actor Vance. Luka Sabbat was also very good, although the final "happy ending" (not intended as a pun though I suppose it could be!) wasn't convincing, and was odd. I didn't feel the animated sequences really fit the tone of the rest of the movie.

But all in all it's interesting and certainly worth a view on a long haul flight.

Durham, what is going on?
chenp-5470820 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this back at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival

The story is about Sarah Jo who is a naive 26-year-old living on the fringes of Hollywood with her mother and sister. She just longs to be seen. When she begins an affair with her older employer, she is thrust into an education on sexuality, loss and power. Director Lena Durham has become quite a figure with her controversies and there are some things she had said that I thought were quite terrible or I simply disagree with. Her first feature was "Tiny Furniture" which I thought was fun and decent. Durham does have talent to write and have some funny moments with her style. "Sharp Stick" however, I don't even know what happened here.

Durham seemed to create a story about sex and youth, yet, takes those concepts and make a huge mess. The story comes off incredibly idiotic and annoying like if someone is trying to smash a hammer across your head as you are bleeding from the eyes and skull. The actors are all talented but the characters they are given makes them really unbearable and really punchable at times. Many conversations and dialogue were came off pretentious and all over the place as if Durham had no idea what she was wanting to say to or to present in this movie.

What is the point? Why are we meant to like this character? Does Durham really lost her sense of purpose or was she drunk making this? Because it did feel like a drunk a person would make this such a mess of a movie.

If I'm right frame of mind, can be very reflective
eegeddes449 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the movie FEELS so unnecessary when watching it. But the second half and CLIMAX (hahaha) is worth the shocking beginning. I was left changed a bit by the end of the movie.

Although Jennifer Jason Leigh's character is ridiculous and angered a REAL mom like me in ending. I think her character was necessary, but PLEASE, don't make me puke. She did not make sure Sarah Jo accomplished anything.

***SPOILER*** There is zero way that Sarah Jo was a girl scout. Activities and support of a child requires ACTUAL work and money and time and care.

Lena Dunham is extremely talented, whether or not you see eye to eye with her. This movie makes you think. (Even if it means thinking about turning it off for the first 30 minutes.) And don't be swayed by the gratuitous, but VERY real sex scenes. I think she should hold back a little bit, if Dunham wants to get her message across. A lot of people would be turned off by the extremism. But don't let that stop you from appreciating a really good movie.

This movie is beyond ridiculous in the worst way possible. I don't know where to begin with this cinematic miasma but please rest assured that this movie falls flat.
LadyAnnaMedusa9 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The lead female is portrayed like she is overly naïve and mentally challenged, knowing nothing about sex/love/relationships/intimacy despite the fact that she lives with her incredibly promiscuous sister and former groupie mother. Is she supposed to be portraying an autistic young woman who, at 26, discovers her sexuality? Is her innocence supposed to be endearing? Charming or quirky? Plausibly realistic? I have no idea.

It seems like Lena Dunham started writing a coming of age satire and then forgot halfway thru and tried to make it a 'think piece' and FAILED MISERABLY. Do not waste your time.

Incredible movie what's wrong with you haters?
kihjhdtsi8 January 2023
I guess people are starting to get used to Netflix movies being the norm. This movie is absolutely incredible. What a fun wonderful great time and an incredible trip into the life of a not so typical, but definitely interesting character. Dunham puts out another incredible and original movie. The story at the end direction are incredible and it felt good from the beginning to the end. It didn't lose me anywhere and I feel like it. It was too short. I want to go back to that world and have some more laughs. If you don't like this movie and you don't like my review, then go back and watch Stranger Things another 25 times.

Edgy, original, well cast, watchable cheap indie
danieljfarthing6 March 2023
In writer/director Lena Dunham's edgy, original, cheap indie "Sharp Stick" quietly on-the-spectrum care-worker Kristine Froseth lives in Hollywood with hippy-dippy single mum Jennifer Jason Leigh & wannabe internet sensation sis Taylor Paige (the rising star so good again). At 26 virgin Froseth suddenly undergoes a sexual awakening, first via simple Jon Bernthal (hubbie of Dunham, the parents of the Down Syndrome lad Froseth cares for) then thru various strangers she uses to tick off a check-list built thru watching porn (!) particularly her fave adult-star Scott Speedman. It's certainly out there, with meaning unclear, but is well-cast, original, watchable fare.

School Play.
neilprivate24 December 2022
This was made by the kids that were rejected from the high school drama group. I can't think of a category this doesn't stink. 2/10 for being in focus with clear audio.

The non plot meanders aimlessly as we're slowly and without a hint of subtlety directed to watch the protagonist, because she's obviously going through some stuff. We're also given back story using the heaviest tools... come on... show don't tell!

Overacting from most of the cast can only have come from direction... or maybe the whole cast was high?

I loved Girls, but this isn't even worth your time to find out. Fly a kite, write an awful review or take up building... but give this a miss. 2/10.

Huge NO
dimiltsiou25 July 2023
Lena Dunham should stop directing movies. Ultimately, the success of a movie with strong feminist themes depends on its execution, the perspective of the viewer, and how well it balances its message with other elements of storytelling. A lot of people may argue that presenting strong feminist themes can be empowering and helps to challenge societal norms, encouraging positive change. However, Dunham fails to create a good quality movie, all of her work is boring and meaningless and fails to even pass a message and educate younger girls (this is a coming of age movie). I am not even sure why I watched it. I believe I was prejudiced before I even saw it.

Actually a blunt stick
Oilerpa23 February 2024
An interesting movie with an interesting premise.it has its moments, but not very many.

One thing about this movie gets me. How can a 27 year old be this niece or stupid. I get the shes a Virgin and doesn't know a lot about sex. But this girl is very stupid about everything. People have to be blunt with her and explain things. They just make her seem dumb.

This is a movie just to watch and not get caught up in it. If you're looking for nudity or a sexy movie, this is not it. I wouldn't recommend this movie for a popcorn flick. Go watch something else. If you desire clothes on sex, this is the movie for you.

Loved it
Le_Nausea23 August 2022
Cute and whimsical, a lil unrealistic at times whilst completely mirroring real life at others. A film with a truly important message for the young women of today. I nearly looked it up before watching, then saw it was Lena Dunham and decided not to, knowing all the anti-feminist backlash she gets when she even breathes on a project lol.

Brilliant exposure of women struggling for agency in male order.
maurice_yacowar2 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One might expect a Lena Dunham Rom-Com to have teeth, candour, shock But nothing prepared me for the excellence of this work - the insightful script, intense shooting style, the uniformly detailed and delicate performances.

As the title suggests, the film is about the pain of being a woman in an America under the lingering reign of phallicism. Even in this all-woman family, where all three principals have asserted their agency, the male power still causes damage.

At 25 Sarah Jo is a virgin already bearing embarrassing midsection scars from surgery. The emotional scars come here. She is an extremely competent caregiver for needy children, the Downs boy Zach in her opening job, the cerebral palsy girl at the end. Her free-spirited mother, Marilyn, has mastered the art of using men then dumping them. Sister Treina is a flashy assertive African-American, who usually appears in costume whether for or between shooting herself performing for video streaming. . While Mother Marilyn cruises on her even keel - usually stoned - her daughters find opposing trajectories. Treina's confidence is smashed when the boyfriend she's thinking of marrying denies responsibility for her pregnancy and dumps her. In a remarkably current scene, her family honours her regretful need for an abortion and celebrates the child she would have had.

In the central plot Sarah Jo's surrender of virginity leads to her first romantic betrayal. She admires her employer Josh's engaging relationship with his Downs son. She also believes his claim of detachment from his pregnant wife, Heather (an opulent performance by Dunham). The wife's expensive pregnancy suggests Josh was not sexually engaged.

For her initiation Sarah Jo approaches Josh in the laundry room, where he's playing the New Man, keeping it clean. To his credit he first resists the invitation - but then submits. With Heather away selling real estate Josh steadily increases his sexual activity with Sarah Jo.

Sarah Jo is initially discomfited by his oral performance on her, but comes to relish it as they grow together. Son Zach is a greater bond between them than between his parents. Josh even proposes they take him and leave together. But Heather, on the verge of delivery, recognizes the chain Josh gave Sarah Jo. Confronted, Josh confesses his affair and angrily expels Sarah Jo. That cool New Man turns into a blithering betraying loser that his strut and warm energy hid for so long.

Shaken both by her sister's and her own betrayal, Sarah Jo opts not to flee the sharp stick of romantic disappointment but to toughen herself by comprehensive experience. She proceeds to work through two poster-size lists of sexual practices. Now she is the aggressor, the user - but still not always successful. She doesn't get her "necrophilia." Her plan to use Josh's buddy Yuli as recipient of her blow job - the metaphor of which Josh taught her - is thwarted by shared cocaine, that other "blow." Josh also introduces Sarah Jo to internet porn. There she discovers her porn hero, Vance LeRoy, "king" of the tattooed studs. Her fan letter leads to his video message encouraging her to stop her trivial erotics and respect her possibility for a meaningful love affair.

At this point this hard-headed anatomy of sexual politics reveals its true genre, romantic comedy. Sarah Jo meets the engaging Africa American Arvin when he answers her ad for someone to blow. As he's not that casual, he brings her some drinks and wants to talk first. The free blow job doesn't impress him, because his work on porn film crews exposes him to them daily. That career enables him to convey her letter to Vance and return with the video message.

This could be the all-time classic "Meeting Cute" of the Rom-Com. Coupled with her new child-care job, this burgeoning romance makes for the genre's happy ending. As for Josh, we last see him suffering in the relationship he could serially betray but not leave. That stick is not so sharp after all.

I liked this movie it was a little odd but made me smile
hmascully2 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It is an interesting one .......naive is a good word for the main actress ......not sure I'd call it a comedy although it is light & fluffy but never really gets into the drama or comedy it could have been. The funniest bit was her crush on the porn star ....and then he turned out to be a good guy giving her some sage advice on self esteem. The Married lover turned out to be a big disappointment for her ...promised so much delivered a couple of good times but let her down badly. But was played beautifully by Jon Bernthal extremely believable reminded me of my past lol ... guy was weak and not worthy of her affection in the end .. .....anyway it was an interesting way to spend 90 odd minutes ..her "mission " of sexual discovery was interesting.

Don't trust the low numbers
billybobalou29 June 2023
This movie is better than most. I think the sexual content pushes the numbers down with the Puratins. Lena Dunham's name seems to get people unjustly up set to.

I starts a little slow. I give every movie 10 minutes before bailing. This was close but I'm glad I didn't. The lead character seems a little too naive at first although it gets a little better. It is just her character and it's what makes the movie. This isn't a serious movie and clearly doesn't try to be. It has uncomfortable moments, funny moments, sexual moments and the end doesn't leave you guessing.

It has a good story, isn't longer than needed and isn't shot with a shaky cam or cell phone meaning you won't get dizzy if you have an 70" plus TV. If you are uptight, stay away. If you are one of those not offended by much, you will enjoy it.
