“I have got some questions/Filed with discontent,” Cola singer-guitarist Tim Darcy informs us on the Montreal post-punk band’s second album. Cola have their own fun little take on modern alienation. Laying bright, bracing guitars over taut, tetchy, minimalist drums and bass, their sound brings to mind Wire and the very earliest Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. Yet where those bands had the decaying post-industrial England of the 1970s as a backdrop, Cola are products of our own more ambiently dehumanized times. “I’m a fragrant kind of shadow,...

When Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac at the end of 1974, the group set off on a path that made them one of the most commercially successful bands in the world. Nicks and Buckingham’s influence on the group cannot be understated. Their songwriting, vocals, and overall musical talent fit in with the band but also transformed it. It’s hard to imagine the band without them.

Still, Fleetwood Mac existed for years without them. Here are five of the band’s best songs that don’t feature Nicks. Most came out before she joined the band, but one is a classic from Rumours.

The Rembrandts’ ‘I’ll Be There For You’ may be one of the world’s most instantly familiar TV theme tunes, but its success split up the band, amid fears they’d lost everything about them that was cool.
Danny Wilde, one half of the alt-rock duo, told the UK’s Guardian newspaper that the band were initially asked to record a 43-second version of the song for the pilot of Friends – something with the same tempo as R.E.M.’s ‘Shiny Happy People.’
Wilde explained why the band, comprising himself and Phil Solem, were initially reluctant to have their name associated with the sit-com:
“It didn’t have our name on the credits. We were a pretty hip band, so stipulated that we didn’t want anyone to know we’d sold out.”

Unwelcome is a horror movie directed by Jon Wright starring Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth.
A mixture of horror and local bright spots that, as it progresses, stops being “scary” to introduce us to “something else” that, although it will not be that surprising, it is quite interesting.
The creatures that appear will be quite familiar to you (whether or not they resemble the Critters is up to you).
Movie Review Unwelcome (2023)
For a B-movie, it has its merits in some places, especially in terms of cinematography. It knows how to maintain its tone of a fable and coherently interconnect the protagonist landscape with the narrative and the personal dramas of each one. The acting is fine, but no one here is exactly going to win an Oscar.

Before Steven Tyler and Joe Perry became the “Toxic Twins,” they were merely intoxicated. On a newly unearthed demo tape, which is coming out with the regrettably punny title The Road Starts Hear, that Aerosmith cut in 1971 — two years before releasing their self-titled debut — the band sounds loose and lubricated on embryonic versions of “Dream On,” “Mama Kin,” and other ditties they would be performing live for the next 50 years. It’s at once both a sonogram of the band as journeymen and a testament to the vision they had early on,...

A previously unheard recording of “Need Your Love So Bad” — a blues song that late Fleetwood Mac frontman Peter Green sang with the group in its early days — will come out in conjunction with the release of a new book about Green, The Albatross Man, this October. Rolling Stone has a sneak peek of the track this Wednesday.
Green recorded the vocal in his mother’s attic sometime in the mid-Sixties; the more familiar recording of the track came out on Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 LP, The Pious Bird of Good Omen.

Last week, Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie walked back comments to the BBC that the band might tour again, but without Stevie Nicks or John McVie. As she told Rolling Stone, it was a “cheeky answer” to a question about the band’s future and not necessarily true.

An arthouse-orientated Berlin line-up could ultimately reveal some pleasant surprises.
“Apprehension” was the word used by artistic director Carlo Chatrian to describe the mood of the films at the Berlinale 2021. Given the precarious state of the world this pandemic midwinter, that’s possibly the best we could expect as he announced the titles under the gaze of the festival’s stern, bespectacled black bear..
But there was a sense of resilience as well. Chatrian and his co-chief, the festival’s managing director Mariette Rissenbeek, have responded to lockdown constraints with their second selection planted firmly in the European arthouse. It...

The Berlin International Film Festival has set its full slate for the upcoming 2021 edition. Berlinale usually follows Sundance with a February festival, but the pandemic has forced organizers to develop a new festival format for 2021. The 71st Berlin International Film Festival is set to take place with the “Industry Event” from March 1 to 5, which will include the European Film Market (EFM), the Berlinale Co-Production Market, the Berlinale Talents, and the World Cinema Fund in online forms. From June 9 to 20, 2021 the Berlinale will launch a “Summer Special” with numerous film presentations in Berlin, both at indoor and outdoor cinemas.
Included in the March event is the traditional film festival slate, which includes the main Berlinale Competition lineup as well as sidebar sections such as Berlinale Special & Berlinale Series, Encounters, Berlinale Shorts, Panorama, Forum & Forum Expanded, Generation, Perspektive Deutsches Kino, and Retrospective. With the exception of the Retrospective, the films will be shown at the March event.

When Japanese VFX-wizard-turned-director Takashi Yamazaki (“Dragon Quest: Your Story”) tackled “Lupin III: The First” (GKids), the first CG movie in the Monkey Punch Anime franchise, he turned for inspiration to the great Hayao Miyazaki. After all, Miyazaki cut his feature teeth on the franchise’s “The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979), which was Yamazaki’s ’80s introduction to Miyazaki. And, for good measure, Miyazaki continued to make his mark on master thief Lupin by directing two influential TV episodes the following year: “Wings of Death: Albatross” and “Farewell My Beloved Lupin.”
The Oscar-winning Miyazaki (“Spirited Away”) humanized the stylish Lupin in “Cagliostro” by making him a gallant hero as well, rescuing a princess in distress on the way to seizing his treasure. Fittingly, Yamazaki borrowed the theme for “Lupin III: The First” by having Lupin rescue a brilliant archaeologist, Laetitia, in search of a mysterious supernatural artifact that connects both of their ancestries.

Mick Fleetwood has released a new recording and video for “These Strange Times,” as part of his Da*da*ism project.
Originally released on Fleetwood Mac’s 16th studio album Time in 1995, “These Strange Times” was rerecorded by Fleetwood with the addition of a sample of “Albatross,” the classic Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac track, to the last 30 seconds of the song. The rerecorded “These Strange Times” comes with an eight-minute video that traverses the globe, channeling the Earth and human life’s beauties while acknowledging the current struggles (Covid-19, racial injustice,...

If there’s one song that sums up the stoic guitar genius of Peter Green, it’s “Jumping at Shadows,” recorded live in February 1970, at the Boston Tea Party. Green was on top of the world; a 23-year-old rock star leading the London band he founded, Fleetwood Mac. They were the toast of Britain, riding their Number One hit “Albatross.” But “Jumping at Shadows” is a doomy blues ballad, his voice full of wistful dread, his guitar full of delicate pain. “I’m going downhill and I blame myself,” he sings.

Pierce Brosnan is set to star in Youth, the feature film directorial debut from writer/director Brett Marty based on his 2016 short of the same name. Marty, Josh Izenberg and Amelia Whitcomb co-wrote the film adaptation, which is being produced by Jib Polhemus, Paul Schiff, and Martin Brennan.
The pic is set in a future not far from now, where “Renewal” has become the world’s hottest (and most expensive) commodity — a procedure to rewind your body’s biological clock back to its prime. Joel (Brosnan), an ad-tech engineer, is about to retire at age 70, after a lengthy career. Not wanting to lose him, his company pays for him and his wife Alice to Renew — a luxury promising a second chance. Alice emerges from the operation in her 20s, but for Joel, the procedure goes tragically wrong. Rather than make him younger, his aging begins accelerating rapidly, and his remaining years evaporate into mere weeks.

Also featuring a powerful Co-Pro Pitching lineup, packed by pedigree producers and creatives, the Digital Forum’s industry audience, such as the number of accredited distributors, still has to be confirmed.
Some high-profile titles are missing: Opener “The Luminaries,” for example, from Fremantle and Working Title, and HBO closer “Run.” That said, the Buyer’s Showcase looks set to include five of Series Mania’s original 10 main competition entries and 13 of its 15 International Panorama titles, the festival’s two main sections.
Looking to the long-haul, as it also address urgent financial fall-out from Covid-19, the industry needs festival selection more than ever.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a biopic of Sammy Davis Jr. Studio has set Charles Murray to write the script. The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura; fellow musical icon Lionel Richie, latter of whom was instrumental in gathering rights from Sammy Davis Jr’s estate; and Mike Menchel. The movie is based on several resources, among them the singer’s 1965 memoir Yes I Can: The Story of Sammy Davis Jr, which Davis wrote with Jane and Burt Boyar.
Menchel said after they set the project at Paramount under di Bonaventura’s deal, they searched long and hard for the right writer, and eventually found themselves on Murray’s doorstep. Physically, Charles Murray is the polar opposite of the wiry and diminutive film subject, nor would you confuse him with Arthur Murray for that matter. Danny Kirwan, a key force in Fleetwood Mac’s bluesy three-guitar attack of the late ‘60s and as a singer and songwriter on the group’s transitional albums of the early ‘70s, died Friday. He was 68.
No details about his death were immediately available. The band’s founding drummer Mick Fleetwood acknowledged Kirwan’s passing in a statement for the group on his Facebook page Friday evening.
“Danny was a huge force in our early years,” Fleetwood wrote. “His love for the blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years.
“Danny’s true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac…Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!”

"There was nothing normal about the girl. She grew into the oddest of odd balls." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for an indie drama titled This Beautiful Fantastic, written and directed by Simon Aboud. Jessica Brown Findlay (seen in Albatross, Winter's Tale, The Riot Club, Victor Frankenstein) stars as Bella Brown, an awkward, shy young woman who dreams of writing and illustrating a successful children’s book. Described as a "contemporary fairy tale", she encounters her grumpy next door and works to save a garden most of the time. Also starring Andrew Scott, Tom Wilkinson, Jeremy Irvine, Anna Chancellor & Eileen Davies. This actually looks quite good, it reminds me a bit of Amelie. Have a look. "You've heard this story before..." Those are the first words spoken by Daniel Radcliffe's disembodied voice at the start of Victor Frankenstein. This is said to remind the audience of the many film adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, at the same time implying that this version brings something new to the table. Although this iteration does breathe some much-needed freshness into this almost 200-year-old monster story, its glaring flaws keep the film from truly standing out from its predecessors.
What does stand out about this particular story is that it goes beyond Shelley's cautionary tale of what happens when you "play God," focusing more on the relationship between Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) than their creations. James and Daniel have an electric chemistry (no pun intended) and when the story focuses on the two of them working together, the movie truly feels compelling.

It's rarely a fair fight when a Victoria's Secret model is involved... Felicity Jones holds her own in this blue, patterned cocktail frock by design duo Proenza Schouler, but the Albatross actress is no match for Miranda Kerr. The shape of the budding Brit's version of the dress might be slightly to blame. Mrs. Orlando Bloom has on what appears to be a tighter, fit-and-flare take on the underwater-feel fashion. Felicity's style is straight, hence the failed attempt at a tighter waistline with that black skinny belt. We feel like this one goes to Miranda, but what's your say?...
