"Theatricality" is another musically funny and touching episode of "Glee"
tavm16 October 2010
In this episode of "Glee": Principal Figgins tells Tina to stop dressing as a Goth because he has issues with what that entails. When Quinn, Mercedes, and Rachel spy on Shelby's glee team-Rachel decides to finally confront Shelby about being her daughter. Since Shelby is inspired by Lady Gaga, Will has the girls (and Kurt) also do one of her songs in such-like costumes. Finn, Puck, and the rest of the boys decide to dress and perform like KISS in response. And when Finn finds out his mother and Kurt's father are moving in together-meaning Finn and Kurt may also live together-he has mixed feelings...This was another musically entertaining and dramatically touching episode of "Glee" especially when Kurt's father stood up for his son when Finn said a certain word and when Rachel and Shelby came to the conclusion that though they'll never really be like mother and daughter, they will still respect each other as equals in musical talent as evidenced by their first official duet here (as opposed to the "dream" one they had previously). Great songs from both the Gaga and KISS catalogue, not to mention the title song from the Broadway musical "Funny Girl" as interpreted by the great Idina Menzel at the beginning of this episode. Only two more to go before the first season finale. Can't wait!

Kurt & Finn

Warning: Spoilers
I must say that this episode left me with mixed feelings. I LOVE "Glee" and I have never been disappointed completely but, I think the writers missed the mark on this one. The situation that has Kurt and Finn sharing a room really bothered me. I completely sympathized with Finn's reluctance and I just can't imagine what their parents were thinking with these sleeping arrangements. Making Finn the bad guy here because he says he is uncomfortable is flat wrong. Kurt was obviously strongly attracted to Finn and, just as obviously, Finn wanted no part of it. I think that Finn has as much right to be his macho self as Kurt has to be himself. By making Finn out to be homophobic under these extreme conditions is very annoying. I just don't think it was fair. By the way, I am a gay dude.

More Kurt and Finn
mekias1 June 2010
The situation with Kurt and Finn being made to room together was rather outlandish. The parents probably thought it could work since they were in Glee Club and were friends. But they didn't know that Kurt was in love with Finn. Obviously that would have made a big difference in their decision.

While Finn became excessively angry and hurtful, Kurt almost forced this kind of reaction from him. He showed remarkably little empathy or tact in his decision making regarding the living arrangements and never once considered Finn's feelings. He simply would not back off and kept forcing the issue until Finn exploded.

That being said, the father's reaction was also completely understandable. He didn't know all that had been leading up to the argument. All he knew was that his son was being hurt and he retaliated. However, if the father was being forced to live with a gay guy who kept making advances on him, I doubt he would handle the situation better.

So while I believe the majority of the confrontation was Kurt's fault, I felt that all involved were at least a little in the wrong. I do credit the writers for being true to the characters though. Kurt was in love and seeing the object of his affections so close, he got blinded and missed the obvious signs. Finn got backed into a corner and retaliated harshly and the father only wanted to protect his son.

Kurt and Finn

Why so hard on Kurt? Everyone is assuming the "sexual tensions" between Kurt and Finn were Kurt's "fault." Just like Rachel's crush on Finn or Will's crush on Emma were their faults.

Kurt's a kid and however he's behaved (which so far has been purer than many of the rest of the cast) didn't deserve the homosexual panic that Finn displayed and the father rightly jumped on him.

In my family, whatever you thought of homosexuals, you didn't call them names, even behind their backs, so I'm comfortable with the lesson here, and uncomfortable with the high horse this episode has put everyone on.

I'll be looking for all the posters' outrage on Santana's bedding Finn and trying to ruin the Glee club by taking away his virginity.

FATHER KNOWS BEST!

Warning: Spoilers
Phenomenal! While it's rare that we see a father defend his gay son, Kurt's father did it in a spectacular way.

Earlier in the season, Kurt's father didn't exactly embrace his son's sexuality, but his telling Finn off after the uproar in the basement, shows that Kurt does have a good father.

Finn coming around at the end of the episode made this a lesson for all about how to change from minimal tolerance, to embracing another's lifestyle.

Well...

Warning: Spoilers
If I hear one more person call Poker Face's arrangement odd, I'll internet slap them. If you haven't heard Lady GaGa actually sing it like that yet, you are missing out. It's a brilliant version of it, and it was a perfect song for Lea and Idina to sing together.

That being said, I really liked this episode. I didn't feel so bad for Kurt, like most people did though. I felt worse for Finn, because Kurt was creating this problem. And, eventually, they'll show us on the show what happened after that.

I think it was a nice episode. Beth is now up there on my top Glee songs. Wonderful addition.
