...but you should run from this film nonetheless
If it wasn't for J. K. Simmons, this film wouldn't have been made. But thanks to nepotism (the director is Simmons' real life wife), we can now enjoy this fine product and lament almost two hours of our lives we won't get back.

At times competently shot, YOU CAN'T RUN FOREVER is a nice borefest of a "thriller" that manages to let you down quite quickly. Starting off mildly intriguing, it loses its grip fast, never to pick it up again. The characters are stupid, infuriatingly so at times, the drama forced and the execution lackluster. In fact, writing and directing go pretty much hand in hand.

And the title seems quite fitting once you see (now elderly) J. K. Simmons running through the woods, as he certainly can't run forever. Oh my.

If you value your time, skip this one. It's nothing but a pretty incompetently told, uninteresting story made by a not-so-talented director who happens to be married to J. J. Jameson's only worthy incarnation.

Some Good Moments, Cinematography & Simmons performance, the rest is downfall painful
kmkevinn-6473318 May 2024
You Can't Run Forever" embarks on a cinematic journey that is as ambitious as it is flawed. The film, directed by Michelle Schumacher, attempts to weave a tale of suspense and survival, yet falls short in execution. The film's saving grace lies in the performance of J. K. Simmons, whose portrayal of the antagonist is both magnetic and menacing. His ability to pivot from an average suburban neighbor to a lunatic with a malevolent smile is commendable. The opening sequence sets a promising stage, with Simmons' character, Wade, displaying a chillingly casual approach to violence that could have been the cornerstone of a gripping thriller. This suffers from a lack of tension and a flat direction that leaves much to be desired. The narrative struggles with tonal inconsistencies, failing to maintain the suspense necessary for a thriller of this nature. The film's pacing is erratic, and the character development is insufficient, rendering the storyline predictable and uninspired. The supporting cast, while competent, is given little material to work with, resulting in performances that feel disconnected from the film's core. The script, co-written by Schumacher and Carolyn Carpenter, misses opportunities to delve deeper into the characters' psyches, opting instead for surface-level interactions that undermine the potential intensity of the plot.

In conclusion, This is a film that had the potential to be a compelling thriller but is ultimately let down by its execution. While it may offer a glimpse of J. K. Simmons' undeniable talent, the rest of the film fails to match his prowess, leading to a viewing experience that is, regrettably, forgettable.

Made for tv movie
TotoReviews21 May 2024
Suffering from acute anxiety, young Miranda faces a new terror when a serial killer chooses her as his next target. As he chases her through the woods, she soon finds the strength she never knew she had to elude her murderous tracker. This was like a channel 5 made for tv movie but with lots of killing. The acting was so bad it was quite enjoyable. Lots of action. A daughter who looked older than her mother. A pregnant mum whose. Prosthetic pregnancy bump Would often turn to a square. Even though cringy annd embarrassing I watched it all. Action from the very start.

The dialogue was Long, pointless and laughable. There was little tension. Incompetent police officers incompetent script.

I love JK Simmons...but.....what the.....
Darkbulb17 May 2024
Clearly he is either in debt or someone has some revealing photos they are using to blackmail him - why else would a good actor like JK Simmons appear in this utter garbage movie?

There is NOTHING good to say about it - I mean even the muzzle flairs represents some of the worst CGI on screen in decades.

I wanted more!
thehijabicourier18 May 2024
J. K. Simmons truly is a remarkable actor with notable performances in various roles like Spiderman and Law & Order. In this film, his portrayal was solid, but the depth of his character left much to be desired. The lack of insight into his motivations, the origins of his actions, and the "does it matter" quote left me wanting more. The absence of background on Miranda's father's passing felt like a missed opportunity for emotional depth. Moreover, the mysterious disappearance of the sheriff added to the unresolved elements of the plot. With more development and better casting choices, especially if J. K. Simmons had taken on the sheriff's role, the movie could have unfolded into something truly exceptional.

What a let down
traceytak17 May 2024
Like others I was lured by the fact J K Simmons is one of the main characters and then I started watching and the nice Irish chap from downton Abbey was also in it, great, good start. Then the good turned into bad pretty quickly. Cue the obnoxious moody teenager that can't act. Empathy for the teenager doesn't even begin. She wanders through the woods acting like she is on acid. She listens to music on her phone and doesn't even think about the battery, surprise ! It gets low. She is not bothered about making any noise even though she knows there is a man with a gun wanting to kill her not far behind. At night she not only talks loudly but also turns on her flashlight. To top it off her sisters friends go out in the dark with 4 flashlights looking for her, knowing there's a man with a gun shooting people and not one of them is carrying a gun. The story is basic and the acting is bad. Simmons says 'why do I waste my time' in one scene and I had to agree with him, it's pretty dire.

It all makes sense...
sashacorrea-9416718 May 2024
Why is J. K. Simmons, a respected and renowned actor, in this pile of cr@p movie? Does he owe back taxes or something? I wondered as I watched this. It turns out it's because his wife wrote and directed the movie. It was nice to at least make sense of that. The acting is horrible, and it's evident almost immediately. To be fair, I really can't tell if it's the fault of the actors or the rigid and horrible dialogue but its likely both. Top it off with comically miscasted police officers who looking like they are in middle school and have the acting chops to match and the end result is a movie that will have you cringing the whole way through.

Pathetically Written & Acted Movie
cniven-6608618 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I even start on how bad this movie is. J. K Simmons had to be desperate for money to even be associated with this dumb film. Common sense had no part in the writing of this.

After a teacher ( played by Simmons) kills his wife and her lover after being caught in bed together, he decides to kill his neighbour. He then steals the lovers motorcycle parked in his driveway .He then randomly shoots 3 people at a gas station leaving a witness to the murders alive who gives a description to the most useless cops . He then comes across a father and daughter who are stopped at the side of the road and pulls a gun. The father drives away and is chased by the gunman. Instead of running the guy on the motorcycle off the road he allows the killer to catch up beside him and shoot him making him run off the road. The movie only gets worse from there with the daughter not using her cell phone to call for help until much later. Leaving a voicemail message for her mother. Her mother who was worried she couldn't contact them does not listen to the voice message until much later. The daughter instead of using the forest to hide while running keeps stopping in the most visible wide open spots possible. Absolutely the worst premise and writing of a movie and I was happy to shut it off.

Decent low budgeter, J.K. Simmons elevates it to watchable
It's a thriller/horror with a psycho (J. K. Simmons) on the loose. A girl gets into his crosshairs and she is the other main character. The story is simple, there is violence and one pretty disturbing scene where not everything is shown but made me kinda sick.

I assume J. K. Simmons is in this due to his wife being the writer/director, he is obviously a notch above other actors.

There is a subplot involving dealing with trauma but the movie doesn't explore it too deeply.

The refreshing part is that the police are incompetent and cowardly just like in real life, instead of the usual glorification.

Who stops to wash their hands when chased by a crazed killer?
motleyqueue21 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Like most who know J. K. Simmons we picked this movie because we enjoy J. K. Simmons & the movies he stars in. He's a fantastic actor. But this movie is so far below his standards we couldn't help but wonder why the heck did he accept the role.

So he plays the role of a psycho killer okay, but it didn't take any special skills. Other than that, there is not one redeeming quality about this movie. After he shoots the dog owner I would have thought the couple in the chairs would have been like gone! But they just sat there & JK calmly saunters over & shoots them both, but allows the woman at the gas pumps to live; she didn't run either, no she squatted down at the pumps, despite his motorbike beside her. And off he goes. He comes across stepdad & his stepdaughter arguing in a car. After he shoots stepdad its time to chase after the step daughter who ran off into the woods (this movie use to be called The Woods I believe). The daughter actually takes time out to stop at a river & wash her arms & hands. Who does that when running scared from a psycho killer? We now know the premise of the movie as JK continues to act like he's some crazed nut with intent to hunt down the girl. Mom chats with the killer & threatens to hunt him down & kill him, like this will scare him off the daughter. There is nothing to keep you on the edge of your seat here, nothing that you don't already know how it's going to end; except to wonder why the heck did JK Simmons accept this role in the 1st place. Oh, and yeah, the group of young volunteers led by sis.. noisy, complaining, stumbling about.. you can hear them from several miles away. And what police force is going to recruit young volunteers to traipse about the woods in the middle of the night for a psycho serial killer? They try to change things up having daughter gobble down some shrooms, saying "I found some more food". She stopped to read the package, it's in big bold print.. she's starving, but she only has her from having just one. She's supposedly starving but only eats one. Of course that's a good thing or else she would have really been screwed. And the ending.. who does that? You're gonna have to watch the whole it all to find out. This movie is out of this world stupid, and not worth the paper it was written on.

Why did Academy Award Winner J. K. Simmons take on the role? Because he's a loving, caring, supportive, & a super husband, super dad, & super brother-in-law; that's all I can figure. His wife co-wrote it & directed it. His brother-in-law was producer, his daughter starred in it, and his son was the composer for the film. That doesn't make it a good film, & certainly not worthy of paying box office fare (or on-demand). If you're really a faithful fan ofJ. K. Simmons, than by all means watch it for free, but don't expect anything of it.

A Cinematic Masterpiece...
scottkolflat21 May 2024
Rating: 10 and I'm totally not paid to say that.

"You Can't Run Forever" is nothing short of a cinematic revelation! This magnum opus, directed by the visionary Michelle Schumacher and penned with extraordinary finesse by Carolyn Carpenter and Michelle Schumacher, is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling.

J. K. Simmons delivers a performance for the ages, blending raw intensity with a depth of emotion that only a true master of his craft can achieve. His portrayal is so compelling, so utterly captivating, that it feels as though he's reaching through the screen to touch the very soul of the audience. Every line he utters, every glance he casts, is imbued with a profound gravitas that elevates the film to unparalleled heights.

Fernanda Urrejola is a revelation. Her portrayal is a symphony of nuanced emotion and unbridled passion, drawing viewers into her character's world with an irresistible force. Urrejola's performance is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, making her a luminous presence in every scene. She brings an authenticity and grace that is simply mesmerizing.

Allen Leech adds another layer of brilliance to this stellar ensemble. His performance is a masterclass in subtlety and charm, providing a perfect counterbalance to the intense drama unfolding on screen. Leech's ability to convey complex emotions with the slightest change in expression is nothing short of genius, making his character unforgettable.

Michelle Schumacher's direction is a triumph of cinematic artistry. Her visionary approach and meticulous attention to detail have crafted a film that is as visually stunning as it is emotionally resonant. Schumacher's ability to extract such extraordinary performances from her cast is a testament to her directorial prowess. The seamless interplay of narrative and visual storytelling she orchestrates is simply awe-inspiring.

The script, co-written by Schumacher and Carpenter, is an exquisite tapestry of brilliant dialogue and gripping narrative. It weaves a story that is as unpredictable as it is profound, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats while delving deep into the complexities of human nature and relationships. The writing is sharp, evocative, and profoundly moving.

"You Can't Run Forever" is a tour de force, a film that will undoubtedly stand the test of time as a hallmark of cinematic excellence. It is a shining beacon in the realm of contemporary cinema, showcasing the pinnacle of what film can achieve when every element aligns in perfect harmony. Bravo to the entire cast and crew for delivering an experience that is nothing short of perfection!

Nice Little Thriller
stevendbeard20 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I saw You Can't Run Forever, starring J. K. Simmons-the Spider_Man movies, The Closer_tv; Isabelle Anaya-The Rookie: Feds_tv, Donny's Barmitzvah; Allen Leech-Downton Abbey_tv, Bohemian Rhapsody and Fernanda Urrejola-The Black Demon, Narcos:Mexico_tv.

This is a nice little thriller that is written and directed by Michelle Schumacher-J. K. Simmons' real life wife-and has J. K. starring in it, as well as his real life daughter Olivia, in a small part. The movie starts with J. K. riding a motorcycle on a country road. When he stops for gas, he sees a man walking a dog and a couple sitting outside the gas station. After gassing up, J. K. pulls out a gun and shoots all 3 people and then rides off. Elsewhere, Isabelle is a teenage girl that found her father after he committed suicide years before, so she is a little on the anxious side-she is on medication. Allen is her new step father, who married her mother, Fernanda. While on a trip to the store, Isabelle and Allen cross paths with J. K. and things go bad quickly. Isabelle escapes on foot into the woods and the chase is on. Anytime Isabelle meets anyone in the woods that could help her, J. K. shoots them. Later, in flashbacks, you learn what set J. K. off in the first place and made him turn into a sociopath.

It's rated R for violence, suicide, drug use, language and sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 42 minutes.

I enjoyed it enough that I would buy it on DVD.

A Film by a the Simmons
nightringer-7684019 May 2024
So, here's the dirty fact:
  • directed and written by Michelle Schumacher, mrs Simmons
  • starred by JK Simmons, the husband
  • costarred by Emily Simmons, the daughter.

No matter how you pook at it, JK Simmons fell from grace by starring in this PoS.

Too many messages written into the film I complain about:
  • the rangers/police written as dumb and bumbers
  • anti-law
  • anti-parenting
  • anti-medical professional
  • teenager did drug

The only saving grace is JK Simmons acting is very commendably good. This, however, is a proof of bad script and bad director can't be saved by good actor.

At least Simmons has something to reply on his nagging wife now.

evil J.K. good
SnoopyStyle30 May 2024
A psychopath (J. K. Simmons) is shooting random strangers for apparently no particular reasons. Troubled teen Miranda (Isabelle Anaya) and her stepfather Eddie encounter him. Eddie is killed while Miranda escapes into the wilderness.

I like me some J. K. Simmons and mass killer J. K. intrigues me. The newbie girl is fine. The counting thing is a little stupid. This is set up for a fine indie thriller. It's nothing big, two main characters and the woods. The first false note is leaving the prego mom alone at home. There is no actual reason why the sketch artist couldn't go to their house. Separating these characters really bugged me until it becomes obvious that they did it for a story reason. It makes the last act ring false. Any shock at the twist is lost by the bad construction.

Waste of TIME!
danongarrett28 May 2024
I encourage you to save yourself the time and energy to watch this aimless movie. This movie was made with little to no sense. Did the professor kill his wife and lover? Why? What was the connection of the professor to Miranda? How did Miranda Mother know who to search for on the internet? Why did he kill Miranda step- father? I mean this movie lacked continuity and flow? Why did the 2 cops appear to be 12 years old leading a criminal investigation of serial killer? What happen to the sheriff? We never saw search party of cops searching for Miranda? How did Miranda step sister go in the woods to find Miranda clues without any incident. These cops never appeared to be in charge or had the authority to ensure trust of the victims I had way too more questions after the movie than I had answered during the movie!

Does it Matter
nogodnomasters28 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Miranda (Isabelle Anaya) has issues that involve a tall tree in the backyard and her deceased father (Randy Gonzalez). They hide this from the audience until there are 20 minutes left in the film for no particular reason. Her mother (Fernanda Urrejola) has moved on and remarried a man (Allen Leech) who has a daughter Emily (Olivia Simmons). Wade Bennett (JK Simmons) is our sociopath killer. We later discover he is Wade Bennett, a teacher who snapped. Miranda is subject to panic attacks. Their lives collide as Miranda is running for her life in the forest.

I thought it was funny when Mom was shown a picture of the killer and claimed he didn't look familiar, apparently having never seen a Farmer's Insurance commercial. Good cast. Our protagonist hated life so much that it was hard to develop an attachment. Just you typical girl hunted in woods film and not that great.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
