Did the Cops Really Say "Over the Top?"
curtamparo9 March 2022
I had never heard about this story before this show. My comment is based on the assumption that the depiction of the cops on the scene is accurate. They thought Russell's 911 call was "over the top??" I thought he was unbelievably controlled. If my husband came home and found me dead in any manner, particularly violent and bloody but even simply natural causes, he would be so beyond hysterical that the 911 operator would not be able to understand anything he was saying. How can you love your spouse and not be legitimately "over the top" If you come home and find them not only dead but brutally killed or self-inflicted? Maybe they didn't love their wives all that much.

Slow

An interesting docudrama that moved at a snails pace. Doesn't seem like there's enough to go on for a full series so they add a lot of filler. Characters are well cast and acted.

Strong Start

Not normally a fan of true story drama or heavy narration. I must admit to having a crush on Zellweger when I was younger (which is why I watched). I did very much enjoy this - sets up the story well and introduces the characters. The level of narration is acceptable despite my prejudice and I am very much looking forward to the next episode.

This REALLY happened

Warning: Spoilers
Listen to the Podcast & do your Googling. Talk to anyone in the area during that time. The cops/prosecution were really that bad. Sad but true. "Over the top" was said. Thank God the truth came out...eventually.

Surprisingly Good

A movie re-enactment of a Dateline episode/podcast doesn't sound very interesting (just watch the episode or listen to the podcast, right?) but Renee Zellwegger is just so perfect in it that I can't look away. What a get for Hulu & NBC. I'm hooked but man, I wish it wasn't a once-a-week thing. It'd be great to binge it.

Laying the Foundation

I'm always surprised by people who begin to criticize a whole series based on the first episode. First of all, we need to know what the crime was and the basic details. We need to get to know the characters and a bit of background on them. Thirdly, this is a small town where people will not keep their noses out of others' business and we begin to see those. But mostly, we see the interrogation of the husband and the failure to give him his rights. Then we have a prosecutor who has her mind made up. There is obviously no investigation started. The husband did it. Case closed. End of subject. We also meet Pam, who is quirky and full of herself. So the groundwork is there. Let's see what happens.

Meh

It was more quirky than I thought it would be. There's one scene in particular where an officer runs down the hall to remind another officer to read the husband of the dead woman his rights that seemed "over the top," to quote the cops on another matter.

Keith Morrison narrates it and though I love Morrison, it reminds me that this would probably be better as a "Dateline" episode, not a dramatization of the murder.
