That incredible feeling, it's all here.
michaelisking-6622616 February 2023
Everyone I'm sure will have high hopes just like me. But before we get into the details, let's talk about the feeling. It all comes back and if you're like me those feelings go way back. To the beginning. The very first season. Sitting on the floor in the den, so excited for each episode. It was the best thing in the world. Well, all these many many years later not only am I older, not only are we older, but the crews of the Enterprise, their families... all off us, older too. What doesn't get old? The feelings, the excitement, the anticipation. This first episode delivers. Can't wait for the next episode! It doesn't have to be perfect. This first episode wasn't. They don't have to be a 10 out of 10. The feelings and the joy, the thrill of these strange new worlds is still there. That's enough for me.

The adventure continues. So do our lives. Make it so.

Keep your expectations in check until you have proof..
infinitezer016 February 2023
Star Trek: Picard has a history of doing this thing where it establishes what might be considered an intriguing premise in its first episode, but then swerves afterward. I'm still a little hesitant to put my heart in it for fear of getting hurt again. In this season, if you look beyond the surface level you may find some intriguing hints at a conspiracy. However, at this time it doesn't make a lot of sense, at least in the world of Star Trek I once knew. It is, thankfully this time appearing to take place in space and promising to show more of the original timeline with the cast I grew up with. I still just don't think it feels like Star Trek TNG, in either structure, how it's written, or directed. It does kind of feel like one of The Next Generation movies. The jury is still out though on whether they can craft a season that carries the legacy properly. Despite the high critical reception, I'm not so quick to praise it.

The Picard previously hoped for
EntropyFashion16 February 2023
Too early to say but the first episode of season 3 seems like what this show should've started with. This has promise. Darker but not farcical and like Better Call Saul deepening the Breaking Bad world, this does the same for TNG.

I really pray this doesn't devolve into Discovery territory. ( I'd rather that show never existed) There seems to be some stakes here knowing it's the final season and that increases the anticipation and tension organically instead of exposition and galactic doom.

Last season was an odd one and I already miss Q but it's good to see the TNG folks finally seeming to be the way you might have expected.

Forget Season 1 and 2. Start here
cfauteux18 February 2023
This is how you properly bring The Next Generation into the future. Some fun banter and references, great music cues. Fantastic visual effects and sound design. I'm not sure if they can keep this up for the duration of the season but this is such a great start. The previous seasons also had pretty decent first episodes so I am weary but optimistic because the new show runners seem to get it. There are a few scenes that are taken straight from older Trek movies like when they leave space dock and my god I had the chills. Only concern is the Raffi subplot. She doesn't do it for me. Never has. I know they'll tie her into Seven and their relationship but I just don't care. Bring on the rest of the season!!

1st Episode of Season 3 - Surprisingly good start
dominikleicht16 February 2023
After Season 1 and 2, I was ready to drop Picard...bad written characters, the main protagonist mainly a bystander in his own show. Strange and unlogical story development (even for Sci-Fi), just not a series I could enjoy as a Star Trek fan (same with Discovery, after Season 2 - I dropped it, because the overemotional, overexpressed characters and cringy dialogues drove me crazy). Strange New Worlds was a mixed bag, but many episodes were decent - a positive trend. Not even wanting to watch Picard Season 3, I gave myself a push - after watching the episode I can say I am positively surprised. Apparently, many of the producers of Season 1 and 2 are not involved anymore, which is in my opinion the best decision they could have made to save the series. Not to spoil anything, it feels like a TNG movie and not as rushed and confused as previous seasons of Picard. Overall more mature. Still quite dark (more like ST Nemesis, ST First Contact). The new writing and directing staff seem to actually like the Star Trek franchise and its characters. Some fan service in the episode as well, but that is to be expected. Based on this episode it gives me hope that Picard and the TNG crew finally get a decent and well-deserved send-off with this last season. This season could actually be the Star Trek Picard the fans have been waiting for since season 1. Let's see if the upcoming episodes can keep up. I will update the rating when the season has progressed.

Even better than the real thing
marianciobanutheoriginal18 February 2023
First, i want to say i like Strange New World, but, i swear to Almighty God, the first thing i crossed my mind after i saw this episode was, i cannot belive this is a fake trek (new trek era), it looks even better than the many of the movies, and it feels just like Star Trek used to be, but even better, it is dark enough and full with funny moments, good writing and good acting and for the first time, the uniforms and the sets don't look like something cheap, made just to please the old fans and grab quick money. Probably the only thing i miss is La Sirena, Rios and Elnor, which were more pleasant than Raffi. I've heard this season is great, from the reviews of the most ruff fans who had the opportunity to saw the whole season and believe me, they cried when they made the reviews and from what i've heard there are even more good episodes in this season. Maybe this is the renaissance of the real Star Trek we used to love.

A return to Berman era!
theunitepodcast16 February 2023
I have to say having watched the first Episode of Picard season 3 and having an understanding of the wider context of what has gone into making Picard season 3, the first episode made me genuinely feel I was watching a sequel to post Nemesis. The visual continuity, storytelling, musical ques are very much part of the DNA of Berman era and classic Trek. Yes the sets are bit dark for my liking, but the fact that the world I was immersed in regarding the first episode, made me believe I was watching a sequel to Berman era trek for first time since Enterprise. I really hope Terry Matalas is given the reins to future shows.

It's actaully really good now ! Comparing to seasons 1-2 its like night and day !
martinsmarkss16 February 2023
Wow... This is how they should have rebooted the Star Trek franchise TV shows in the first place! It's really like meeting old friends again you haven't seen for years! Beautiful shots, beautiful music, and characters also are now much much better! I absolutely love the new captain he is the best new NuTrek character! It has interesting mysteries and emotions! Stakes this time seems really much higher, visually it's also nice now, seems better lit! I have high hopes ! It's also pretty funny now as well! I can praise how good the first episode was all day long but. You definitely need to see it for yourself - I highly recommend it! Picard season its a surprise to be sure but a welcome one!

Strong first episode
MiloSuperSpesh16 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Captures the old buddy dynamic of picard and riker, bodes well for the rest of the season.

Picard and riker are like the old guard, religated to the past and cast aside for a 'new generation' of star fleet,

beverly is under attack by unknown aliens with a mysterious passenger (tho you can probably guess who), she then sends a message to picard on his old communicator for ' secrecy'.

Good paced opener doesn't throw too much at the viewer jsut a taste of what is too come.

Music awesome, mostly tng remixes but still good, evoking feels and emotions,

direction pretty good, acting everyones on point, costumes a slightly updated uniform tho i feel the aliens where lacking a budget they look like 5 dollar halloween masks / scream rejected designs.

Would have been an 8, but...
davewhitscott23 February 2023
This episode would have easily scored an 8, but there was one major flaw. Actually, it's a flaw in every episode of Star Trek Picard...it's the character (and actress playing) Raffi. The character is not just dull, but painstakingly so. Every scene with Raffi brings down the believability that Picard would actually tolerate her. Flawed? Sure, but annoyingly so. It's like Wesley was reincarnated as this character. And then there's the portrayal of this character. Stilted and yet overly dramatic. It's like first year undergraduate acting school. How this character hasn't evolved with so many writers is a mystery.

Uh, A Great Big Wow Here!!!
Maxax7775 March 2023
This is really quite good. Best Star Trek show I've seen in a long time - and for that matter - it's also been a long time coming!!! It's kind of like a 9 hr Next Generation Movie!!! It's sooooo good to see everyone back together again. And most of the cast is 70 or older! Very impressive and super fun. It's soooo good, I hate that it's just going to be a one season run.

Anyhow - the action is great - and ALL of the characters have evolved since their last outing. It's a well made show - and I'm really enjoying it. Sad that this is the final swan song for The Next Generation crew - but it's fantastic that they all came together for one last run!

"Divert all power to the warp core" need i say more. I hope these writers never ever write Star Trek again.
blogsg122 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Divert all power to the warp core" need i say more. I hope these writers never ever write Star Trek again. In the first few seconds of season 3 we get stupid lines like this. You just sent power back to the power source why? You took it away from weapon, shields why? Because divert power is something they say in Star Trek. I so glad this is the last one. I done with this could even finish season two. Looks like I'm not even going to get past the first episode. Raffie or what ever her name is is back for some reason can't stand her. Nice to see the old crew but this is just a nostalgia nothing more.

Season 1&2 were trash. Season 3 is fantastic!
jchapman01-446-2140020 February 2023
Seasons 1 & 2 were utter trash. Embarrassingly so. However, miraculously Season 3 is fantastic so far. Things could tailspin, but Terry Matalas (season 3 show runner) was a writer for Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise, and it shows.

Picard finally acts like Picard. Riker is even better than he was in TNG, Crusher was a sight for sore eyes. Loved seeing Seven finally in Starfleet Uniform and even Rafi was tolerable. Fingers crossed they do something redeeming with her this season.

I'm buying this the moment it lands in Blu-ray to sit alongside my Star Trek Next Generation Blu-ray collection and I'm considering it a direct sequel.

Do yourself a favor and skip seasons 1 & 2 if you plan to watch, and start with this season. You won't regret it.

Loved everything about this episode
critic-97-41765717 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, just wow!

The look, the sound, the cinematography... all speaks to a Star Trek motion picture. Just so impressed with how it all looks and feels. Gave me goosebumps.

The dynamics among the characters is top notch. And the storyline so far, mysterious and draws you in. Raffi is out there in her own and you know what she's doing is integral to the Picard/Riker/Crusher adventure. How it all ties in, we will have to see.

The little touches from TNG just ties it all together. Like the Picard recording at the beginning and the 3rd dynasty ceramic sculpture we saw in TNG S6 The Chase.

I remember the writer being interviewed saying this is a 10 hour Star Trek movie. So far so good. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the crew brought in to the fold.

Picard Season 3 best we've seen in 20 years.
fwxwscg4 March 2023
I have seen all episodes thus far of Picard (and everything else Star Trek related). I grew up watching the original cast in movies. Then came along TNG. It was fantastic. TNG, DS9, and Voyager were all favorites of mine. I even liked Enterprise being a Scott Bakula fan. So far the Paramount+ shows haven't been horrible, but also haven't felt like Star Trek. Picard Season 3 looks, sounds, and feels like Star Trek. That's largely due to Terry Matalas. Someone who worked with Rick Berman who learned from the legend himself Gene Roddenberry. It's not like Alex Kurtzman has made bad series, he just has done it his way and not the Star Trek way. Terry Malalas should be more involved with any future Star Trek project, period.

Good...but dark, and Rafi
christianschumann18 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a mostly good start. Story starts ok if I just accept that it is again just a dark revenge, big weapon thing. Would wish for real trek with exploration, science and so on, but if they do it competently, I am ok with it.

What I liked:
  • Picard feels more like Picard
  • Riker is great
  • the two together, it feels right
  • nicer camera work, feels like Trek again
  • music, pace, everything is so much better than S1, S2 or disco
  • it is mostly fun
  • Design in general, very classic all, but with Crushers ship we get something fresh
  • story intriguing, even though elements borrowed from ST2 and 3, but made cleverly

What I didn't like:
  • the Darkness. Is this an environmental message like 'don't waste energy'? I realy hate this and it seems they are doing this because they don't want starfleet to feel primarily like a positive thing
  • Rafi still very annoying. They should have dropped her, or just ger rid of the drug thing and her hectic aggressive behaviour. There might be good therapies in the future, so why not?

  • obviously again a revenge/big thread story. That's all that is left of trek...
  • Shaw is a bit to much of an a**hole for no reason. The double bunk... Really?

  • Neo-Constitution class, stupid name
  • How can the Titan-A be a refit of the old Titan?

  • Titan design is nice, but doesn't fit the time
  • Fire the texture- guy. The blue grills on the warp nacelle look so cheap. Just noise? And the orange Bussards also look bad, should be red
  • lighting/shading of Titan doesn't look realistic
  • Riker kind of embarassing Geordies daughter.

  • shutle bigger than the bridge of Crushers ship. How can something like this still happen?

  • Villain ship again big pointy thing. Please no connection to Nero....

So it is not perfect, but good enough so that I have hope for the season. And they surely played the nostalgia game well. I had fun.

Sight for very sore eyes
martinrobbinsmr19 February 2023
Oh, I didn't know how much I missed the next generation series. I grew up on great stories (usually), and a more optimistic show, no grittiness, that was Babylon 5 , lol.

Great to see old favourites in action again, and a few new faces. I hope this series sees a 'handing of the baton' over to a new next generation crew who have more in common with Kirk/Picard universe than the recent shows.

The ships look well designed I think, and CGI looks decent.

On the whole, I enjoyed this episode and can't wait to see the next one.

I do fear that we won't get a series 4 and this is it sadly, even if it took a while to get back to its roots.

How did Raffi get the La Serena?
XweAponX10 March 2023
From what I remember last season, The Juratiqueen ended up with it. But if you think about it, you will realize exactly what happened. That was not THIS La Serena.

It was too cool of a ship to just have it turn into the Borg queens ship.

I love the film noir style of this episode, and a real mystery developing. It's almost like a combination X-Files episode, and next generation episode. I like that they are bringing in design elements from previous Star Trek shows and films. Lots of Homages.

The design of Crushers ship isvery much like the NX01. And the surprise person that they run into on that ship is using a TOS phaser.

Raffi's entrance into the story is exactly as I would expect it, but there is a nice twist to it.

There is a threat developing that makes the first two seasons appear to be a hotdog roast. And they are taking plenty of time developing this story... even after the second episode, we are scratching our heads.

And, what is that font used in the end credits? I want it...

They have shortened the introduction and teasers, so that there is no longer a full-blown musical introduction, it now goes straight into the episode. I was not expecting Star Trek to ever follow this trend, but it works here. That was the one thing with previous Trek shows, especially next generation and deep space nine both had very long, musical introductions not that the music was not incredible, but it took an additional five minutes for those introductory credits to roll. This way, we get a little bit of that but we get into the story much quicker.

"Annika Hanson's" captain is a true Fekkik, to borrow Farscape Terminology... I don't trust the guy.

This is the second time I have posted this review, if the first review shows up, I will definitely delete one of them.

The senior senior Trekker writes.

To Ganymede and Titan: Yes, sir, I've been around.
southdavid24 March 2023
Despite not feeling particularly positive about the previous two seasons of "Picard" I've dutifully reviewed every episode and, given that this is the final straight, it would feel churlish to stop now. To be fair, the first episodes have felt promising before, only to let me down, but this again was an OK start.

Under attack, Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) sends a coded message to Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) with her co-ordinates and a warning not to trust anyone in Starfleet. Picard enlists the help of his friend Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and the pair organise an inspection of the USS Titan, Riker's former command, now under the stewardship of Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick). Aware of their past adventures, Shaw is unwilling to facilitate any of their subtle requests to get near Crushers location but his second in command, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) is much more willing to accommodate her friends.

It immediately feels much more "Star Trek-y" than the previous two seasons, getting fairly quickly to a real starship, with a bridge, and corridors. The conceit of not trusting Starfleet felt a bit of an artificial impairment, but I guess we'll see what that means as the plot develops. As much as I like Todd Stashwick (which is quite a bit) I'm not sure he fits the straightlaced by-the-book Captain Shaw, again, I'm hoping that we'll end up seeing a more dynamic version of him as the plot opens up.

Alas, we haven't shaken off Raffi with this new story. We initially meet her looking like she's fallen on hard times, but it's not the case and she's operating as an intelligence agent, working with a mysterious handler and investigating the disappearance of portal technology. This would be used in an excellent looking (in terms of visual effect's I feel I should stress) terrorist attack later in the episode.

Again, fool me three times, shame on ... well, both of us, but this start to the third run was pretty good.

THATS the idea!!!
dawsonc-5316116 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well I got to admit I've got some watery eyes - Star Trek is BACK! Again, I should say in Picard as I've liked all I have seen in this show. But for the Prime Universes - BRAVO!

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Now I will admit to not caring too much for stories relying too much on gun play, there was some straight out of the box, I hate American's overuse of firearms as motivation in sequences - but that's me. There's so many other ways of creating a moment without their use, but the show opens on such yet refrains from becoming an over the top shot-em-up for the episode. Hope to continue seeing that restraint - this isn't Star Wars.

The story is setting up now and as this episode unfolded, my exhilaration was palpable. I really felt the world and the people in it are as it should be. Can't wait to see what is coming next.

Music is awesome and well thought out. VFX, Design and Characters and their motivations, all seem consistent with good Trek.

This is the first episode and I am really looking forward to the rest. Bravo!

The first episode of any season is the best but...
hnsnn25 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
... i don't like it, it's worse than the first episode of the first season (= S01E01). Will Riker quickly says that he will help Picard, that's too much easy and consequently boring. Picard come on ship faster than in S01E01. His Romulan "wife" in S03E01 passively let him go, in S01E01 she isn't so passive. In order to prevent going everything to easy, captain of ship Titan is more enemy than friend. I didn't watch other episodes in yet but I bet that Annika and Raffi will join Picard.

As in previous seasons, there are many off-topic events and tasks. Every episode would last up to 20 minutes without them, except the first and the last episode, because these 2 episodes have less off-topic events. For example: is Raffy's work about Red Lady related to Picard's work to find Beverly? Finding and saving Beverly is the main task.

a poor, mediocre effort that doesn't deserve the name Star Trek.
drsamayoa201017 February 2023
First of all I must say that I've been a Star Trek fan for as long as I can remember, and maybe that's my problem, maybe the golden age of Star Trek (from 1966 to 2005) was (and is) too good to be outdone, maybe asking for smart, well-written scripts that let us explore the stars (and the human condition) is too much to ask these days, but this, this episode, just doesn't feel like Star Trek, it feels like a space version of fast and furious, which borrowed the name of one of the most beloved and respected franchises in science fiction. This version of Star Trek feels as cold, as dead, as the heart of a borg. Picard's second season was pretty bad, but I still tried to give this new season a chance, but it was useless, to hope for a return to greatness.

Very nice
GabrielSymes20 February 2023
It's like climbing into your favourite sofa. Familiar faces, space, spaceships, all there in a well trodden format. Patrick Stewart clings on and delivers with gravitas. "Number One" adds aplomb with a slight smirk. Wonderful. But as others have mentioned, series three has started with a bang. I really enjoyed seasons one and two. Three might offer something a little bit special. They've hit their stride and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us on this outing. But as far as this Trekkie is concerned, I am happy to have some quality Star Trek in my viewing schedule, especially one that comes with an option to reminisce.

Finally the Star Trek we deserve
fly60518 February 2023
After 2 anemic seasons, Picard season 3 started with a bang. Bringing back the iconic TNG crew and a promise of return to what Star Trek was always about. A good storytelling, thrilling voyage, self revelations and some proper space action is exactly what the doctor ordered after so many years.

Although this yes the last season and the "swan song" of this wonderful cast in the Star Trek universe (let's face it, age catches up with the best of us) If chapter one is a sign for things to come then this will season will redeem the first two and has to potential to shadow SNW and even Discovery.

Eversince Discovery season 2 ending, I wasn't so excited as I'm now and waiting impatiently for the next chapters of Picard Season 3.

Best thing that happened to Star Trek on the screen in the last 20 years
dobosmateo30 March 2023
Like many of the people wrote it before me, this finally feels like Star Trek through and through. The music, the visuals, the details and the pace it sets. Since the last episode of Enterprise, there wasn't anything on the big or small screen that felt anything like this.

Then comes - to many of us - out of the blue Terry Matalas, and proves decisively that he knows, understands and respects Star Trek and what its legacy should be. Never I have thought, that I'll see another live-action story of Star Trek that'll put me on the edge of my seat...

Terry should be involved in any future Star Trek project.
