Caligae are open boots worn by the Roman Legionaires prior to the time of the emperors through a couple centuries thereafter. Since they are open to reduce foot sweating and improve drainage when crossing streams they can be mistaken for sandals. They are adjustable and a good pair can be quite comfortable which is important for a long march. The double soles are studded for durability.
