14-year-old Thomas Horn continued his adventure of a lifetime going back to October 2010 and winning $31K in prize money on the popular TV game show Jeopardy!, earning representation at ICM and his first starring role in a major Hollywood movie, an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close opposite Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Horn took part in an awards season party at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive and told The L.A. Times how he prepared to play Oskar Schell, a 9-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome who loses his father in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

hollywoodnews.com: The “Awards Season Screener” of choice from family members visiting over the holiday weekend was Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” (The second most popular was Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” followed by “The Artist.”)
All three went over very well – an extremely unscientific poll, which is influenced by overeating and alcohol – but “Loud” was a devastator. I now know at what moment I need to get up and get the tissue boxes ready, because the tears are about to flow.
It worked every time. And now that I’ve seen it a number of times, I’m even more confident throwing my support behind Daldry’s powerful and moving drama. With an absolute sensitivity to the people and events surrounding 2001's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is an emotionally staggering adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name. Director Stephen Daldry has taken Eric Roth's (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) screenplay and crafted a film that will have you welling up early and often as it not only manages to be respectful of the events and the millions of lives that were affected, but it's done in such a way that the tears are earned rather than merely the result of the tragic event at the film's core.
Set one year after the September 11th attacks, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close follows the story of young Oskar Schell (played to perfection by Thomas Horn) after he lost his father (Tom Hanks) in one of the Towers. Oskar held...

Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, and 13-year-old "Jeopardy!" Kids Week champion Thomas Horn stepped out in their best at last night's "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" premiere at New York City's Ziegfeld Theatre.
Based on Jonathan Safran Foer's post-9/11 novel, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" tells the story of a boy (Horn) struggling to accept the death of his father (Hanks) who died in the twin towers on September 11th. Horn, who plays Bullock's son, told Access Hollywood that Bullock did her best to make him feel comfortable on set. "She would always give me encouragement," he said.
Also gracing the red carpet were their co-stars Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright, and Max Von Sydow.

Warner Bros. has released a second trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s 9/11-inspired novel. If you’re still sobbing from the film’s first preview, don’t put down your hanky just yet. We get more glimpses of the sweet relationship between Oskar Schell (precocious Jeopardy! champion Thomas Horn) and his father (Tom Hanks) that inspires the boy to undertake a citywide quest to learn about a mysterious key.
It’s Sandra Bullock, though, who really delivers on the story’s inherent emotion, particularly during a fraught phone call with her husband (Hanks) that will be their last.

Thoughts by Tsr: This film was always going to be met with cries of Oscar Bait! It’s true that it’s an awards play if there ever was one, and it may come across as manipulative in spots, but most of it feels genuine. I got goose bumps at a couple points and won’t be surprised if the film leaves a lot of audiences in tears.
We’re all familiar with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, but someone we had no prior performances to go off of is teen “Jeopardy!” champion Thomas Horn. He plays a boy searching post-9/11 New York City for the lockbox that fits a key his father left him. It can be dicey having a child actor leading a film,...

Thomas Horn, who plays the 9-year-old protagonist in this winter's Tom Hanks/Sandra Bullock feature Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which is gaining Oscar steam), gives a somewhat stilted first impression in the movie's trailer. He came off much stronger as a champion on Jeopardy!, where he towered over last year's Kids Week with a $31,800 finish. I say we judge his potential based on his Trebekian skills, not his trailer prowess. Which categories did he soar in? And are they helpful when solving Tom Hanks's key riddle?...

I feel restrained considering the subject matter, but here it goes anyways: I want to punch that little kid in the face. Thomas Horn who’s only other credit is having won Teen Jeopardy back in 2009 just ruined any chance of interest I had in this movie. Saying that, it probably wasn’t his idea to shake a tambourine and play U2 music to the action on screen.

Yes, when a movie is rooted in the tragic events of 9/11, it's destined to be emotional. So, not surprisingly, this new trailer for the upcoming film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close may be a bit hard to watch at times, but it's also very uplifting. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer, it centers on a 9-year-old boy named Oskar (Jeopardy! winner Thomas Horn) as he deals with the loss of his father (Tom Hanks) at the Twin Towers. When he discovers a key that belonged to his Dad, Oskar embarks on an offbeat quest for information as to what it unlocks. Sandra Bullock, appearing in her first role since taking home an Academy Award for The Blind Side, plays Oskar's mom....

There are moments in Jonathan Safran Foer’s best-selling 2005 novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close that are so unimaginably heartbreaking, it’s hard — despite how good the book is — to not to need to put it down and take a breather (or just have a really good cry). For those unfamiliar with Foer’s novel, about a young, imaginative New York City boy named Oskar (Jeopardy! winner Thomas Horn, making his big screen debut) who loses his father (Tom Hanks) in the Sept. 11 attacks, the trailer might be just as weepy.

Full disclosure: I have not read Jonathan Safran Foer‘s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I read his Everything is Illuminated and it just wasn’t my bag, so it’s fair to say that a part of me has been dreading the latest film adaptation of one of his novels. Stephen Daldry‘s take on the material seems a bit pre-packaged for the proper type of awards season buzz, what with its heavy hitter cast (Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, and Jeffrey Wright), the vaguely stunt-y casting of its young lead (Thomas Horn, a non-actor who reportedly got the part after his win on Jeopardy!), and a Christmas Day release date. There’s also the very premise of the book. The plot centers around young Oskar Schell, a kid genius who loses his dad in the 9/11 attacks. After Oskar finds a key in his dad’s belongings, he...

Warner Bros. has lifted the lid off their final major Oscar contender of the year with the first trailer for Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a 9/11-themed drama based on the novel by novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and adapted for the screen by Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).
The story centers on Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn), a nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist, as he searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father (Tom Hanks) when he was killed in the September 11 attacks. Along with Horn and Hanks, the film co-stars Sandra Bullock, Max von Sydow, Viola Davis, John Goodman, Jeffrey Wright and James Gandolfini and after a test screening in New York over the weekend it is already getting very good buzz, but I'll have more on that soon enough.

Here's the trailer for Stephen Daldry's adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, based on a script by Eric Roth. The movie has been a curiosity for me for months in part because the book is a piece of post-modernism that doesn't lend itself easily to adaptation, and in part because Daldry chose a non-actor, Thomas Horn, to play the central role of 11-year old Oskar Schell. Sure, he's got established stars like Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock as buffers, but that's still a ballsy move. Get the first taste of what came of that big risk-taking, after the break. To recap one quick detail, Thomas Horn was a young Jeopardy! winner, and that exposure lead to his casting in this film. He looks solid interacting with Tom Hanks, who plays his father, but his voice-over in the trailer doesn't sound natural to me at all.

Working with child actors in central roles can be a major gamble. While you could end up with a revelation like the Coen brothers did when they cast Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross in True Grit, the other side of that coin is Jake Lloyd in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Enter Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Star Thomas Horn will be making his acting debut in the movie after gaining notoriety for winning on Jeopardy. But how will he do? The first trailer for the film suggests that he'll be just fine. Check out the preview below or in HD over on Apple. First, if you’re looking for some quality fiction, Jonathan Safran Foer’s novels are always winners. His breakout, Everything is Illuminated, was made into a film starring Elijah Wood. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch.

All round good guy and Hollywood A-Lister Tom Hanks is box office gold; it’s a fact, in total his films have made over Us $4 Billion and his last outing the mind numbingly average Larry Crowne which he wrote, starred in and directed somehow made a profit (just). Which goes some way to answering why his next film Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close has been rescheduled for a family friendly Christmas release.
Warner Bros. have also released this debut image from the movie, which includes a very familiar looking Hanks with newbie Thomas Horn (winner of American TV show Jeopardy! apparently).

Warner Bros. evidently has high hopes for Stephen Daldry‘s adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, as the studio recently set the film for a December 25 debut. Indeed, the novel, which is a quirky but heartfelt account of a young boy's attempt to uncover some family history in the wake of 9/11, could easily be the basis for a moving holiday film. I'm anxious to see a trailer, in part because the key role in the film -- the boy Oskar -- went to a non-actor: young Jeopardy! winner [1] Thomas Horn. The potential that this film will reveal a new young talent seems high, much as True Grit did last year with Hailee Steinfeld.
