Nobody Has To Battle Elements More Than Alaskans!
ccthemovieman-17 March 2010
This intense TV special was divided into four segments, each one with amazing facts and footage. Alaska is not for the feint-hearted!

1 - Avalanches - This was mainly about how the people of this amazing state deal with this problem, one that causes a dozen deaths or more every year. Juneau is a city that lives right next to water but also at the bottom of a huge mountain range. It looks like a very pretty town but, man, it looks dangerous. They get a lot of avalanches. We are shown the ways to prevent them, but they don't always work!

2 - Wild animals - When the run out of food, some pretty scary animals begin foraging in towns or even a big city like Achorage, as is shown here. We even see the results of bears trashing the insides of homes. How about a big Alaskan Moose - "the Mack Truck of deer," as labeled in this program. You have to see the size of them to believe it. Grizzly bears? Well, don't get near one of them.

3 - Weather - What looks the scariest here are the truckers driving on "Thompson's Pass," the snowiest area in the world, trying to clear snow all night long. It's brutal. We also see men driving a humongous hovercraft so people in remote areas can get food and supplies, which includes mail, each week.

4 - Volcanoes. This program shows how many active volcanoes there are in Alaska. Suffice to say it's surprisingly high. Perhaps the scariest, scene in this hour-long show was listening to the pilots for a few minutes when their big airplane almost plummeted to earth after going through think ash spewing from a volcano. Oh, yes, Alaska gets earthquakes, too, and we see what happened when they got the second-worst in history.

Alaska, as shown on this program on a map superimposed over the "lower 48" is so big it will astound you. It also has the roughest weather in the United States. It isn't just the weather that is "extreme," there's more and you'll have to check out this program to discover it all (pun intended, as this was shown on the Discover HD Network.).

Overall, this is an interesting TV show and one that really made me shake my head in awe at some of things Alaskans have to battle. They must have a lot of tough people up there!
