Warner Bros. is looking to breathe some new life into its long-in-development “Bobbie Sue” pic, as it has set Gina Rodriguez to star in the title role with Charles Stone III directing.
While the studio viewed the project as a priority since acquiring it in 2008, it was looking for the right actress for the lead, at one point eyeing Cameron Diaz to star before scheduling got in the way. Sources say the studio has already started meeting with other talent to star with Rodriguez with hopes to start filming later this year.
The story follows Sue, who after being raised among five rowdy brothers in blue-collar South Boston, is a scrappy, headstrong young lawyer who lands a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. But after discovering her powerful client, a lifelong idol and fellow Southie native,...

Exclusive: Tiffany Haddish might be the hottest young film actress out there right now. Several studios bid for her fall slot, and scrappy Paramount Pictures just won the day. She’ll start production in October on Limited Partners, a pitch that the studio bought for her last October, right after she emerged as a breakout talent in Girls Trip. Miguel Arteta will direct the comedy written by Sam Pitman & Adam Cole-Kelly.
The premise is a friendship comedy about two hard charging best girlfriends who build a juggernaut company, and find their relationships tested when they are made a big buyout offer. Suddenly all the differences that made them perfect odd couple partners put them at war, threatening their business and personal relationships. There are shades of Superbad meets Bridesmaids, I’m told. Among those who vied for Haddish was Warner Bros with Bobby Sue, a comic vehicle originally developed for Cameron Diaz,...

Bill Hader will be seen next in Greg Mottola‘s sci-fi road-trip film Paul, but the actor comedian has two new projects in the pipeline. Paul premieres at SXSW this weekend and will arrive in theaters on March 18. I am excited to see this when it arrives.
The Playlist reports that Hader is working with director Akiva Schaffer and Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps production company on a film called Henchman. The script, originally titled, Bobbie Sue, was conceived and written by Russell Sharman, Owen Egerton, and Chris Mass, who appeared on the 2008 Blacklist. Hader and Schaffer are currently rewriting the script with an eye to star and direct, respectively.
Here is what Hader had to say abou that project, which is currently looking for actors to play the other henchman:
”[21 Laps] came to us with this script that Akiva and I are now reworking. The film is about two guys who don’t realize it,...

Is Bill Hader going to be one of the next true breakout comedy stars? He's certainly one of the highlights of Greg Mottola's Paul, where he steals just about any scene in which he appears -- and does so while working opposite some great comic talent. It may be a little early for Bill Hader to really break out in Zach Galifianakis or Danny McBride style, but he's heading that direction, and now has two films in development that could offer him new ways to earn the affections of a broad audience. (As if SNL wasn't enough. But it is never enough, as so many movies have proved.) The Playlist [1] got details on both films. First is Vaughn Meader, which is set up at Ben Stiller's company and is being written by The Wrestler and Big Fan screenwriter Rob Siegel. The film is based on "American comedian and impersonator" Vaughn Meader,...

So, now what, for this year’s major Oscar winners? Nope, they’re not going to Disney Land.
Jeff Bridges & Christoph Waltz will be seen a lot in the coming months; they each have big movies coming out in December (Green Hornet for Waltz; True Grit and Tron Legacy for Bridges).
Sandra Bullock is taking her time deciding on a new project; she’s contemplating a legal comedy called Bobbie Sue that once had Cameron Diaz involved. We may not see her on screen again until next year.
As we’ve already reported on this blog, Precious screenwriter, Geoffrey Fletcher, is writing the screenplay for Bourne director Doug Liman’s upcoming Attica project; he also plans to return to his director roots, with 2 projects in the works (one possibly involving Forest Whitaker), but nothing is certain yet. See my post on a meeting he had with Queen Nefertari Productions.
