Caligae are open boots worn by the Roman Legionaires prior to the time of the emperors through a couple centuries thereafter. Since they are open to reduce foot sweating and improve drainage when crossing streams they can be mistaken for sandals. They are adjustable and a good pair can be quite comfortable which is important for a long march. The double soles are studded for durability.

Thanks to all of you noble ones for supporting my work during this difficult situation with youtube. You are the best. I watched the first episode of Cleopatra on Netflix, and it's much worse than I had expected.
