Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty has two small yet important facets in common with Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. Both films begin with a profound quote that provides a key to the viewer for a full understanding of the film that follows. Both films use the music of “Dies Irae” (Requiem for my Friend, which includes Lacrimosa 2) by Zbigniew Preisner (the talented composer of Kieslowski’s Dekalog and The Three Colors trilogy) and Henryk Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony.
Just as Mallick used an interesting quote from the Book of Job, the opening quote for The Great Beauty is from Sorrentino’s favorite author Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s Journey to the End of the Night.

Missed out on this year's Frigid New York Festival? You still have a chance to catch a selection of shows with Frigid Hangover. Frigid New York is the fastest growing celebration of fringe theater in the Lower East Side. Now in its fourth year, the wintertime festival featured 30 edgy productions that are selected in part as first-come, first-serve, and in part by lottery. All shows run less than sixty minutes. One hundred percent of the box office goes to the participating company. The festival this year ran from February 24th to March 7th, 2010 in three East Village venues: The Kraine Theater, The Red Room, and Under St. Marks. A selection of the top shows have been chosen to participate in Frigid Hangover, which offers theater mavens one last chance to catch these shows. Hangover runs from March 9 to 13, 2010. The European Film Academy has unveiled its complete list of nominees for the International Short Film Festival in Drama, with Valery Rosier's "Bonne Nuit (Good Night)" making the final selection.
The Belgium/France was selected by the festival's international jury, which includes Manuela Cernat (Romania), Nancy Bishop (USA), Jacques Mitch (France), Gerald Weber (Austria), and Vassilis Mazomenos (Greece).
It joins other previously announced shortlisted films for the award. The 2,000 members of the Efa will now vote for the winner, which will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on December 12 at the Rurh Metropolis in Germany.
