The second episode.
Tom is still living with his son and daughter-in-law and, without realising, making both of them miserable. When Harriet takes a bath, Tom casually walks in and starts shaving, ignoring her discomfort.
The trio catch a train to Winkle Bay for the reading of Tom's wife's will . The old girl did not approve of Dick's choice of a wife, and leaves him nothing, while Tom gets the princely sum of £5 a week. Hardly a fortune. Dick and Harriet are amused, until they realise it will mean they are stuck with the old man for the duration. Dick urges Tom to get a job. There is a vacancy for a lift operator in an office block, so Tom goes along for an interview...
When I tell you the interviewer - Mr. Reinhardt ( John Abineri ) - is a German, you can immediately guess what will happen next. Tom cannot speak to a German without mentioning World War 2 and the 1966 World Cup. Reinhardt is offended and throws him out. The buffet car attendant is played by Larry Martyn, a familiar face in British sitcoms ( he played Jimmy Jewel's son-in-law in 'Spring & Autumn' )
Funniest moment - a depressed Tom tries to open a bottle of pills, and struggles with the child-proof top ( haven't we all struggled with those things at one time in our lives? ). He gets the bottle open, only to lose the tablets down the toilet. When Dick finds the empty bottle, he thinks the old boy has taken an overdose!
Finally, a quick mention of the passing of Anita Carey, who was the original 'Pat' in 'I Didn't Know You Cared'. She was a versatile actress, able to do both comedy and drama. R. I. P.
