Sam & Kate
Cold_Aqua_Tomato25 December 2022
Just watched it and it's lovely. Nothing groundbreaking, but on the other hand, one could say they don't make films like this any longer, unfortunately.

It's a simple story and yes, there are a couple of clichés, but it's still refreshing. Do you know why? There is a man and a woman, and they fall in love. No propaganda whatsoever. How sad is it that this kind of story is such a rarity these days?

One annoying downside is that it is marketed as a romantic comedy, which it is not. There is one character who is there for comic relief, I guess, but he is not funny.

Dustin Hoffman is fantastic. He is one of my favourite actors ever. It hurts to see him getting so old...

Lovely, Simple
agfw-282-77800320 November 2022
No expectations, no trailer, little information, romantic comedy.

This movie just popped up, usually I have no interest in this sort of movie and the only draw to it was DH.

For a slow burner the pacing was nice, Goldilocks even.

It's a simple story that would reflect many audience members lives or if not, would have a familiar ring to it for at least one of its story threads.

It doesn't batter you over the head with its themes or narrative and thankfully let's you fill in the blanks and work out the context and conclusions.

The actors are gentle the dialogue is light and witty. Don't expect head thrown back laughter but chuckles and titters, in a good way.

I have done no research but I would be surprised if this didn't come from a small book or short story, possibly an off broadway or festival play. Though I'm probably wrong!

For a lazy warm Sunday afternoon go watch and have a glass of wine!

It was good, but...
paul_haakonsen18 November 2022
As I sat down to watch the 2022 comedy "Sam & Kate" from writer and director Darren Le Gallo, I must admit that I had some expectations to the movie. Sure, I hadn't heard about the movie prior to getting the opportunity to sit down and watch it. But seeing that the movie had the likes of Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek on the cast list, of course I had to give it a chance.

The storyline in "Sam & Kate" is actually interesting and nicely written by Darren Le Gallo. I enjoyed how the narrative in the movie was something very relatable and realistic, and it made for a very down to earth viewing experience. However, I must admit that I felt that the end of the movie felt rushed, as if they were running out of funds and had to close down production post haste.

The acting performances in "Sam & Kate" were good. And the movie is nicely carried by the cast ensemble, which includes the likes of Henry Thomas, Tyler Labine, Schuyler Fisk and Jake Hoffman, not to mention Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, of course.

I was genuinely entertained by Darren Le Gallo's movie, though I wasn't fond of the ending. But if you enjoy a feel-good drama, then you definitely should watch "Sam & Kate". Now, the movie is listed as a comedy, but this is not the type of comedy that will have you toppling over laughing. Nay, this is more of a drama laced with comedy elements.

While "Sam & Kate" certainly is watchable, this is hardly a movie that warrants more than just a single viewing.

My rating of "Sam & Kate" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Featured actors play characters with their real life dad and mom.
TxMike10 February 2023
The title makes it clear this is a story about the son and daughter, played by Jake Hoffman as Sam and Schuyler Fisk as Kate. Their parents in the movie are played by their real life parents, Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek. It didn't start out that way, but when an actor dropped out Dustin was pulled in.

Set and filmed in a small Georgia town, Sam is an aspiring artist who works in a low-paying job in a candy factory. He lives with his old dad to help take care of him and although a very kind 40-something man is somewhat of a slacker.

Kate has an air of mystery about her, she co-owns and works in a book store. When Sam is first smitten with her she tells him she isn't really into dating just then, much later we find out about her tragic losses.

A lot happens in this movie but it all happens very deliberately. Some might term it "slow." But it moves along at the right pace for the story, which involves issues with each parent as well as the two 40-something children finding ways to move forward in their lives.

My wife and I enjoyed it, streaming on NBC's Peacock site.

As an aside Dustin and Jake Hoffman first acted in the same movie in the 1988 movie "Rain Man."

Endearing and authentic to true life
daneuhaus-9383012 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie made me cry a couple times. Mostly because if you have experienced ailing family who are hoarders, you understand the pain and reason they are the way they are. It was high on emotional intelligence and also makes you remember to not lose moments or opportunities that you will regret in life. I liked that it had generational actors, you always feel there is more authenticity in the actors connection. Its definitely palpable here. I really enjoyed the movie alot. Listen closely to the words she sings at the piano at the end, they are significant to the closure of the movie. Watch it!

Entertaining and a good senior date movie
herbqedi14 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As a married senior, this was our weekly date movie and a very appropriate one. Instead of romcom, I'd call this one a "rom-dramedy"

Sam & Kate had the novelty of starring the great Oscar-winning Dustin Hoffman (Bill) and Sissy Spacek with their children. Both "courtships" and their preludes were interesting. Nicely intersecting slices of life. Although an ensemble piece, Sam (Jake Hoffman) is probably the main character in the film and has the most screen time. Perhaps ever-so-slightly over-theatrical at times, Jake has otherwise nailed the character and holds our attention. Kate also is interesting and is very mysterious about revealing her back story. Her relationship with her girlfriend and partner Mary at the bookstore is also pleasant. Mary helps facilitate the relationship at every opportunity.

The central relationship between Sam & Kate has good chemistry, the requisite amount of quirkiness and lots of charm. It also has the usual but maddening ghosting periods of relationship movies where nobody says what they are dying to say to the other person and we go to moody musical montages.

The acting of the four leads and the supporting characters range from very good to excellent with one exception, Henry Thomas from ET fame, 40 years later. He's Sam's best friend and a pothead but he's neither realistic nor interesting. On the other hand, even with little to do in a minuscule role, Tyler Labine is delightful

Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek are excellent facilitators as well as developing a delightfully awkward romance of their own until we approach the denouement. Then he discovers that Spacek has a hoarding issue and the story takes a darker turn and also slows down a bit. I won't reveal more other than that the final scenes are very satisfactory.

two legends and their kids
SnoopyStyle20 June 2023
Sam (Jake Hoffman) has come home to care for his ailing father Bill (Dustin Hoffman). He's taken with book seller Kate (Schuyler Fisk). Bill becomes interested in her mother Tina (Sissy Spacek).

These are two Hollywood legends and their kids. Of the four of them, there is one squeaky wheel. Jake Hoffman is not a big name. His acting is limited. He does fit this slacker loser role. I accept his mistaken donation as the story's need for drama. For his character's sake, he really should have a big cinematic redemption. He should wait at the donation bin for days if necessary to get her stuff back. That's a writing problem. It comes down to Darren Le Gallo's full length debut as a director and as a writer. It's a small story that needs a more skilled hand at the wheel. The two Hollywood legends deliver. Schuyler Fisk should probably do more movies. I'm sure that she's happy with her music career. It's just that she has this adorable coolness that really works on the screen.

Nothing funny about it
mbzizi14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was long and drawn out, annoying & not at all funny. More depressing actually. Didn't leave us feeling good We wanted to watch something else after but being late for my parents didn't would love to get their $$ back actually.

Uplifting not at all. Good acting yes. Some spots had irritating sharp music not relevant had to mute! Not for the elderly & ill to make feel better at all. Billed as comedy with no comedy in the context. Calling father Bill not Dad was ridiculous as well actor's definitely did their job being annoying. Dustin Hoffmans son good actor as Dad is. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful movie.
barryjknight-9200418 November 2022
I stumbled across this movie today(day of release) by accident and what a delight. I would usually watch the trailer and decide if it is worth a watch but i jumped straight in and it was brilliant. Superb acting from all and a really lovely story. Dustin Hoffman is tremendous as always.

I love the way they have used actual parent and child actors here, makes it more special.

The only downside to this movie is watching dustin as an old man. Its terribly sad seeing him grow old, he's still fantastic and a legendary actor.

A real fantastic piece of cinema that is definitely worth a watch. I'd give it 8/10 .

The Cast Shines
StephenTX15 October 2023
Some may feel prior to viewing Sam & Kate that the casting of film legends Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek's adult children is a gimmick to garner publicity for the film, and of course it likely was an intended angle. However, Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk are accomplished actors in their own right so the on-screen interactions are very organic and natural and in no way a distraction. One comment I've read is that Schuyler is such a natural, bright light of a presence here and I agree we should see more from her on screen. The story itself is more dramatic than the marketing would lead you to believe, which is so often the case. But the storytelling is first-rate and moves along nicely with some unexpected character developments, even though Dustin's arc is fairly predictable from the start. Spacek has the strongest and most interesting material in my opinion and she performs with her customary charm and understated artistry. It's been a real treat to see some of her later work finally pair her with other film heavyweights such as Robert Duvall, Robert Redford, and now Dustin Hoffman. Overall, a mostly dramatic film with strong and likeable performances carrying the day.

Definitely not a Rom-Com
nancylmarine12 February 2023
Based on this starring Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, I watched the movie.

The basic premise is nice, but the movie moved a little too slowly for me.

Given the level of talent in this movie, I think I expected more, but I can't quite put my finger on just what exactly was missing.

I liked both Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk and the characters they played, who were both likeable people, too.

Given it was classified as a Rom-Com, shouldn't there have been more laughs in the movie? From what I saw, it was pure drama, with no real rom or com in it, other than the potential of a relationship between Sam & Kate and Bill & Tina.

Maybe it was the full-on arthouse feel to the film that kind of turned me off, I guess? I'm not sure.

This story had the potential to be a really great movie/story and somehow, it just kind of fell flat with me. And I wish I could have loved the film more because so much of it is entirely relatable to most people.

A Great Lighthearted Romantic Drama
AuVid20 November 2022
There are so many positives to this movie, I almost feel bad starting with the poster: it is so misleading!

You look at the poster and you thing this will be just one more of those crazy silly comedies. This couldn't be any farther from the truth.

This movie is deep and thoughtful, with intertwined stories very well connected and rooted in reality.

You watch it and it makes you feel all kinds of emotions:
  • there is a light comedy that makes you chuckle on many places and, best of all, it never feels forced.

  • there is unlikely romances that you can't foresee how this could possibly happen, and it catches you by surprise slowly developing into something nice and beautiful without any of those "magic moments" that so often happen on rom-coms.

  • there is also a bit of drama that makes you cry and feel deeply for the characters and move you along the progression of the story in a very natural way.

In SUMMARY: an almost perfect script, filled with great actors, all very well cast on each role; you'll feel all the emotions and you'll be grateful that you have picked this film to watch at the end.

A Nepo Baby Romance Complicated by the Infirmities of Aging Parents
EUyeshima17 September 2023
According to social influencers, 2022 was deemed the Year of the Nepo Baby referring to the children of celebrities finding success in careers similar to their parents. This romantic dramedy was released that year, and coincidentally, it starred screen veterans Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek and their adult children, Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk. In this case, the younger generation turned out to be personable actors who carry the central love story with aplomb. Through relatable circumstances, their characters have taken on the caretaker role for their respective aging parents both of them going through their own infirmities. First-time director Darren Le Gallo handles the multi-generational relationships with sensitivity, but the pacing often felt glacial and the film overlong at 110 minutes. Some scenes were repetitive in their intent, especially in spotlighting the impact of the deterioration of the elders. The older Hoffman and Spacek play their measured roles with their customary skill, but the film finds more of its rhythm in the younger Hoffman's quirky pursuit of Fisk playing a self-protective character. I guess this would be considered a nepo baby romance.

I wanted to love this
jenmath6631 August 2023
I really love the two older actors so I wanted to love this. I did not. This movie doesn't know what it wants to be; romantic comedy or tragic love story. It really fails at both IMO. And the ending? Nope. The chemistry between the two younger actors is ok, but I think her acting was flat. He was pretty good. I didn't feel any chemistry between Dustin and Cissy at all. He was just awful throughout this movie. Not his acting, his character. No redeemable qualities at all. Overall I gave this a 4 and I think I'm being generous. I really wish this had been a much better movie. I love Dustin and Cissy.

kids looking after their parentals
ksf-224 March 2023
Fun little film, with hoffman and son. And the mother daughter team of sissie spacek and schuyler fisk. Sam and kate are each trying to look after a parent, and having mixed results. And everyone here has flaws or weaknesses. Like we all do. Parents and kids know how to push each other's buttons, so it results in poor communication. People don't say what's really bothering them. It's pretty well written. There are some threads left hanging, but mostly on minor points in the grand scheme of the story. We never do find out why sam can't call his father "dad". We never found out if sam got the box back for tina. Did he ever apologize to her for goofing up in the first place. It's already one hour fifty minutes, so i'm guessing a few things were left on the editing floor. Very cute! It does end on an upbeat note. Written and directed by darren le gallo... his second, so far.

Superbly performed & written romantic / family drama - a gem
danieljfarthing13 February 2023
Excellent romantic / family drama "Sam & Kate" features four superb central performances (with Henry Thomas & Elizabeth Ludlow also good in support) and Darren Le Gallo's fine direction & even better writing. Talented (but rather lost) artist Jake Hoffman's back in his small hometown to care for curmudgeonly elderly widow dad Dustin Hoffman (Jake's actual dad btw). The two meet and strike up relationships of sorts with mum & daughter Sissy Spacek & Schuyler Fisk (also actual parent & child), but things aren't as simple as they may seem, and events take deeper, darker, but authentic turns. It's a surprising gem, and an absolutely outstanding debut from Le Gallo.

Great film with a great cast.
abbafan-1696022 February 2023
This film was actually really, really good I didn't think that it would be anywhere near as good as it actually was, the film stars classic actors Sissy Spacek and Dustin Hoffman and they're children actually play they're kids in this film. This movie is so funny and so adorable but there are also a few moments that are pretty sad and made me a little emotional so if you cry pretty easily get some tissues for this film. The film is about 2 characters Sam and Kate who meet and obviously the typical romcom stuff starts between them but it's also about they're parents bill and Tina (my personal opinion is they are the best part of this film) they're so funny. I absolutely love this movie and think it was one of 2022's greatest films.

Authentic, quiet weekend watch- grab a blanket & light a candle-ENJOY
acampo-8076818 November 2023
Always being a fan of Dustin Hoffman and knowing the acting chops of Sissy Spacek, after watching the trailer it compelled me to watch.

A quarter of the way through I checked IMDB to see if possibly the character Sam was Dustin's son. The noses prompted me to check and I was pleasantly surprised to find out he was! Kate's similar looks to Tina (and nose too) was also Sissy's real daughter. The chemistry between this cast is so palpable as you feel the connections coming from the scenes.

I found myself smiling and chucking and also wanting to know what would happen throughout the whole movie. It was slower but it allowed me to feel the emotions it was giving and really enjoy it. You have to be in the right frame of mind to slow yourself down to really encapsulate what the movie so kindly gifts you.

I wouldn't consider it a romcom but it was about love and romance to be fair. Life, not being easy, is depicted in this treasure and will tug at your heart. I most definitely shed quite a few tears but also was left associating it to my own life many times and smiled as it was quite endearing. Being a creative, I enjoyed the collective tapestry of the art, music, books and small town living that brought the charm that makes it a cozy find.

No spoilers as this movie unravels deliciously and that's one of the best parts. I didn't want it to end and also, like others, felt the end was a bit rushed. It's slow burn and movies not wanting to be over 2 hours these days, possibly found it needing to come to a close sooner than it needed to be.

All in all, truly an enchanting find that even compelled me to write my very first movie review! If you like music lyrics, don't miss listening intently to the last song played by Kate on piano, really puts a bow on the love this movie brings.

Sam and Kate was pretty good.
evansfanchris-0077622 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I give this film a: 10 out of 10.

I highly recommend that you guys check this film out for yourself because it's actually really good.

The film is about: Sam, a regular worker at a chocolate factory meets Kate, who owns a library, who widely smiling rejects his advance by saying she is not dating. Sam is a gifted artist and lives with Bill, who we will later know is his father, and Kate regularly visits her mother Tina who lives on her own and suffers from Diogenes' syndrome (in Kate's words, "she is a hoarder"). Kate can't stand looking at pictures her mother has just found and leaves sobbing. Bill has some health problems and smokes, drinks and eats red meat against the advice of his doctor. Kate accepts a coffee with Sam, which they both enjoy, and after a few get togethers which involve family and friends, they kiss, and spend the night together after skating on New Year's Eve. Bill goes on a date with Tina and at the end of a nice dinner, at the sight of Tina's house unlivable condition due to the accumulation of all sorts of objects, he leaves abruptly. Kate decides it is time for emptying again her mother's house. Sam and others help and Sam finds pictures of Kate with a baby boy and another man. After mistakingly throwing in a donation container a box with Tina's items that Kate marked as to keep, she confesses to Sam that her family died in a car accident. One day, Sam comes back home to find his father dead in front of the TV. After a few days, he goes to Kate's house to tell her that he has learned so much from his father going through his things, which he should've known from him when he was alive. He confesses he would hate for her not to know how much she means to him and they fall into a warm embrace and kiss.

Cast: Dustin Hoffman as Bill Sissy Spacek as Tina Jake Hoffman as Sam Schuyler Fisk as Kate.

Quality movie that will tug at your emotions
ninjafoofighter21 April 2023
Only watched this movie to see Dustin Hoffman again. But was pleasantly suprised by the other actors/actresses in this movie, especially to find out at the end that the father and son and mother and daughter roles were real life relationships. Great performances by offspring Jake Hoffman and Shuyler Fisk. Have now become fans off both.

A movie that held my interest to the end. Well directed, acted, great cast and music.

This is a movie that I think many people will find parts that they can relate too. A believable movie well worth watching and may even teach you something or get you thinking.

Enjoyable parent and adult child movie
Frenchi17 April 2023
This is an enjoyable movie highlighting generational and moral differences, that featured two well known & accomplished actor/actress in the lead roles, along with their real life grown son and daughter starring with them as the second couple. I loved the dynamics between the parent and child in both of these situations. Touching on the topic of when a parent needs to treat and respect their child as a functioning adult capable of making his own decisions, and when an adult child must realize they must step in and take charge for a parent who has lost control of their life and is not making appropriate healthy choices. Good movie!
