One of the best portrails of humanity in a long, long time
femalegenious5 February 2023
When my eyes weren't completely fogged over by me crying lika a baby, what I saw was one of the most heartfelt, honest and raw displays of humanity's need for companionship and purpose in ages.

Completely brilliant acting, and a very welcome build of characters so often overlooked in these dystopian shows.

Lovely, true to what life in a world like this would be in my opinion. Fear, loneliness, aggression and more fear - and then some brief moments of joy in small things- like a meal, a song, a painting- or indeed in the bigger things - such as a person.

Sure, I want more human vs fungi action for sure, but these sidesteps make the show stand out and much more memorable than others.

Well done.

An ode to a life of love.
contacttylerobwallispro30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show is staying true to the very essence of what made the game great. The whole story of The Last of Us revoles around love. It was and, I'm glad to say, still is a major component that drove gamers and viewers alike to invest themselves into the story.

Unlike the chapter in the game, it is light on corycept carnage. But in this case, that was the very best decision. This was one of the most moving pieces of television I have watched in a very, VERY long time. The characterisations of Bill and Frank have been given a different direction than they did in the game, and in doing so examined who they were, and what they meant to eachother.

I cannot stress this enough, please don't just watch this episode, allow yourself to feel it.

From a non-gamer ep. 3
GomezAddams66630 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I guess many can say, and will say this episode was a filler, but I beg to differ. This was in my opinion a way for the showrunners to tell is that series is not afraid to cut deep.

While this type of slower episode is not expected in an action-horror thriller, the message is written in neon lights: Save who you can save.

Nick Offerman's character has a great development, one that you are not expecting to see. I think this story has a great motif, and it has very great visuals to make its point. Like the story that Joel tells Ellie which is beautifully and shockingly served to the audience to not lose their sight in a quest where the infected are only one of the major dangers in this world, but not the only one.

I think episodes like this is what separates this series from other post-apocalyptic, dystopian zombie stories.

I would lie if I didn't say The Last of Us has trapped me.

Probably closer to 11/10 than to 1
rosanicspatrik6 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Whenever you see a lower overall score where the majority of the ratings is in the 8-10 range while there's a bunch of 1s, you probably know that the reality is that some people are offended - for whatever reason, that is. Even if you think of this piece of television hostory as a filler episode, there's no way it'd be 1/10, which would basically mean it's rubbish.

And this is anything but that. 'Long, Long Time' is by far the biggest surprise of the series so far - not being directed by one of the two showrunners was something I feared initially, but turned out to be better than the first two episodes in my opinion. The episode perfectly lives up to its title 'The Last of Us' and delivers something only few series out there are capable of. An ode to life, it was an honour to experience it and would love HBO to release the director's cut of this masterpiece.

Achingly beautiful
IHaveNoCommentToMake31 January 2023
Heterosexual man here not interested in pushing any agenda. I mention the foregoing fact only to highlight some of the oddly angry reviews about this episode. It was simply a beautiful heart wrenching love story. It made me think of my wife and what kind of world it would be without her in it. That's about it. I wasn't expecting this episode and honestly I usually hanker after more escapist fun, but this was so undeniably beautiful and so profoundly moving, I was lost in it. I'm not saying I want very episode to be like this. I loved the action, sets and world building of the last episode and I would say on balance I want more of this, but this episode really affected me. How can I not applaud it?

Got me into the show
sonyabrockman5 February 2023
Honestly had no interest in another apocalypse show, but seeing the buzz/outrage over this episode made me curious. I've not seen Offerman in anything since Ron Swanson, and I was absolutely floored by his performance. Finding the hope in a world of despair, love when you're not in the prime of your life...the strawberries. I can't remember the last time I got this emotionally invested in an episode of television, and adding in that these were completely new characters to me? It was poignant and perfect. A beautiful, touching story in its own right, and it made me want to continue watching the show.

How??!?!?! How could they make this?
suburp21212 March 2023
How the the producers of this show make such an episode?

The storyline is beautiful but tense, the characters interesting without being overbearing, and the general mood ( lighting, SFX, music, setting ) is brilliantly chosen.

Bit the main clincher for this being a perfect episode is that in the tiny amount alotted for each episode, it tells a self-contained story. This is so rare. Often, am episode tells a great story for the first 90% of its run time and then finally realised it must finish up and crams all necessary conclusions int the last 10% , thus leaving behind a bad taste in the viewer's mouth.

Not so here. Here, a well rounded, well chosen and certainly perfectly acted-upon story is told in an episode I didn't even know I had missed until I had watched it.

Highly recommended re-watchable material.

Well done.

Something special!

Warning: Spoilers
That is how i felt after watching this episode! Not that i had watched something jaw-dropping or mindblowing! Just that i had watched something special that i propably will remember for a long time!

This episode really showed the strengt of this series! Giving backstory to the side characters was an excellent idea! The story of Bill and Frank was very human and emotional! I will never forget that Piano-scene! Surprisingly moving!

The actors did a fantastic job of creating this unique relationship! I think I shed a tear multiple times! The formular of the show might not be new, but episodes like this, makes it feel fresh and unique!

Look forward to it!

One of the most beautiful, moving episodes I have ever watched on television show.
aufo-9128131 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am disappointed that some viewers think this episode did not 'advance the story'.

I haven't played the video game- and had no expectations when I began watching.

It was SO important-it reminded us that people survived-as in Bill's case, and people fell deeply in love- as when Bill met Frank.

Bill taught Frank how to survive-and just as importantly Frank taught Bill how to live.

It demonstrated the importance of enjoying a rich life -as well as staying alive.

It also showed that even if you avoid the 'spores'- something else will get you eventually.

Death comes to us all.

And dealing with it like Frank and Bill did was inevitable. So sad, yet so sweet- and ultimately uplifting.

It was perfect-and myself and hubby watched it in silence from the first time they played the piano- until the end. Tears running down our faces.

Both actors were superb- and this beautiful love story was amazing.

Waste of time
alexglimbergwindh31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Was it a beautiful episode? Sure. But I have zero interest in dedicating 1 hour to a love story between side characters when there is SO MUCH MORE to the story in the game. And of course I'm talking about the story affecting Joel and Ellie.

The episode was well done for what it was but doesn't fit the series. It killed momemtun and we didn't get to see cool action scenes. Dialogue between the characters interacting with Bill.

There's even a scene in this episode that caters to action, but it was so lazily done. Bill was unprepared and it was over in a minute with no stakes at all.

The only thing I feel is that they took an hour away from us when they could have built upon Joel, the action or the relationship with Joel, ellie and Bill.

Don't be fooled by the rating, this was storytelling executed beautifully
sugardattie31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Craig Mazin!! You did it again! This is what he does. Mythic Quest has a few episodes like this where you dont see the main cast much. But boy are all of them terrific. And heartbreaking. All have been tearjerkers. If you cant recognize good storytelling and remarkable execution, then i cant help you. To those that needed blood, guts, and guns every minute, chill. Relax. You'll get plenty of that im sure in the next episode. I was told this plot doesnt deviate too much from the video game. Just a little tweak to add a beautiful layer to one of the characters that is heavily featured in this episode.

Bill and Frank's story was too long
spmact31 January 2023
I don't mind that they included the side characters, but I just didn't find their story that compelling. It dragged on for too long and should have been about half the run time that it was originally given.

It felt like a lot of filler was put into it to pad the episode, and ultimately it didn't add much to the main story arc. Sure it was interesting to see the humanity in their story during the apocalypse, but it was too self contained and felt like it was from a different show.

I liked the Bill character more than the Frank one, and I would have liked more interaction between him and the main characters.

The series spent much of the first two episodes introducing two main characters that I want to see the story of, but then gives me two other characters who don't have that much of an effect on the main characters - and whatever effect they do have could have again, been done in half the run time.

This episode isn't needed. Skip it and watch later as a single spinoff episode. Nothing to do with the story.
jsdoxey27 March 2023
Two episodes of action and story to suck me in and then they randomly throw this episode in?!

With only one short season, why waste an entire episode on a side story that has nothing to do with the previous episodes?!

You could cut this episode out and it wouldn't effect the rest the show one bit. That's the definition of providing zero value to the story. This would have been a solid spin off episode between season one and two. Something to keep viewers engaged between seasons.

Remove this from the season and the overall rating would be much higher. I appreciate the attempt at humanity but it's so disconnected from the storyline it actually hurts the flow of the snow.

Someone just give Nick Offerman the Emmy Now
jason_esch31 January 2023
Just give Offerman the Emmy. Yes, slightly different from the game sure. But, it's expected it would differ from the game. What a great performance. Moving, performance. There's a reason the game is one of the most awarded of all-time, and it's not because of fancy graphics. The story is phenomenal, and they're carrying it tremendously to the TV adaptation.

My one slight gripe is the game had Joel was a bit more angry then in the series. He was much more angry over the events that happened in the past, and took it out on Elle a lot more. But, that's just a minor thing to note. The episode otherwise is brilliant, and I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Ow my heart.
squallsrapture30 January 2023
Just wow. Each episode goes one step further in intensity, drama, and expanding on the game universe. I truly enjoy they give more backstory to characters and events without straying too far from teb source material.

This show consistently pulls no punches, and shows a deeply intimate view of an apocalypse. In ways shows like walking dead couldn't quite touch. They gave bill so many more dimensions than just survivalist curmudgeon. The absolute heartbreak.

I can't wait to see where this show continues to go. Though I don't think they'll get to the end of the game by the end of this season. And I am a-ok with stretching it out.

Beautiful tale even if you're not gay
will934212 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a 66 year old hetero-sexual male and, probably on par for my age group, have absolutely no interest in modern age guy subjects. I've just watched the first three episodes of this series and this was very different from the first two. Usually I'd just ignore the gay scenes in a movie or series, but this was very different. I was very moved by their story. How they met and developed was beautifully acted out by the two characters. I was truly moved by their story. As for the first three episodes of the series, well I have to admit that even if I have no knowledge of the video game, this is, for me, one of the best series I have watched since LOST. I hope the rest is as good.

Wow! A moving elegy on life, love and family.
dfloro10 February 2023
First let me say: I know nothing about the video game the series is based upon, nor very much about video games in general. But I do know art when I see it. I have since been informed that the character in the video game of "Bill," here portrayed brilliantly in this episode by Nick Offerman ("Parks & Rec"), is a survivalist just as he is in this show, but herein we get a glimpse at somebody's longing for family (the love that he still feels for his mother, who performed Linda Ronstadt's "Long, Long Time" for him as a child), and for a sense of meaningful connection to one another. Basically, those priceless things are the entire reason that human beings can and do go to such extraordinary lengths to survive, as they do here over a supposed interval of 20+ years. Because this tale of Bill's life is only tangentially connected to the story of Joel and Ellie's trek, this serves as a sort of "stand-alone" bonus. And it's "bonus content" that should *not* be missed!

Best filler episode i have ever seen in my life
Giannis25042 February 2023
It was a natural consequence that a simple deviation of the series to the game will make the hardcore fans of the game mad..Cause they're too biased to see the general image of the series..And that is that if they go EXACTLY like the game, they will fail..Its very beautiful from the producers that they are balancing the games story with new variants that are great extras that dont exclude from the general image of the game.. Anyways, back to the episode,if you rate below 9/10 you either homophobic or biased..This episode gives you the same result of the games story, with a storytelling and performances worth for an Emmy..Nick Offerman with the performance of his life alongside Murray Bartlett providing a great chemistry with Nick and the result is a perfect moving, emotionally episode..I really expect Nick Offerman to be a candidate for an Emmy award for his performance on this episode..

So in conclusion i can understand why some people are frustrated about the outcome of this episode but you cant denie that this is one of the best filler episodes ever existed.

a straight european white man opinion
paulofino2 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a straight white european man i enjoyed this episode a lot. I dont understand how people might be so insecure about their sexuality that they hate on an episode just because the 2 people involved in a beautiful and superbly acted love story do not fit their vision of a couple.

And to those saying that it's too different from the game, not a single tv series or movie that is based on a game follows it to the letter, it is not possible, it would be a boring story with the same actor/actress on screen all the time

Enjoy the show, get comfortable with your sexuality and look at to why you hated 2 men kissing... says way more about whats wrong with you than it does about the show

Have a nice life.

I'm just here to explain...
Novelist_1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just here to explain... why this episode could be disappointing for some of us, without any bigotry. Because I don't have an ounce of it. And the people that do, I feel their opinions are heavily and negatively skewed. The truth is I loved seeing the story of Bill and Frank. I just *knew* it was leading up to learning why Bill is so angry in present day. Preparing myself emotionally to see them fall in love, see that love slowly dissolve into hate, and then being ripped apart when I saw Frank hanging... Bill dying in the end, throwing away all of those moments that are so special to the game, to the character dynamics, only to get a letter and truck they are probably going to lose 20 minutes into the next episode... I've seen so many game adaptations fail because they took too many creative liberties instead of just honoring the game. The Last of Us is so beloved *because* of the story. They did it right the first time. The last of us is gut wrenching, it's not about finding the positivity at the beginning of your journey, it's about finding it after you've hit absolute rock bottom. The ending made the entire episode nothing but beautiful filler. When we've only got 9 chances to expand the story. Nothing we got from the episode, while amazing storytelling, offered anything to the plot. To The Last of Us. The fact we'll never get the school, Joel upside down in the trap, Bill and Ellie bickering, or the magazine... It just sucks.

I cried..,
ladyliliroche2 February 2023
Definitely a heart breaking episode.

As someone who played the game, I thought I knew what was going to happen but this episode just surprised me and left me in tears (in a good way).

We all know Bill was gay in the game. Sure you can argue it is all implies but it was definitely the intention and the truth.

Nick Offerman shines in this episode. He did not only emit Ron Swanson vibe in the beginning (that everyone loves) but also shows some vulnerability. Of course the actor that played Frank was beautiful as well. They both complements each other and has such chemistry.

Bad days but also good days, I'm happy that both has their own happy ending and not some tragic romance. The strawberry scene and the end scene, it broke me so much.

And how everything went to mimic Joel and Ellie's story. They are building up to the climax so well.

Well made but
christen_hole30 January 2023
The episode is well made and good television where we explore the relationship between two people living isolated lives during the "apocalypse". But I can't help but feel that giving 60 minutes of screen time to characters who never interact with one of our main characters is unnecessary, their relationship although well written and captivating does not affect the main plot of this show whatso ever. For anyone watching the show for the main story between the main characters I would recommend watching the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes. You will get just as much out of that as watching the entire episode.

An unneccesary side-story
danieljlapoint3 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is simply out of place. From a story telling standpoint it doesn't make any sense. In episode three, we spend an entire hour with a side character survivor and his falling in love with another survivor only for them to both die by the episodes end. There is no lasting impact for this story or for other characters.

In a well written story, there should never be an entire episodes worth of content that can be wholly skipped without missing a beat. This episode could have been trimmed from 75 minutes down to 15 minutes and you would have never noticed the difference in story for our titular characters.

This also does make those who made the game upset, as one of these survivor characters was not supposed to be dead. I don't know how many times it needs to be said for adaptations, but -Stick to the source material-.

Still rating it a five because it was well filmed, acted and produced.

Excellent Writing
mphocastry31 January 2023
This was the best episode for me thus far, the build up to it was awesome. The two new characters were so captivating and so likeable with so much at stake for both of them. They were both grounded in the reality of the world that they exist in. The introduction of their story from beginning to end was unpredictable and full of mystery, but it had a fantastic pay-off. The performances were just spectacular and this episode was such a well crafted deviation from an otherwise dark and completely broken down world. I am so glad that even though there are a lot of trolls reviewing movies on IMDB, the consensus will always favour technical and creative excellence. If this is going to be the level of writing and directing, I am looking forward to more.

Amazing television
adamoz-9468730 January 2023
This episode is great. Moving and full of depth. Terrific writing, performances, everything. I wouldn't be surprised if Offerman or even Bartlett get some awards for their acting.

I was completely sidelined by the emotions I felt watching. I thought the show was good so far, but wow, their dedication to character really shows here. I don't know if it'll reach this kind of a peak again during this season, but regardless, this episode is an essential watch. The deviations they make from the video game transcend the source material by a lot. The writers and creators put in great work and it shows. What an episode. A prime example of how beautiful television can be.
