Horror movies use different tropes to scare the audience, with the most obvious of them being jumpscares that are waiting for a viewer around the corner together with a loud nasty sound. However, some genre’s staples manage to creep you out and haunt your mind without using this technique.
Here are 7 inventive, yet extremely frightening horrors, handpicked by Redditors.
1. Sinister (2012)
First comes Ethan Hawke’s supernatural flick, following a disgraced true-crime writer, who finds films depicting relentless murders in his new house.
It’s notorious for having “one of the scariest soundtracks ever” made for a movie , as voiced by @BD_Sanchez.
2. Rec (2007)
This Spanish movie is truly a gem of the subgenre of found footage horrors. It centers on a reporter following the exploration of an infection spreading inside a dark apartment building and the aftermath of a quarantine introduced for its inhabitants.
3. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The last 70 years of science fiction, horror, and fantasy wouldn't just look remarkably different without the works of Richard Matheson, they'd be comparatively barren. Okay, this is a touch hyperbolic, but only a touch! Yes, we'd still have the transporting, thought-provoking works of maestros like Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and so many others, but could you imagine living in a world sans such essential tales as "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "I Am Legend," "Hell House," and dozens upon dozens of eerily prescient (or just straight up horrifying) short stories? And these weren't just spellbinding reads. They formed the basis for many memorable movies, and, perhaps most influentially, 16 unforgettable episodes of "The Twilight Zone."
Countless writers and filmmakers have cited Matheson as crucial to their development as genre storytellers (Stephen King considers "Hell House" to be "the scariest haunted house novel ever written"), and you could argue that...

Every once in a while, an actor will come on the scene with impact, impressing everyone with a powerhouse debut performance. But sometimes a great freshmen performance fails to lead to a good follow up, and the person who made the impressive debut starts to fade from the scene. It’s always sad when such potential is unmet. Here are 10 actors who started with a bang but faded with a whimper.
Heather Donahue (The Blair Witch Project-1999) She came on the scene in a big way, starring in the low-budget hit film that became such a sensation and started the ‘hand-held-camera’ style of film making (Used in Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and others). She seemed poised to be the new Jamie Lee Curtis, the horror film “it girl”. She got a lot of offers to do other horror films but turned them down, in order to prevent type casting. Since then,...

Usually here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews, we stick mainly to the business of spotlighting horror film features, both short and feature length. However, whenever we think a worthwhile endeavor comes along, we just got to spotlight it. From the creative mind of micro budget horror filmmaker Chris Lamartina (President's Day) comes The Lost Trailer Park: Never Coming Attractions.
So what is "Lost Trailer Park: Never Coming Attractions"?
Chris Lamartina It's the pet project of Chris Lamartina and writer Jimmy George (frequent co-writer and co-producer). Once a month, Chris Lamartina will be producing a trailer (movie preview) for a non-existent feature-length movie. Most of the time for campy tongue-in-cheek horror flicks, but not always. If it falls into the category of exploitation or grind house flicks, then it's definitely fair game.
The trailers are just that, exercises in short form content. Chris Lamartina takes the best parts of a proposed...

Michael Hoffman Jr. and wife Meghan Jones were looking to reinvent the classic "The Slumber Party Massacre" or "Sorority House Massacre" sub-genre of films. Well, looking at the behind the scenes pics from the film, so far to date, they have come up with at least one new cliche or invention for the horror genre-
The Shawn C. Phillips death scene
Shawn C. Phillips is an indie actor who has been in a wide variety of horror films (President's Day, Witch's Brew, Hell House, Deadly Dares: Truth or Dare Part IV, Red River), but one thing always seems to be a constant in those films. Claude Miles is a Louisville, Ky based filmmaker who has worked in various capacities on several independent films as well as some fan productions. He also inherited Kentucky's longest-running science fiction convention. His film work includes Saucer Sexodus, Major Power and the Robot From Saturn, and Cornball Classics. I've been keeping an eye on him for years, and I've noticed that he is getting progressively busier. So I had to have a chat with him.
Liam K: You work on films in various capacities. Was that the plan all along, or did you find yourself getting involved on different levels along the way?
Claude Miles: Inevitably Independent Film requires that you wear a lot of hats. For example, as an actor I have always done my own stunts. My plan has always been to act, but I try and throw in to help in other ways if I can.

Shawn C. Phillips is one of the hardest working indie actors out there racking up a number of film credits in the past few years. Comparsions to another hard working indie actor, Joel D. Wynkoop are unavoidable due to how frequently he works within the horror genre. You can catch Shawn in President's Day which is due for release on DVD/Blu-Ray in early 2011 and Assault of the Sasquatch which comes out in Oct. In the meantime, check out what Shawn had to say about his career.
So who is Shawn C. Phillips and what are you all about?
Well I'm 24 years old who is an avid movie collector and Actor. Ive been collecting films all my life and started acting in feature films in 2008. I also have a following on the YouTube channel Coolduder where I do DVD updates which are reviews of what films I have bought as...
