This movie had great screening and the way that they captured how these things really happen in our society was good.all of the actors did a wonderful job playing there roles which made the movie even more interesting.i would recommend showing this movie to others because it creates awareness among the population about the discrimination crisis all over the world. The way the movie was setup to show both sides of the story made it easier to understand why there even is a crisis.people from all over the world are getting the wrong information and are being influenced by the wrong people.on the other side the other reason there's a crisis is because foreigners are coming to America for jobs that they don't have in there countries.basically i would say this is a great movie to use if i was trying to stress a point about what effects discrimination has on the world.

Movie Review

Warning: Spoilers
Tought to hate was a good and very interesting movie. I liked how it turned out to be good even though it was only 27 minutes long. I feel that this movie would have been better if it had been longer, because it could have went into more details about the families and their lives. It had a good story to it, and it kept my attention through out the movie. I was disappointed that it ended as quick as it did, because it was just that good. It was sad to see what happened at the end, all because the uncle had talked stupidity into his nephew and that caused his nephew too do something that will now haunt him. I also would have liked to see what happened to the kid, and their families after what had happened. Like did the uncle talk to the kids mother after what had happened with her son because of the uncle? or did the other kids get into trouble for participating or knowing about killing the man? I feel that, that would have helped stretch out more about the movie just with those two. But overall it was a great movie, and I would recommend this to anybody.

An emotive depiction of the effects and consequences of people's decision to hate what is different; and nurturing this contempt in younger generations.
rtside4215 February 2010
This film is a commendable piece of work. A good cast is brought together to tell a powerful, tragic story of innocence lost. The cause of the many subtle facets of tragedy, tragedies branching from a central incident and affecting all characters, is herein the main theme of the film. A theme I interpreted as an exploration into the inherent dangers of the spreading of messages of hate from older, trusted members of society to the younger more inexperienced. The film presents us with an escalation of emotions that stirs within the human psyche and feeds on a torrent of racial biases; some less than subtle and very consciously detectable, but others of a more covert breed. I appreciate the filmmaker's ambition to delve into a moral issue as complex as this (i.e. illegal immigration and labor association); especially when clear-cut solutions for these issues simply don't exist. In a more perfect world true feelings would be put on mass forum for debate from all angles of society, with a hope and an aim to find a much needed common ground that promotes human rights for all parties. But for today this is still a pipe dream; we rely on others to get the word out and everyone who worked on this project should be proud of their stake in the claim.

Excellent depiction of how hate against immigrants overwhelms...
Denchavarr29 September 2009
I was lucky enough to catch a screening of this short film while visiting in California. It is a story of an American family who is faced with tragedy caused by hate. The movie was directed and produced entirely by a new comer who happens to be of Ecuadorian descent and chose to write this story in response to the numerous crimes committed against immigrants seeking work in the United States. The movie is very indulging and the camera work is very good. The acting is very impressive with the majority of characters being unknowns with the exception of the main character. The boy is played by Brandon Hannan who starred in The Sopranos as the son of the Gay mobster whose show name escapes me right now.

The movie leaves an impression and gets it's message across successfully. Most hate crimes are factors driven by culture and ignorance that if left unchecked lead to even more pain and anguish. Besides being a great short film with a message this movie should be praised for it's important look into the problem with hate crime in America.

Taught to Hate, is almost a Shrine to every Marcelo Lucero out there.
steven-leventhal17 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps the most pathetic thing is that America has tools that link all of our computing devices together, planes that fly overhead, and cement to fill the cracks; yet we can't get rid of one thing that's been around practically since the beginning of time itself, HATE. About a year ago Ecuadorian Marcelo Lucero was the target of a hate crime, because he was an immigrant, who was just trying to earn his way in the Untied States. Lucero was murdered by a hate group, targeting immigrants in Long Island, NY.

Taught to Hate, is almost a Shrine to every Marcelo Lucero out there. It imprints the story of an immigrant, who faced hard times in his country, and leaves the country only to find even harder times. Producer/director James Garcia Sotomayor does a wonderful job of showing the viewer exactly that, with an almost lifelike screenplay and quality actors. Also, the sophisticated camera angles, and a simple yet appropriate score, make it apparent that all stops were pulled out during the making of this film. A+

It was good.

I think that it was a good movie because it shows a true depiction of how people act towards illegal immigrants. It also shows that the illegal immigrants aren't trying to steal American jobs but are just trying to make a better life for their families back home. In the movie, Richie's mother was sick and he just wanted to make money for her. I think it was wrong for the kids to physically hurt him regardless of how they personally felt. But the movie does show real issues and true feelings of how people act towards illegal immigrants. I also felt as if the movie was slightly one-sided because everyone was 100% against the illegal immigrants. But no one viewed the employers who like the fact that they work for a lesser wage. How can you be upset with someone for wanting to work for less money than someone else. Of course the lower rate will get the job. But in actuality, they are at a loss because they are being ripped off.

Great illustration of how racial hate an violence can bring tragedy to both the attacker and the victim
elianavillalta17 November 2009
Bravo! I had the opportunity to see this movie at the Queens Film Festival and it was great!

Congratulations to everyone that was part of the film! The plot and the actors were excellent. I definitely believe that this movie can touch hearts, especially those of our youth.

It is true, the foundations of our society start with the schooling that we get at home. Hate and violence not only bring tragedy to the victims but self destruction to those that practice them. This movie illustrates that in a very simple yet artistic way.

Good luck to all! I really hope that many people get to see this production.

This short film was a great insight to how hate can spread like a wild fire. It also is a real demonstration on how susceptible children in a home are. You have to watch what you say to them and how you say it. It really shows how the hate of someone's race is unacceptable and unnecessary, it does not give anyone permission to hurt an innocent person. Assumption and fear of something or someone different can lead to such negative outcomes that can be prevented with education and an open mind. I really enjoyed the reality of this film, the issues presented and the consequences of wrong actions, as well. Itwas an eye opener to see that the fear of one person can spread to countless others in a heartbeat.

Excellent film with true feeling to a serious situation that the Latin community faces daily.
Edwing_cruz0426 July 2010
I was truly impressed with this film. I believe it captured true emotions, in all aspect, that people face with hate crimes. It showed how this type of crime effect both parties involved as well as the family of those involved. I am happy to hear of the James Sotomayor is being sought out to present this film to high school student so they can also be reminded of the consequences and the severity involved with racism. I was also impressed with the setting that was established to show the character's upbringing as well as the family members that impacted that as well. The film also showed how till this day many immigrants see the United States as "The land of opportunity" when in fact it is even harder for someone to find employment in this country without being a legal resident or citizen. I would like to thank all parties involved in making this project and wish them the best of luck! The message involved should truly be shared!

Half way good actors with good point
oXnataliieXo2118 December 2009
I saw this movie as a part of my Business Communications class as a total surprise. The reason being is because my teacher just decided that we should see this. From the beginning I didn't find it that interesting but as I continued to watch it it began to catch my attention more and more. During the movie I had a flashback because I live in Long Island I remembered hearing on the news about they Latino that got beat up by a bunch of high school kids and thats what the movie was inspired by. This movie shows what ignorance people have and what there ignorance can do to someone else. For instance, the uncle had a negative attitude for Latin day laborers so thats what his nephew started to think. Overall the acting was second rate for the most part but it did prove a good point.

great movie, this review has spoiler

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a great reflection of common perspectives. Movie touches you emotions, and shows realities of both sides of the story. Not sure if an immigrant is going to take a swing at a couple of guys. Nicemessage with realistic ending. A pleasure to watch. Takes place on local long island, NY. Actors were pretty good. Cinematography was great. Direction was great. Looking forward to showing the movie to high school classes. Every teenager, parent, and teacher should see it. This could be done in a full length movie and really portray the characters and setting better. Looking forward to other great movies from this director.

Educationial and hits home about discrimination
newyorker1231 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The story was real and the characters came out on screen well. The story moves well and is easily understood. When you're finished watching this short film it makes you think about what's going on in your own backyard/neighborhood. Though the movie ends on a sad note (sorry for the spoiler) it does so by delivering its message about discrimination. The cinematography was 1st class in my opinion for a low budget short film. This movie would benefit schools and would be something that could educate our youth. I thought the movie was well acted. Finally, I thought the acting of Antonio and his sister Carmen really made this film come to life during the flashbacks between the two (without these flashbacks it would not have been the same. This part of the story was really well written and deserves an A+ for how and when these flashbacks took place in the movie).

Great Work
bacanoh29 July 2010
This movie does a great job showing the root of such a degrading problem as it is prejudice. As bad as hate is, it is easy to let the cause of it pass us by undetected. This movie let us see one of the sources of hate and makes us aware so we can avoid this kind of tragedies. If we take the time to understand the reason for people actions we might be able to help each other correct the worst problems of our society. It is easy to judge someone's action and condemn everything they are and do but the difficult part is to try and dig deep to find the reason for it. Everything we ignore we make up instead of finding out the truth. Finding the truth will make us a more tolerant society willing to help people and not hurt them. Great job by everyone involved in sending this message across.

The movie helped spread awareness.
fvilk18 December 2009
I thought the movie was very interesting since it was filmed on Long Island. It was a great idea to base it on what happened in Patchogue last year. By doing that, the truth was exposed about crimes like these that happen all the time, not just on Long Island. I think there are a lot of families like this all over Long Island and the United States. People should be aware of what goes on and this movie helped spread awareness. A lot of these crimes are occurring right now because it is so hard to find jobs and employers would rather pay low wages to illegal immigrants rather than Americans. The only part i didn't like was when Mary dropped the cup, it did not look realistic. But other than that, it got the point across you were trying to show.

Overall good movie!
michael-escobar15 December 2009
Both the message of the film, as well as the trials and tribulations of the characters were covered well. The character development was just enough to provide a sense of attachment to each viewpoint and to the overall emotion of the film. The statistics at the end of the film brought realism to the story. Hate crimes are on the rise and hopefully by people watching this genre of film, it will make the viewer wonder how many incidents such as this have or will happen when driving by local immigrant workers. The cinematography was very good. The acting from the main character was lackluster. Supporting cast was above average giving the movie a realistic feel.

Overall good
akizumiko18 December 2009
This short movie is overall good for learning purposes and awareness. The situation is real and is displayed well in the movie. The actors are okay, not too convincing at some points. It felt a little rushed at some scenes. When they were playing baseball it was too rushed and seemed unbelievable. The camera angles were okay, a little mediocre at some points. Like it was too dark or the film was taken from a cheap angle a few times. I think this is a movie that should be shown in multicultural classes in high schools. It will give awareness to kids about the racism people encounter when they come to America. The movie overall seems like it can only be used for a class not like a watching movie to go and see somewhere.

Warning: Spoilers
the movie was very interesting especially because i live on the island and know about what went on in Patchogue last year. Although some things need to be fixed like the captions when the Spanish people were talking were written in white and were sometimes against a white background and made it hard to read. I also think that this is not completely true, for example this is a very extreme example of how things happen. Things like this are not in the news everyday because it does not happen that often.

In the end tho the movie was very good and can teach a lesson if shown to kids at the right time in their lives.
