Has there been a greater bait-and-switch in recent memory than "Magic Mike"? The trailers for director Steven Soderbergh's 2012 dramedy -- itself loosely based on star Channing Tatum's real-life experiences as an "exotic dancer" -- promised to deliver a whole lot of male stripper shenanigans for a fun Friday night of frivolity. The actual film, on the other hand, was a far more sobering look at not just the reality of what life is like as a professional stripper but also the economic hardships faced by working-class individuals like Tatum's Michael "Magic Mike" Lane in the wake of the 2007 financial crisis. In his defense, Soderbergh likened the film to a Robert Altman joint ahead of its release, so you can't exactly accuse him personally of trojan-horsing anyone.
The second "Magic Mike" film, "Magic Mike Xxl," hewed closer to what audiences expected from the first movie. Helmed by Soderbergh's longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs,...

Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director behind Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and the Ocean’s trilogy, says artificial intelligence is a “serious issue.” But the availability of streaming data — or lack thereof — has him more concerned. “Data transparency is the one that keeps me up at night,” the director told Defector in a new interview. For example, Soderbergh said that he never saw data while working with Max, which released his films Let Them All Talk and Kimi, his reality competition Finding Magic Mike, and his new limited series Full Circle. “I was given adjectives,” he said. “‘We feel good about these numbers.’ ‘The comps are right in line with what we were hoping for.’” Claudette Barius/Warner Bros./Courtesy: Everett Collection The filmmaker has two theories about why streaming platforms withhold the numbers. “One is that they’re all making a lot more money than anybody knows and that they’re willing to tell us,...

Exclusive: There’s a change at the top of Eureka Productions, the company behind unscripted series such as Fox’s Farmer Wants a Wife and Netflix’s The Mole.
Eden Gaha, who joined the company in May 2022, is leaving the business to “return to his roots” in independent production.
It comes as the former Endemol Shine unscripted chief helped the Fremantle-backed company launch seven original series including recent Fox order The Floor.
Gaha said he wanted to return to being a creator and showrunner, a role he was in before he joined the Chris Culvenor- and Paul Franklin-founded firm. He previously served as showrunner on Frogger, Eureka’s series based on the classic video game, for Peacock.
In addition to The Mole, which launched on Netflix in October, Farmer Wants a Wife, which was renewed for a second season in May, and The Floor, which is based...

“Insecure” is now officially available to stream on Netflix, the first HBO original to launch on the streamer under a new licensing deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
It was first reported on June 20 that Wbd was in talks to license some of their original shows to Netflix. In addition, the streamer has confirmed that “Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific,” “Six Feet Under,” and “Ballers” will be coming to the service at a later date. “True Blood,” which also currently streams on Hulu, will be available to Netflix subscribers outside the U.S. All of the shows remain available to stream on Max (formerly HBO Max) as well.
The deal marks the latest shift in content strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery under the David Zaslav regime. In January, Warner Bros. Discovery made licensing moves by partnering with Roku and Tubi to launch free, ad-supported channels with HBO shows. The Fast channels...

In a turnaround for the streaming wars, Warner Bros. Discovery is in negotiations to license a package of library HBO titles to Netflix.
If a deal were to go through, it would cement the sea-change in content distribution strategy afoot at Warner Bros. Discovery under the David Zaslav regime. HBO has licensed library content in the past — a deal with Netflix would not be groundbreaking per se, but it is notable in the era of pitched competition among the largest media companies to build direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Netflix, the upstart outsider from Los Gatos, has been the pace car for television’s transition over the past decade.
Among the titles under discussion are the Issa Rae comedy “Insecure.” The show premiered on HBO in 2016 and ran for five seasons until 2021. The deal is believed to be non-exclusive to Netflix, meaning that the titles would still be available on Max, Warner Bros.

Though Max is “The One to Watch” for HBO content, the HBO Max-replacement app’s TV library is actually comprised of more Discovery+ shows, according to new data.
Research from streaming-app aggregator Reelgood, shared with IndieWire, states Max’s compilation of 1,208 different series is comprised 55 percent by Discovery+ shows. Forty-two percent of Max series migrated from HBO Max; the remaining 3 percent are new Max exclusives.
Max is a combination of HBO Max and most of the content on Discovery+. (Discovery+ is still available as a standalone app; the ad-free version costs $6.99 per month to Max’s $15.99 per month.)
Episode counts follow a similar pattern. As of May 23, the old HBO Max had 22,191 individual episodes of TV, according to Reelgood. As of May 25, Max has 51,575 episodes. Discovery+ has 59,048 TV episodes.
Of course, not all episodes of television are created equally. It’s a bit simpler to compile stacks of “Chopped” or...

As 2022 rolled along, there was increasing angst from both media members and content creators regarding the tactics that Warner Bros. Discovery used to cut costs, especially in its streaming segment. One of the most controversial moves came when Wbd canceled a nearly-complete “Batgirl” film, preferring a $90 million tax write-down to releasing the movie direct to streaming, as had been intended.
The cuts didn’t stop there, however. Wbd canceled several still-filming series, and licensed the rights to some of those shows to other streamers. The company’s tactics rankled creatives and producers who worked with Wbd, but from a financial standpoint, it has been a successful strategy. Wbd pulled out of its financial nosedive and actually saw its streaming segment post a modest profit of $50 million last quarter.
That’s likely a big reason that Disney seems to be following the Wbd playbook to the letter, nowadays. During its conference...

Andrea Scrosati, who is group COO and continental Europe CEO of Fremantle, isn’t too worried about various types of turbulence that are currently creating anxiety in the U.S. media market such as draconian cost cuts being made by juggernaut groups and the impending prospect of a Writers Guild of America strike.
Speaking in Italy at a film and TV conference organized by the Idm-Film Commission Südtirol titled “Less is More – What to Do When the Streaming Boom is Over” Scrosati noted that the effect of market consolidation in the U.S. and fear due to plunging stock market results that is prompting cost cuts at Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery certainly means that “some of the big buyers are in a conflict.”
Which, in turn, “makes it more complicated sometimes to have discussions.”
But, he said, “The amount of content that is required by consumers across the world is not going to change.

Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to keep Discovery+ as a standalone streaming offering and to proceed with launching the yet-to-be-named combined product of Discovery+ and HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.

Near the end of 2015’s Magic Mike Xxl, before putting on their sexiest show, our beloved troupe of strippers (or male entertainers, as they prefer to be called) hear the ecstatic cheers of the crowd on the other side of the curtain. “They’re doing a fucking Twilight routine and they’re mopping it up,” Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello) says, exasperated by the preceding group’s PG-13 gyrations and graceless body rolls. Warner Bros Discovery has finally nailed down plans to go the Fast route. Last year — in between an intense bout of cancellations and titles being pulled from their streaming home on HBO Max — the company announced plans to explore a free ad-supported television option (Fast). During the company's third-quarter earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav made a point of saying that there's "a huge amount of content that's not even on [HBO Max/Discovery+] that's sitting with us that hasn't been put to monetize in the marketplace." In the spirit of cashing in, a new plan has been enacted. Over the next few months, 14 Warner Bros. branded Fast channels will arrive on Roku and Tubi.

Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that they would be licensing bundles of their shows to “third-party free, ad-supported streaming services”… and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the details of a couple of those licensing deals. While Warner Bros. Discovery has been making the news a lot in recent months as they remove titles from their own HBO Max streaming service, content from the company is now set to reach both Tubi and Roku.
The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Tubi will add more than 225 free channels from Wbd and 14 WB-branded Fast channels, including the launch of three brand-specific channels, WB TV Reality, WB TV Series and WB TV Family, to feature some of Wbd’s popular content, including all seasons of Westworld, Raised by Wolves, Legendary, FBoy Island, The Nevers, Finding Magic Mike, Head of the Class and The Time Traveler’s Wife.” Warner Bros. Discovery titles will start showing up on Tubi in February.

Roku and Tubi will be the free streaming homes for Westworld, Raised by Wolves, The Nevers and other Warner Bros. Discovery content that was recently removed from HBO Max, as part of a co-exclusive deal that includes “hundreds” of TV series and movies from the Wbd portfolio.
As reported in December, Wbd’s plan was to shop the series it had removed from its own subscription streaming service (as part of an expansive and seismic cost-cutting move) and shop them to Fast (free, ad-supported streaming TV) services.

HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys sent a memo to employees this afternoon, explaining the decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to layoff 70 employees, or 14 of his workforce, as the company restructures. The move, announced the morning, comes as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one streamer — with the decision made to reduce redundancies in unscripted programming. But a changing business model also led to cuts in scripted children’s and family fare, casting, international and acquisitions.
“Unfortunately, the environment in which we operate is changing rapidly, and it is up to us to continue to refine our model to chart a course for long term success,” he wrote in the memo. “As you heard from David Zaslav during our last earnings call, producing top-tier HBO/Max scripted content is crucial to Wbd’s future. Part of this process involves an honest assessment of what we need moving forward.

In the memo (read it in full below), Bloys lays out the responsibilities for his top executives on the scripted and documentary side who are staying on and also highlights the accomplishments of the top executives who are leaving as a result of the layoffs: Jennifer O’Connell, Jennifer Kim; Michael Quigley and Linda Lowy.

With five nods, “Abbott Elementary” was the most-nominated series at this year’s Television Critics Awards. The hit comedy is going home with four wins, including the top prize: program of the year.
This makes “Abbott” not only the TCA’s biggest winner this year, but the only series to receive more than one award. Fremantle will also run studio efforts and execute physical productions as well as handle international distribution for all projects launched.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In early 2021, the company established Awa Studios, its Film and TV division, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president, who will oversee the partnership with Fremantle.

When the entertainment industry hit pause in 2020, Georgia’s only television festival was forced to make the same change that so many did, readjusting its annual Scad TVfest into a virtual event. Not only did that event go on without a hitch, it became a tremendous success, and made the team realize that it was a trend they want to continue after the pandemic ends.
“After presenting TVfest virtually for the first time, we were amazed with the reach, interest and attendance on a global scale,” says Christina Routhier, executive director of Scad Theaters and Festivals. “The format allowed for industry leaders, prospective students, even our special guests and honorees to participate from locations all over the world. Channing Tatum loves a good costume. Just watch “Magic Mike” or “G.I. Joe” (or his Instagram account). In “The Lost City,” he adds to his ever-expanding look book with Dash — a model who graces the cover of a series of romance novels by a bestselling author (Sandra Bullock), the victim of a kidnapping scheme. In the upcoming Paramount Pictures comedy, Tatum dons an unbuttoned white linen shirt and acid-washed jeans as he shows off his golden locks.
Tatum, 41, wanted the hairpiece to pay homage to a range of iconic hunks. “I definitely have a Fabio wig,” he says over breakfast one morning at a restaurant near his home in Los Angeles. “But my inspiration was the man himself that’s in our movie, Brad — from ‘Legends of the Fall.’” Yes, Brad (as in Pitt) makes a cameo in “The Lost City,” which opens in theaters on March 25. “I was like,...

HBO Max is continuing a steady roll-out in Europe with its second wave of countries.
The WarnerMedia-owned streaming service is launching in an additional 15 nations on March 8, this time targeting Central and Eastern Europe. This covers Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Christina Sulebakk, general manager for HBO Max Emea, says it has been a “cautious choice” to get the markets launched in Europe, where the HBO Max roll-out began in earnest in October with launches in the Nordics as well as Spain and Andorra.
Those countries were obvious choices as the company had solid streaming customer bases that were already familiar with HBO Nordic and HBO España VOD services. “[We had to] make sure we could migrate over that customer base and get them on HBO Max first,” says Sulebakk.

HBO Max will be the exclusive home to the sequel of a successful Warner Bros. property.
According to Deadline, the Magic Mike franchise is getting a third chapter, with Channing Tatum set to return for Magic Mike's Last Dance.
Tatum played Mike Lane in the first two movies, and given the title of the new flick, it sounds like the movie will conclude the franchise.
Then again, it could lead to a TV show or spinoff movies on the streaming service.
In fact, an unscripted series titled Finding Magic Mike is set to bow on the streamer on December 16.
Streaming services have been reaching into the back catalogs of the media conglomerates that own them in an effort to drive subscriber numbers.
Steven Soderbergh and writer Reid Carolin are also set to return for the next chapter.
The first two films amassed nearly $300 million worldwide, so there is a desire for the movies.

Gregory Jacobs, who directed 2015’s “Magic Mike Xxl” after Soderbergh helmed the 2012 original, will return to produce the film along with Carolin ,Nick Wechsler, and Peter Kiernan.
Altogether, the first films have grossed almost $300 million worldwide, and have spawned a successful stage show known as “Magic Mike Live,” which started in Vegas before traveling abroad. A multiyear North American tour has been set,...
