The well-connected BEE company that took over mines - once part of Pamodzi Gold - which went bankrupt last year, Aurora Empowerment Systems has among its directors Nelson Mandela's grandson and Jacob Zuma's nephew. However, being part of South Africa's political hierarchy doesn't necessarily make for good management or good investment. Carte Blanche visited the Grootvlei Mine on the East Rand and did some digging.

Things are going from bad to worse at Grootvlei mine on the East Rand, where workers haven't been paid for months, despite an announcement by the owners, Aurora Empowerment Systems, of a new funding source. Equally worrying is the vast quantity of contaminated water that has been streaming out of the mine, despite assurances that it is being treated. Carte Blanche investigates.
