Out with the Old, in with the Newt

Ned Flemkin is a dreamer, and his parents are rather mundane. He decides to buy a Newt at the pet store with his money, despite wanting an elephant. He is appalled to learn the Newt doesn't do anything exciting, and storms back to the pet store to take it back. The pet store owner gives him some food for the newt. The Newt slurps too much of the food, and comes to life, much to Ned Flemkin's disbelief. Ah. I found this online the other day. I spent so many wonderful hours with this show on Teletoon many years ago. It was so creative, and really focused on not only entertaining the young ones, but teenagers/adults as well. I am now 28 years old, and I can safely say I enjoy it as much as I did when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older, I get all the obscure jokes as well. I wish I had a newt that could turn into anything, like this one seems to do. He does impersonations of Fred Flintstone, among others. I did feel Ned gave in a bit too easily to the situation. If a Newt came to life, I would freak the hell out. That's a minor carp, though.

What Rock Through Yonder Window Breaks?

Ned has a major crush on a girl at school. Ned is much too shy to ask her to hang out with him, and ends up making clumsy attempts to get her attention. He turns to his best pal, Newt for his advice. It turns out to be a big mistake, and they get into a mess, Ned might wind up regretting. This episode is so cute. Many of us have had a crush when we were younger, and couldn't comprehend what love was. I empathized with Ned's plight. His silly noises and his facial expressions whenever he went around his crush, made me chuckle. Newt also makes some great references to the movie Rocky, and the Alien franchise. The funniest moment for me is when Newt pulls a Marlon Brando and yells out Stella at night to try and get Ned's crush attention. You could really tell at this juncture, how special this series would be. If you wanna remember what it was like to have a elementary school crush, you'll most likely find a lot to enjoy about this one.
