Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film It Came From the Desert at the Horror Channel Frightfest Halloween event, director Marko Mäkilaakso shares his admiration for Roger Corman, love of B-Movies, spoofing and overcoming homeland obstacles.
It Came From the Desert is inspired by Cinemaware’s cult 1980s video game, which in turn was motivated by the giant creature feature craze infesting 1950s Hollywood. What was the main inspiration for you?
There’s so many movies and makers which inspired Icftd, but the main inspiration was exactly that; creature feature infested 1950s Hollywood films, and the legendary Cinemaware Desert games and creature features and action comedies I grew up with in the 1980s. I love B-movies and mainstream filmmakers who give homages to those in their works, like Joe Dante, John Landis, Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg etc. There’s something so pure and honest about B-movies and even...

In 68 Kill, starring Matthew Gray Gubler and AnnaLynne McCord (and based on Bryan Smith's novel of the same name), a simple heist goes awry (honestly, when does a simple heist ever go according to plan?). Following its theatrical and VOD release this past summer, the new film from Trent Haaga is coming to Blu-ray and DVD this winter from Scream Factory, and we have a look at the cover art and release details:
From Scream Factory: "We are pleased to announce that we have a new IFC Midnight films planned for release on Blu-ray & DVD this January!
68 Kill – Trailer-dwelling, sewage-pumping Chip (Matthew Gray Gubler, Criminal Minds) may not lead the most glamorous life, but he's got one thing going for him: he's head over heels infatuated with his girlfriend Liza (AnnaLynne McCord, 90210). I arrived at Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within about two years after its release, having grown tired of survival horror and the staleness of the genre as a whole. However, when I finally settled in for a playthrough, I couldn’t let it go. Roughly fifteen hours later, I’d guided embattled hero Detective Sebastian Castellanos through a series of terrifying encounters and remarkably freaky scenarios inside one of the most hellish mental hospitals in video game history. It was a grueling experience, complete with sweaty hands and muffled screams, but it reminded me of why, exactly, I’d spent so much time with Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and their ilk over the years.
Naturally, I had high expectations for The Evil Within 2, especially considering the team responsible for the first outing — writer and Troma vet Trent Haaga, in particular — was returning for yet another horrifying go-around. Thankfully, the...

Seemingly inhabiting the same universe as Cheap Thrills, the film he co-wrote with David Chirchirillo, 68 Kill, Trent Haaga’s second feature as director (his first being Chop) is a similar deep-dive into the fringes of American society – an underbelly that walks the fine line between morality and depravity. A world where people will do anything for money. Or so it would seem.

Fantasia 2017 Interview: Trent Haaga and Matthew Gray Gubler on 68 Kill, Death, Love, Sex and Biting
[Pictured above is AnnaLynne McCord as Liza.] Trent Haaga has a new film out produced by Snowfort Pictures -- 68 Kill -- but he’s been in the gore and exploitation biz for a while now, with his earliest professional beginnings at Troma. Creative people often have a myriad of interests, and Haaga is no exception. He’s written several screenplays, most notably for Cheap Thrills (directed by Evan Katz, and also produced by Snowfort) and Deadgirl, but moonlights as an actor, too. Similarly, the cheerful Matthew Gubler is a popular actor, most known for his role on Criminal Minds, and he’s directed some episodes and a few shorts, as well. So, what happens when you mix the talents of Haaga, Gubler, Snowfort, AnnaLynne McCord, Alicia Boe, Shelia Vand,...

One of my favorite indie horror movies of the last five years is Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Resolution, a genre-bending effort that’s so confidently unique that it’s become a film I’ve recommended countless times to friends and family, whether they dig horror movies or not, and even programmed it as part of the film fest I used to run out here in Los Angeles, just because I wanted folks to have a chance to see it on a big screen (which doesn’t often happen for a lot of lower-budgeted genre fare).
A few years ago, their Lovecraftian love story Spring knocked my socks off, and I enjoyed their contribution to V/H/S: Viral as well, but nothing could have prepared me for my viewing experience while watching their latest movie, The Endless. About five minutes in, I got absolutely giddy once I realized...

Oh, 68 Kill features a psychotic AnnaLynne McCord seducing and shit-kicking her way through country-fried thrills? Why yes, this is exactly my kind of midnight carnage. Wait, it gets better? You bet! This dark comedy marks Trent Haaga’s directorial follow-up to Chop (also co-wrote Cheap Thrills/Deadgirl), and 68 Kill only furthers his catalog of gleeful nastiness. Femininity and masculinity clash in a bumbling Bonnie and Clyde reimagining, with a dash of Tarantino unpredictability. It’s a raucous closing-time nightcap that runs on perfume and blood-soaked booty shorts, because what man wouldn’t kill for Ms. McCord? Brilliant casting, Mr. Haaga. Novelist Bryan Smith should be proud of this adaptation.
Matthew Gray Gubler stars as Chip, the love-struck boyfriend of white-trash vixen Liza (AnnaLynne McCord). She’s the talk of the trailer park. Everyone wants her, but Chip is the lucky guy she goes home with – when not sexing landlords in lieu of late rent.

68 Kill is a straight whiskey flick with a whiskey chaser. Trent Haaga (writer, director) is not playing about when it comes to his characters. They’re wild, authentic, and painfully mean. For all intents, he’s made a female exploitation film but gender-swapped nearly all the characters. It’s a story about two victims of abuse trying to find their way in life. Well, trying to find their way to $68,000 and then, maybe, life. There’s a lot more than surface level violence for fun’s sake going on here. Since cancelling our cable subscription, at my house we are often at a loss for what to watch. We have every imaginable streaming service, but I feel like all of that variety makes it even harder to narrow down what we would like to watch. I’m often so bombarded with review copies of things that I seldom have a chance to watch what I “want” to watch in the first place, so wasting time choosing something on Netflix/Hulu/Hbogo/Amazon Instant is even more infuriating. Sometimes I wish somebody would just tell me what to watch. Please note that this is no kind of “Top” list. These movies are not ranked. This is just a list of 4 horror films currently on Netflix instant that I feel must be watched by fans of the genre. If you have any recommendations, please put them in the comments, or send me an email at Shawn@liberaldead.

It is that time again as 2014 is already half over. Wow, time flies when you are watching movies. The year being half over brings my annual, “Top 10 Movies of the Year…So Far” list, and without question this is my strongest list by a long shot. One big reason is the increase of great titles that have been released On Demand. Half of my list in fact is made up of films I saw On Demand. Now I am all for supporting your local Art House Theater as much as possible, but certain films don’t make it outside of La and New York so On Demand is a great tool to experience some great Independent movies. I feel like geek culture is far too obsessed with franchises that stick to the same format over and over again. I enjoy franchise movies as well, as you will see on this list,...

As soon as I saw "Cheap Thrills" at the 2013 SXSW film festival, I knew it was something special. It is a very simple logline, a very direct set-up, but the way it executes the idea is pitch-perfect and it never flinches from the grim path that it sets for itself. I've heaped praise on the direction by E.L. Katz and the script by Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo, but one of the things that really makes the film sing is the casting. Pat Healy is one of those guys you've seen in a thousand things even if you're not sure you've seen him in a thousand things, and in the last few years, he's finally started getting the roles where you'll remember him. He was so disturbing in "Compliance" as the guy on the phone who creates the situation, and in "The Innkeepers," he and Sara Paxton play a pair...

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And a lot of really gross stuff. This is the sly premise behind the smart -- and, yes, very gross -- thriller “Cheap Thrills,” which has dazzled Midnight festival crowds for the past year and hits theaters March 21.Directed by E.L. Katz from a script by David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga, the film’s premise is simple -- perfect, really, for intelligently executed low-budget fare. Craig (the great indie character actor Pat Healy) has just lost his car mechanic job, and an eviction notice stares him down from the door of his apartment. He has a wife and small baby. In other words, the future looks grim. He decides to drink away his sorrows at a local bar, where he accidentally reunites with an old high school friend, Vince (Ethan Embry), and together they meet a crass, rich couple, Colin and Violet (David Koechner...

On a dark and rainy day, I drove up the twisting Hollywood hills to visit the set of Utero, a new horror film produced by and starring Jessica Cameron, the queen of screams who dominated the festival circuit last year with a dementedly twisted game of truth or dare.
What I found when I got there was a passionate and energetic cast and crew fueled by energy drinks, energy shots, coffee, and energy bars. There was so much caffeine on set that it seemed to seep into the air so that I felt like I got a caffeine buzz just from breathing.
Of course, in reality my buzz didn't come from imaginary airborne caffeine, but from my close proximity to scream queen Jessica Cameron. Jessica was as beautiful as ever in her costume, a grey bathrobe covered in blood and green vomit. She has a...

Have you ever wondered just exactly what you’d be prepared to do in exchange for $100? How about $1000? Or $10,000? In his compulsively watchable debut, Cheap Thrills, director E.L Katz pushes this speculative game to the limit, submerging the film’s characters and its audience into ever-more squalid depths of humiliation, nastiness, and eventual horror. Uncomfortable to sit through, and yet impossible to turn away from, Katz’s stomach-churningly addictive film is an assured first feature, confirming the director’s place as a talent to watch out for in the future.

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

“The movie’s about a guy, who’s been in prison for 10 years, gets released, and over the next 24 hours kills every single person who had a hand in him going to jail,” movie producer and Snowfort Pictures founder Travis Stevens told EW earlier this year, talking about the new action-thriller American Muscle. “He’s just a shark moving straight forward — just chewing through everybody in front of him. l feel it’s my most personal film because it has everything that I love in the world: Naked tattooed chicks riding motorcycles with Uzis and a bad-ass guy who doesn’t really speak too much!

Cheap Thrills
Written by Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo
Directed by El Katz
USA, 2013
How much credit does rudimentary social commentary buy a film? You may find yourself pondering that question if you can distract yourself from the barrage of indignities that not only frequent but make up the constituent parts of the latter half of Cheap Thrills, a social satire by-way-of cruel lark that makes a case against the way capitalism ferrets out and rewards our worst impulses, and does so in the crudest, most straightforward fashion imaginable.
Craig (Pat Healy) is having a bad day. He’s just been laid off from his job as a car mechanic, his apartment is about to be seized due to non-payment, and he has a newborn baby to provide for. Depressed and looking only for a moment’s self-pity, he heads to a local watering hole, where he runs into an old friend,...

How crazy would you be prepared to get for $50? What about $500? What about a quarter of a million dollars? Such questions form the dramatic spine of the booze- and drugs-fueled black comedy Cheap Thrills, which is screening at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Anchorman star David Koechner and Sara Paxton play a rich couple who challenge a pair of much poorer new acquaintances — portrayed by Pat Healy and Can’t Hardly Wait actor Ethan Embry — to complete a series of ever more out-there challenges for increasing amounts of cheddar.

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...
