In episode 11 of "Ted Lasso"'s third season, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is surprised by a special house guest: his mom, Dottie Lasso. She appears totally unannounced in London and shadows her son throughout his day working at AFC Richmond. Eventually, the pair work out some of their long-standing issues, especially those around Ted's dad's death.
If you're an avid TV watcher, you might wonder where you recognize the actor who plays Ted's mom - Becky Ann Baker - from. The answer is a lot of places, since Becky Ann is an extremely prolific character actor. Two of her biggest roles were as Jean Weir on NBC's short-lived (but extremely beloved) teen comedy "Freaks and Geeks" and as Loreen Horvath - the mom to Lena Dunham's Hannah - on HBO's "Girls." “There have been many discussions over the years. We all loved the experience,” Holmes said. “There’s a protection that comes along with the discussion. The show was a time capsule. To put it into today’s world might tarnish it a little bit. It was right before everyone had a phone and social media and all of that, so there was an innocence that was there between the characters that was one of the things I think people liked about the show. Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.
“If he sent me something, he would say, ‘Do you like it? Alright we’ll get him next time, kiddo, no pressure,’” Luke says. “This was the only script that he said, ‘You need to do this. And I’m like, ‘No. Absolutely not. First of all, Marvel, like, what is that?’”
Limato was firm, so Luke took a meeting with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Upon entering his office, Luke’s eyes were drawn to a section of the wall full of Black characters, ones he didn’t even know existed. Luke leaned in and took the role.

How did Katie Holmes pass the time at home during the pandemic? By rewatching "Dawson's Creek" with daughter Suri Cruise, apparently. During a recent interview with Variety, Holmes shared rare insight into her relationship with 16-year-old Suri, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise. "She has seen 'Dawson's Creek,'" the actor confirmed to the outlet. "I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager. I'm not like, 'You need to watch mommy's work.' But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it." We have so many follow-up questions to this revelation: How long did it take them to binge all six seasons? Is Suri Team Pacey or Team Dawson?
Holmes added, "It's wild to have a daughter who's almost the same age as I was when I began all this." The star was 18 years old when she first graced our screens as Joey Potter and...

"The skill I most require in this job - is being able to tell a story." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Rare Objects, the latest film directed by actress Katie Holmes (she also directed the pandemic film Alone Together out last year). This will be available to watch on VOD starting in April. An adaptation of Kathleen Tessaro's novel, Rare Objects is a story about friendship that centers around a young woman who reclaims her own sense of self through her journey of self discovery that involves a new job, new friends and healing. Starring Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke, Alan Cumming, David Alexander Flinn, and Katie Holmes (who's also currently in Anna Ziegler's new play The Wanderers). This hasn't played at any film festivals, which is a bad sign, because it looks rather tedious despite the good intentions behind telling this story of friends. Is it uplifting or depressing?...

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Chris Naoki Lee’s feature directorial debut, Dinner Party, in which he stars alongside Kara Wang (Top Gun: Maverick), Imani Hakim (Mythic Quest) and Kausar Mohammed (The Flash). The global indie distributor has slated the pic for a day-and-date release on August 19.
Inspired by Lee’s own experiences growing up in a diverse community outside of Los Angeles, the indie ensemble drama follows Izzy (Hakim) and boyfriend Cal (Lee) as they go to a casual reunion dinner party amongst Cal’s childhood friends 10 years after high school. The friends navigate socially sensitive topics, though some fall on deaf ears when it comes to the hyper-masculine Miles (Charles Hittinger). It doesn’t take long for Izzy to notice that Shannon (Wang), co-host and childhood friend to the boys, seems uncomfortable around Miles, as the film simmers into a slow burn that erupts in the final act.

Photo: ‘Alone Together' The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic is a time generally remembered for not just it's forcing a full lockdown of the entire nation, but the fear of what a global virus meant for the future of the world. The sense of being stuck with your family or loved one for a prolonged period of time seemed accomplishable at first but could quickly turn into resentment for one another. It was a feeling of hopelessness in a time when hope was desperately needed. Directing, producing, and starring in your own film is a feat that is commemorable in its own right, especially as your first feature-length directorial project. Katie Holmes, however, took on the challenge to bring to life her story, ‘Alone Together.’ ‘Alone Together’ (2022) is a romance drama film about two strangers, June (Katie Holmes), who is a food critic trying to write a novel, and Charlie (Jim Sturgess), a mechanic on older vehicles.

Suri Cruise is stepping into the spotlight. In a July 26 interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Katie Holmes revealed her daughter, Suri, whom she shares with Tom Cruise, sings in the actor's new film, "Alone Together."
"I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her," Holmes said, sharing that Suri sings a cover of "Blue Moon" that appears in the opening credits of "Alone Together," a movie about two strangers forced to live together during the first weeks of Covid-19 lockdowns. Holmes wrote, directed, and stars in the film. "Blue Moon," originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, was famously covered by Diane Keaton in the 2014 movie "And So It Goes," and Holmes added that Suri has a connection to the song because Keaton "met my daughter when she was a year old." It also doesn't hurt that Holmes has long been a fan of the "Baby Boom" actor.

The Dawson's Creek alum revealed that she recruited the 16-year-old to sing a cover of "Blue Moon" in the opening credits of Alone Together, a Covid-19 pandemic-inspired romantic comedy she wrote, directed and stars in. Explaining her decision to include Suri—who she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise—in the project, Katie told Yahoo! Entertainment, "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her." "She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing," she continued. "That's the way I direct in...

“Alone Together” was originally reviewed out of the 2022 Tribeca Festival.
Katie Holmes turns out to be one of the best chroniclers of the Covid-19 lockdown to date: Her sophomore feature as a director, “Alone Together” (which she also wrote), captures many vivid details on the subject overlooked by even documentaries.
But Holmes’ artistic ambitions aren’t lofty, as she seems to have set her sights on Lifetime movie rather than Oscar bait.
The opening scenes are stunning. On March 15, 2020, as news alerts flood the airwaves, June (Holmes) ventures outside her building, on her way to an Airbnb upstate booked by her boyfriend, John (Derek Luke), to wait out the pandemic. She’s been told by her employer it should all blow over in two weeks. (Ha!)

Laure Calamy, who plays Noémie, the wacky assistant to Mathias Barneville in Call My Agent!, won the César (French equivalent of the Oscars) for Best Actress for My Donkey, My Lover & I, the film by Caroline Vignal that opens this weekend Stateside from Greenwich Entertainment. It’s the distributor’s second narrative film in a year and its widest release since The Rescue.
Wide here means 52 screens in 28 markets in the U.S. where the specialty box office can still be pretty punishing, especially for foreign language fare. Greenwich has been releasing about two film a month, mostly documentaries. My Donkey (Antionette Dans Les Cévennes in French) is Calamy’s first starring film role. Who’s going to make the first truly great Covid movie? A number of filmmakers have thrown their hats in the ring since the pandemic began in earnest two and a half years ago, but so far the documentaries have outpaced every drama not named “Kimi.” Katie Holmes’ sophomore directorial effort does little to change that.
“Alone Together” — which Holmes also wrote, produced and stars in — takes place in the early days of lockdown, when uncertainty was rising as rapidly as case counts. Holmes stars as June, a New York food critic who flees the city thinking that her boyfriend (Derek Luke) will be joining her Upstate; when his family situation prevents that, she and another man (Jim Sturgess) find themselves alone … together.

Love can blossom in the most unexpected of times. That's a theme Katie Holmes explores in her new movie Alone Together, which premiered July 22. When developing the rom-com set during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the actress exclusively told E! News' Daily Pop that she was inspired by people's pandemic love stories…good and the bad. "The inspiration behind the film really came from a lot of the stories that I read about—all of these different stories on Reddit and this and that," she told Daily Pop's Francesca Amiker on July 22. "It was really either people falling in love quickly or people, unfortunately, breaking up, ending their marriages." With the...

People died, businesses closed, and health and science became politicized to a point of no return. But what about the good that Covid accomplished? What about those relationships that needed a global pandemic to provide the next logical progression of conflict resolution on the extensive list John (Derek Luke) and June (Katie Holmes) have to describe all they’ve overcome—definitive proof their one-year love is real and worth saving? Trials (he’s apparently a lawyer), holidays, regular days, and… health crisis? If your union can survive Covid it can survive anything. And, likewise, if it can’t survive Covid, why were you dating in the first place? Luckily for June, those million-plus Americans’ deaths meant something. They sacrificed themselves so she could see the truth: John’s a self-righteous dick.

In an era where the very genre of romantic comedies is at stake, “Alone Together” arrives just in time to fuel a nostalgic formula for the trope of early aughts enemies who become lovers.
Katie Holmes writes, directs, produces, and stars in the quaint rom-com set in 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Holmes plays restaurant critic June who leaves Manhattan after being on hiatus with her boyfriend John (Derek Luke). She retreats to an upstate Airbnb, which is inconveniently double-booked by Charlie, yet another lonely heart, played by Jim Sturgess. Yet a love triangle quickly ensues as John visits the rental and tries to make his fraught relationship survive the quarantine lockdown.
“Alone Together” premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, and also co-stars “Girls” alums Becky Ann Baker and Zosia Mamet, plus Melissa Leo. The film debuts July 22 from Vertical Entertainment.
“Alone Together” marks Holmes’ sophomore directorial project following the 2016 drama “All We Had.

"Do I really want to be with somebody who doesn't want to be with me during a pandemic?" Vertical has revealed the main official trailer for Alone Together, the second feature film directed by actress Katie Holmes. This recently premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival this summer, and will be out to watch this July on VOD and in theaters. Another pandemic Covid-19 lockdown film, with a twist. Two strangers embroiled in bad relationships wind up in the same upstate New York rental home and end up connecting together. Katie Holmes stars as one stranger, and Jim Sturgess as the other - both end up staying there until Holmes' boyfriend John shows up. Derek Luke also co-stars, plus Zosia Mamet and Melissa Leo. This is a better trailer than the teaser, but it still looks like the kind of film everyone is going to ignore. No one wants to revisit pandemic lockdown time right now,...

Katie Holmes, best known for her star turns and supporting roles in “Batman Begins” and “Wonder Boys,” has, in recent years, spent more time behind the camera. In 2016, Holmes made her feature directorial debut with the mother-daughter drama “All We Had,” and during the pandemic she has directed two features, “Alone Together” and “Rare Objects.” The former film, a love story set during lockdown, recently had its world premiere at Tribeca.
“I’m trying to make artistic movies that are relevant to today’s world and that speak to something deep within all of us,” says Holmes on the eve of “Alone Together’s” premiere.
As she seeks out more opportunities to put her artistic stamp on projects, Holmes has allied herself with a team of indie film vets, Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman and Jesse Korman of Yale Entertainment, who produced the likes of Mayim Bialik’s “As They Made Us...
