Depressing Look at 9/11 and Greed

9/11: Millionaire Widows (2008)

*** (out of 4)

I've seen quite a few documentaries on 9/11 and they certainly get my blood boiling at times because of the chaos that was caused that day. At the same time there are so many heroic and brave stories from that day. When you watch enough of these documentaries you really do see how many special stories were out there but this film here shows a very ugly side of the aftermath.

The Victim's Compensation Fund was set up so that family members could get some financial support after their loved ones were killed on 9/11. The only problem is that there were a lot of issues with the actual system including placing a "value" on lives. Meaning, were richer people worth more money than someone who might have just been a janitor or cook in the buildings? The other problem is pure old-fashioned greed.

This documentary takes a look at a group of women who all had issues with the millions of dollars that they got. One woman talks about her husband's stepchildren causing a fight over the money. We also hear from a gay woman's whose partner was killed and then her brother tried to get the money with lies. We also hear a few other stories including one from a woman whose boyfriend was killed and his family attacked her to try and get control of their daughter's money.

There are some really ugly stories told here and it just goes to show how much bad can come from greed. Some of the stories are downright depressing as the ladies talk about the last time they spoke with their spouses, seeing the attacks on television and then what further added to their pain.
