Mike Flanagan Steps Into The Exorcist Franchise Genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for his deep-seated contributions to horror through works like Oculus and The Haunting of Hill House, is currently in discussions to helm the much-anticipated sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. This development follows the departure of David Gordon Green who had initially taken up the directorial mantle for the rebooted franchise but left earlier in January. The evolving dynamics of this storied film series saw a pivotal shift, as Universal and Blumhouse acquired rights from Morgan Creek in July 2021, setting the stage for multiple

Recent horror revival, The Exorcist: Believer, proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of William Friedkin's original masterpiece, but it did actually end up performing pretty well at the box office, which means Universal Pictures and Blumhouse intend to forge ahead with the next instalment in the planned trilogy.
Shortly after the movie hit theaters, we learned that director David Gordon Green had decided not to helm The Exorcist: Deceiver, and the studio has now enlisted a filmmaker that's sure to reignite interest.
According to Jeff Sneider (since backed-up by Deadline), none other than Mike Flanagan is in talks to helm the next Exorcist movie. Whether it will keep the "Deceiver" subtitle is unclear, and we're not sure if the cast of Believer will return - although given the previous film's reception, there's a good...

Mike Flanagan, the prolific filmmaker behind “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is in talks to direct “The Exorcist” sequel for Universal and Blumhouse, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The source stressed it’s early days and a deal is far from guaranteed, but there is interest from both sides and Flanagan has a take on the material.
Universal directed TheWrap’s inquiry to Blumhouse, who had no comment.
In 2021, Universal shelled out $400 million for the rights to the “Exorcist” franchise and planned a trilogy of films, but director and cowriter David Gordon Green exited the series after directing last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer,” despite having mapped out the next two films.

Universal and Blumhouse aren’t ready to give up on their new “The Exorcist” trilogy just yet. Deadline reports that the studios eye horror maestro Mike Flanagan to helm their upcoming sequel “The Exorcist: Deceiver” after David Gordon Green exited the franchise in January. But is that a good idea for all involved?

It seems that a new The Exorcist movie is in the works and no, Russell Crowe is not attached to play the priest who will be doing the exorcising in the movie. But, the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal horror film has seemingly found its director after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. As things stand now, renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie, and based on his earlier work, this might be a hit for the two studios.
Not much is known about the project, as it is still in the early production phases, but we know that the two companies plan to make two additional films, completing the sequel (reboot) trilogy. In fact, Green’s The Exorcist: Deceiver was supposed to come out on April 18, 2025, but after Green’s exit, the movie was postponed indefinitely.

"The Exorcist" franchise might soon receive a new lease on life, courtesy of one of the most prolific horror filmmakers around. After last year's "The Exorcist: Believer" failed to take off either among critics or at the box office, it seemed that Universal Pictures might have to go back to the drawing board before pushing forward with their grand plans for subsequent movies about innocent kids getting possessed by malevolent demons. Those plans took even more of a hit when "Halloween" director David Gordon Green exorcised himself from the series, resulting in the sequel "The Exorcist: Deceiver" getting pushed back indefinitely as the studio searched for another filmmaker.
That search seems to be approaching the finish line, however, and fans will undoubtedly be happy with the No. 1 choice. Late last night, Deadline broke the news that Mike Flanagan is currently in talks to direct the next installment of "The Exorcist" franchise.

One of last fall’s biggest flops was David Gordon Greene’s limp attempt to revive the “Exorcist” franchise for Blumhouse and Universal. “The Exorcist: Believer” was met with intense pans and a worldwide gross of $137 million. That number may not sound so bad at first until you remember that the rights to the franchise alone cost $400 million. While there have been several sequels (plus a double-prequel) to “The Exorcist” since the groundbreaking original that won Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound (plus seven other nominations including Best Picture), this was the first one to bring Ellen Burstyn back into the world of ancient evils and demonic possession.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and viewer reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked – and Green had left the project. Now it...

Recent comments from producer Jason Blum suggested that a retool was in order when last year’s The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t as successful as Blumhouse and Universal hoped. That certainly seems to be the case, as Deadline reports tonight that Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie.
Director David Gordon Green was initially on board to direct an entire trilogy of new movies in the franchise, with The Exorcist: Believer intended to be only the first film in that three-film sequel series. Originally set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver was delayed when Green left the project.
If talks come to fruition, Flanagan will take over, likely steering the franchise in a new direction.
The first film in the trilogy was released theatrically on October 13, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring alongside a returning Ellen Burstyn from the original classic.

Renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck) is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Uni and Blumhouse declined comment. Should a deal make, Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, and while the plan at that point was for at least three new films to be made, it’s unclear whether Flanagan would be on for more than one.
Starring Leslie Odom Jr. as well as franchise veteran Ellen Burstyn, trilogy launcher The Exorcist: Believer fell beneath expectations when it opened to a soft $26.4M domestic last October, going on to gross $65.5M U.S./Canada, $136.2M WW.

It’s no secret that last year’s The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t as successful as Blumhouse and Universal hoped it would be, neither critically nor financially. Director David Gordon Green was initially on board to direct an entire trilogy of new movies in the franchise, with The Exorcist: Believer intended to be only the first film in that three-film sequel series.
It was all part of a massive $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen, and The Exorcist: Deceiver had in fact already been dated for release on April 18, 2025.
Those plans have changed, however. We recently learned that David Gordon Green will not be directing Deceiver as planned, and the movie altogether may have gone up in smoke.

Following the critical and financial disappointment of The Exorcist: Believer, producer Jason Blum says another film is still happening, but suggests a rethink is afoot.
If Universal and Blumhouse expected to set up some kind of ectoplasmic blockbuster franchise with The Exorcist: Believer, they were probably a bit disappointed when the scathing reviews began to roll in last October. They were probably even more disappointed with the box office returns of roughly $137m – a figure said to be considerably below initial expectations.
In the aftermath, the 2025 release window for its sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was quietly closed, and plans for a trilogy were called into question as a result. Universal paid a startling $400m for the Exorcist rights, though, so the studio’s hardly going to let the franchise fade from view entirely.

Blumhouse Pictures CEO Jason Blumhouse revealed why The Exorcist: Deceiver was removed from the studio's release schedule.
In January, The Hollywood Reporter revealed director David Gordan Green had left the in-development sequel to The Exorcist: Believer, titled The Exorcist: Deceiver.
Deceiver, which was set to debut in April 2025, was then completely removed from the release calendar of Universal Pictures, the distributor that bet big on the Exorcist by purchasing the franchise's worldwide rights for a whopping $400 million in 2021 and planning a trilogy with Green.

Some horror properties naturally lend themselves to incessant sequels, while others seem to will themselves into existence through sheer will, as if they’re the result of a demonic possession. William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, while over 50 years old, is still considered to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. Various Exorcist sequels and even a two-season television series have materialized over time. However, none of these projects generated the same level of skepticism that accompanied Blumhouse’s announcement that they’d be producing not just a legacy sequel to Friedkin’s original film, but an entire trilogy, directed by David Gordon Green. Green had just pulled off a similar spectacle with his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy, yet Michael Myers’ slasher antics are much more conducive to this formula than repeated returns to The Exorcist’s MacNeils.

Following the disappointing response to The Exorcist: Believer, David Gordon Green has departed the planned sequel, which has been delayed indefinitely.
Here’s some news that seemed to be on the cards since last October when The Exorcist: Believer released to tepid reviews and grossed $136m worldwide.
That sum may sound like a reasonable haul, but it was considered to be a disappointment given that Green’s revival of Halloween, another classic horror franchise (back in 2018) picked up almost twice that amount at the global box office. It didn’t help that Universal had paid an exorbitant sum for the film rights to The Exorcist either – an eye-watering $400m that it was clearly keen to begin recouping.
It wasn’t long after the film’s release before we heard talk of a ‘creative reset’ and it seemed like the writing might be on the wall for David Gordon Green’s future with the franchise.

Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International have announced the official release date for Michael, the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua. The film will be released worldwide on April 18, 2025, filling the slot left by The Exorcist: Deceiver.
The studios also announced that production has officially begun on Michael, with principal photography set to kick off on January 22nd.
“Michael will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop,” reads the official description. “The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale — from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances. As never before, audiences will experience an inside look into one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known.” John Logan penned the script for Michael, which will be produced by Graham King.

David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy made a lot of spooky coin for the folks at Blumhouse Productions, so it seemed like a no-brainer that the director would be the one to take the reins on a new trilogy of films based on "The Exorcist." The House that Blum Built spent a pretty penny obtaining the rights to the legendary horror film, which meant there was a lot riding on Dgg's first film, "The Exorcist: Believer," to prove this was a prime investment. While the film fortunately brought in over $137 million at the box office against a reported $30 million budget, this doesn't take into consideration the money spent on an aggressive marketing campaign, the astronomical amount they spent for the rights, and lackluster reviews from critics and audiences alike.

David Gordon Green is parting ways with “The Exorcist: Deceiver” sequel reboot after previously directing “The Exorcist: Believer.”
The 2023 horror film disappointed at the box office even while bringing back the original “The Exorcist” stars Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair. Sequel “The Exorcist: Deceiver” was slated to be released by Universal on April 18, 2025.

David Gordon Green won’t be performing another exorcism as it’s been announced that he has exited The Exorcist: Deceiver. It’s not exactly surprising given the negative reception that The Exorcist: Believer received, but this means that the sequel will be pushed back as Universal and Blumhouse search for a new director.
The Exorcist: Deceiver was originally slated to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but the sequel has been taken off the schedule. After a disappointing box-office opening, the word on the street was that the sequels would likely be reworked; after all, the studios did spend $400 million to acquire the rights to the trilogy. The Exorcist: Believer ended its theatrical run with $137 million; not bad for a $30 million budget, but hardly what Universal was expecting from the return of a major horror franchise.

The problem here is that Believer got the reboot trilogy off to a shaky start, the film flopping with critics and failing to make a huge splash at the box office. Gordon...

David Gordon Green is no longer directing Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: Deceiver, the sequel to The Exorcist: Believer. A search is underway for a new director.
The movie was originally set for an April 18 2025 release, but Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael just took over that date, a project which Universal has overseas distribution.
As such, The Exorcist: Deceiver‘s theatrical date is now unset.
Green is currently busy with the Ben Stiller movie Nutcrackers, as well as the fourth season of the HBO comedy series The Righteous Gemstones.
Universal and Blumhouse bought the Exorcist franchise rights for a trilogy from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for an exorbitant $400M. However, things didn’t go as planned at the box office with the first movie, with The Exorcist: Believer opening to a soft $26.4M domestic and grossing $65.5M U.S./Canada, $136.2M WW.

The rebooted Exorcist franchise has hit another dramatic crossroads as Universal and Blumhouse search for a new director.
David Gordon Green is departing the sequel to The Exorcist: Deceiver as he focuses on his production of Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller, as well as season four of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones.
The Exorcist: Deceiver was set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but is now unset. Instead, Universal will use that date to handle the international rollout of Lionsgate’s Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic Michael.
Last year, Green’s The Exorcist: Believer was a major disappointment at the box office. Universal shelled out a huge $400 million for rights to the iconic horror franchise and planned a trilogy of films. Believer topped out at $136.2 million globally, including just $65.5 million domestically.
Ahead of its release, Green himself cast doubt on his return.

Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
As of this writing, actress Linda Blair has appeared as Regan MacNeil in three of the six extant "Exorcist" feature films. She was only about 13 when she appeared in William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" in 1973, and returned in 1977 to reprise her role in John Boorman's truly terrible "Exorcist II: The Heretic." Blair then sat out the three following sequels and prequels, returning in 2023 for a cameo in David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer." In that film, Regan only appeared at the very end of the film to comfort her elderly mother Chris (Ellen Burstyn) who has been blinded by a demon earlier in the picture. One might also want to count Blair's excellent comedic performance in the 1990 farce "Repossessed" as an official "Exorcist" appearance. Her character was named Nancy Aglet, but everything else in that film synchs up with Friedkin's original film.

Ben Stiller has found his first starring role in several years in David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers. More details here:
Ben Stiller has signed on to star in David Gordon Green’s next project, titled Nutcrackers, as reported by Deadline. Stiller will also be producing the film through his production company, Red Hour Films.
Nutcrackers is currently in production in Ohio, but this is the first we’re hearing about it. Green has been busy rebooting the Halloween and The Exorcist franchises, the latter which will keep him busy until the release of The Exorcist: Deceiver, the sequel to this year’s The Exorcist: Believer, in 2025.
Stiller has recently been focusing on work behind the camera. The Zoolander actor executive produced and directed six of the nine episodes of the first season of Severance for AppleTV+ recently and also directed all episodes of Escape at Dannemora for Showtime. Stiller hasn...

Amazon listings had previously said that The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read Here), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, wouldn’t be reaching physical media until July of 2024, but thankfully that’s not the case. The movie is available on PVOD – you can buy it from Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link – and will be available to watch through the Peacock streaming service as of December 1st. But if you’re holding out for physical media, you’ll only have to wait until December 19th for The Exorcist: Believer to get its 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release.

The latest Exorcist film is going to try and win more people over when it arrives on physical media in January 2024: more here.
Plaudits were hardly being thrown in the direction of The Exorcist: Believer when it landed on cinema screens in the autumn. The hope for those behind it was that the union of horror house Blumhouse and a classic horror franchise would yield Halloween levels of box office.
That, though, did not happen. Instead, the reviews at best for The Exorcist: Believer could generously be described as on the testing side (including this one). Directed by David Gordon Green (who was coming off the back of the last Halloween trilogy), the films are said to have been a $400m investment for Universal Pictures, with a trilogy planned.

Peacock announced on Friday that The Exorcist: Believer, the first in a new trilogy of films based on the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, will debut exclusively on the platform on December 1, there joining titles like The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy’s, among many others.
Hailing from Universal and Blumhouse, Believer introducers viewers to Victor Fielding, who, since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

The “Black Phone” is ringing again.
Universal and Blumhouse have announced a sequel to the 2022 horror film, “The Black Phone,” set for June 27, 2025. The companies say “The Black Phone 2” is the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The original movie starred Ethan Hawke, as a child abductor and murderer called the Grabber, and Mason Thames, a 13-year-old boy named Finney who crosses the killer’s path. The Grabber locks Finney in a soundproof basement, where nobody can hear him or come to his rescue. The only item is the basement is a disconnected telephone that begins ringing. When Finney answers it, he realizes he’s able to communicate with the spirits of the Grabber’s deceased victims. The kids’ ghosts teach Finney how to survive and fight back, and he’s able to escape the Grabber’s clutches in the end.

Taylor Swift has been garnering the lion's share of attention at the box office over the last couple of weeks, with her blockbuster "Eras Tour" concert film topping the charts for two weekends in a row. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon," had a massive global rollout this past weekend, resulting in a $44 million debut for the master filmmaker. But "The Exorcist: Believer" has been -- somewhat quietly -- chugging right along and has now passed a pretty major milestone. Director David Gordon Green's revival of the legendary horror franchise has passed the $100 million mark worldwide. That's good, even if the overall picture is still a bit murky. We'll get to that.
First, let's look at the smaller picture, focusing specifically on this movie and what it's managed to do thus far. "Believer" has earned $107.6 million worldwide through three weekends, per The Numbers, including $5.7 million in its most recent frame.

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, didn’t go over well with critics or the general audience… which pretty much makes it a typical Exorcist movie, because none of these movies – other than the original The Exorcist and Exorcist III – are very popular, even among the horror crowd. It has managed to pull it more than $107 million at the global box office since being released earlier this month – and now it has been announced that it’s going to be reaching PVOD tomorrow, October 24th!

Over the weekend, David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel The Exorcist: Believer passed a big milestone at the worldwide box office, officially crossing the $100 million landmark.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer has thus far scared up a total of $107.5 million in its 17 days of release, $54.2 million of which was made here in the United States.
For the sake of comparison, Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends, the final part of a trilogy of legacy sequels, finished its worldwide run with $104.3 million last Halloween season.
The reported production budget for The Exorcist: Believer was in the ballpark of $30 million, meaning it’s likely turning a profit in theaters. The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, so it’s a bit complicated to measure the success of this one.

It’s safe to say that David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer hasn’t received the best reviews, but what does John Carpenter think?
Before helming The Exorcist: Believer, David Gordon Green directed the Halloween trilogy, which found him working with original Halloween director John Carpenter. While speaking with The Los Angeles Times, Carpenter was asked for his thoughts on Green’s new Exorcist movie, and while he hasn’t seen it yet, he is aware that it wasn’t as successful as one would hope.
“I like what David did when he made the three ‘Halloweens.’ I loved No. 2 [Halloween Kills],” Carpenter said. “Thought that was fabulous. I heard ‘The Exorcist’ really didn’t cut it. That could be a kickass movie. I don’t understand how you can screw that up.” To be fair to David Gordon Green, The Exorcist franchise has screwed up a few times,...

An Exorcist sequel being poorly received isn’t anything new. Aside from the original film and The Exorcist III, these are not very popular films, with Exorcist II: The Heretic often coming up as one of the worst sequels ever made. (You can see our ranking of the Exorcist movies Here.) So the fact that the newly released The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link) isn’t going over well with critics or the general audience isn’t much of a surprise. It is, however, a disappointment for Universal Pictures, since they and the Peacock streaming service forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels from Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green, a team the studio and streamer had just worked with on a trilogy of Halloween sequels. Director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer is set to be the first film in a planned trilogy from Blumhouse and Universal, part of a $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen. But after the box office under-performance of Believer, and reviews slamming the film almost across the board, are those original plans still in place?
Last we heard, The Exorcist: Believer will first be followed by The Exorcist: Deceiver, which has already been dated for theatrical release on April 18, 2025. We assumed David Gordon Green would return to direct all three movies in the franchise – much like he did with Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy – but that may not actually end up being the case.

One of the biggest horror movies of the year hit theaters over the weekend in the form of "The Exorcist: Believer." Yes, it was a week earlier than initially anticipated, as Universal and Blumhouse had to make room for Taylor Swift's forthcoming blockbuster concert film. But still, director David Gordon Green's revival of the iconic horror series, which is to be the beginning of a new trilogy, topped the charts in its debut. That's a good thing. Unfortunately though, Universal Pictures bet very big on this franchise, and that may come back to bite them.
Looking at "Believer" divorced of the larger picture, it performed pretty well in the early going. According to The Numbers, the film took in $27.2 million, easily taking the number one spot at the box office. That was slightly below industry projections, with opening predictions pegged at $30 million or more ahead of the weekend.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now, The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here), and for the first time in the franchise Ellen Burstyn reprises the role of Chris MacNeil, the character she played in the 1973 classic The Exorcist. Her presence has been a major selling point in the marketing of this movie – but there’s another returning cast member who makes a brief appearance in the film. We heard months ago that Linda Blair (who was also in Exorcist II: The Heretic) would be showing up in The Exorcist: Believer, and during an interview with People magazine director David Gordon Green talked about reuniting Burstyn and Blair for “a beautiful moment”.
Green told People, “It was just a really special moment to be a part of that reunion, to be a part of that legacy, the connection that’s so monumental that the two of those performers have.

Even as The Exorcist: Believer gets panned by critics and looks to be one of the craziest gambles ever by a movie studio – Universal shelled out $400 million for the rights – director David Gordon Green may avoid helming the rest of the planned trilogy. But his decision may have less to do with its reception than just how he operates.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Gordon Green said it’s quite possible that he’ll get sucked into another project instead of directing more Exorcist movies. “My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled… But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.” He added, “One of the things that’s been really great between these...

50 years after "The Exorcist" first hit theaters, does the franchise still have what it takes to make audiences' heads spin? Universal Pictures and Peacock will certainly be hoping so, after spending an eye-watering $400 million on the rights to a new "Exorcist" movie trilogy. The first installment, "The Exorcist: Believer," has now landed in theaters earlier than expected, after being moved up from its originally planned Friday the 13th release date.
"The Exorcist: Believer" will easily claim the No. 1 spot this weekend, as the biggest new release in theaters. Per Variety, director David Gordon Green's film grossed $11.9 million on its opening day, including $2.85 million in previews, and is heading for an estimated $28 million opening weekend. That's lower than earlier optimistic projections, which pointed to a debut north of $30 million. Nearly 50 years after William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” landed in theaters to leg out a run as the highest-grossing feature of 1973, a new sequel to it is opening on top of the box office. Universal’s “The Exorcist: Believer” compelled audiences to the tune of an $11.9 million opening day from 3,663 locations, a number including $2.85 million in previews.
The Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment production should have no trouble taking the top spot through the weekend, though “Believer” now looks to be debuting lower than its more optimistic projections, which had forecast a $30 million gross over the three-day frame. The horror entry should take in around $28 million through Sunday.
The film is also doing much less business than director David Gordon Green’s last spin on a classic horror franchise at Blumhouse; his 2018 “Halloween” became a smash hit with a $76 million debut. “Believer” also won’t be matching the 1973 original’s run,...

This post contains spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
Ever since Father Merrin and Father Karras entered Regan MacNeil's bedroom to perform an exorcism at the conclusion of 1973's "The Exorcist," the endings to each entry within the "Exorcist" franchise have been a point of controversy and contention. In the first film's instance, the priests losing their lives during the exorcism made a lot of audience members and critics confused as to the message of the movie, with writer William Peter Blatty observing that "at that point in the movie, most of the audience is a little out of it." Blatty would run into other ending issues while making "Exorcist III" in 1990, where he was forced to reshoot and add an exorcism sequence into a film that was never intended to have one. As for what's going on during the hectic finales of "Exorcist II: The Heretic," "Exorcist: The Beginning," and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The Exorcist: Believer,” now playing in theaters.
After 50 years, “The Exorcist” franchise is back with “The Exorcist: Believer,” and it returns with some familiar faces.
It was announced early on that Ellen Burstyn, who played Chris MacNeil in the original “Exorcist,” would reprise her role in “The Exorcist: Believer,” which is the start of a brand new trilogy. All three movies will be helmed by director David Gordon Green, who recently rebooted the “Halloween” franchise with its own trilogy and brought back horror icon Jamie Lee Curtis to star.
It seemed inevitable that Green would bring back some of the legacy characters for his new “Exorcist” trilogy, and there was one surprise cast member that wasn’t announced ahead of time: Linda Blair, who played possessed preteen Regan MacNeil in the original “Exorcist.”

What an excellent day for an exorcism… again. For the first time in nearly twenty years, The Exorcist franchise has returned to the big screen with The Exorcist: Believer, which is expected to be the first of a brand-new trilogy. The new film serves as a direct sequel to the 1973 original and features the return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil.
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter on his own,” reads the official synopsis for The Exorcist: Believer. “But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

As he was finishing up his Halloween sequel trilogy, David Gordon Green was ready to take another left turn in a career full of left turns, but then Jason Blum tempted him with the idea of giving The Exorcist (1973) its own sequel trilogy treatment.
In 2021, Universal and Peacock reportedly paid $400 million for the rights to the storied horror franchise that the late great William Friedkin kicked off alongside Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller and Max von Sydow. Green’s legacy sequel revolves around the parents of two possessed teenage girls (Lidya Jewett and Olivia O’Neill), as they turn to Chris MacNeil (Burstyn) for help in dealing with the demonic foe that took control of her now-estranged daughter, Regan (Linda Blair), in the 1973 film.
Green currently has outlines for the next two chapters of his Exorcist sequel trilogy, and while he once had plans to co-write and direct all three chapters,...
