Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is clearly one of our finest actors (he’s been nominated ten times in total for various Best Acting and Best Supporting Actor turns). The actor, who has worked with many of the greats, Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Jonathan Demme, etc. is also a very fine director. Washington has directed four feature-length efforts, “Antoine Fisher” (2002), “The Great Debaters” (2007), the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated “Fences”—arguably his biggest of all of them, nominated for Best Picture and winning Viola Davis the award for Best Supporting Actress—(2016) and “A Journal With Jordan,” a movie that kind of came and went in 2021.

Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos, known for his roles in TV series such as “Merlin,” “Outlander” and “Versailles,” is set to play a British ornithologist who, during a field trip to Sicily, gets involved in more than mere birdwatching.
Shooting is underway in Sicily on the indie drama “Hearts of Salt,” the first feature by London-based line producer Rosa Russo. The passion project is structured as a three-way co-production between Italy, the U.K. and Tunisia, with shooting also planned in the North African country. Tunisia will serve as a second location besides the Italian island.
Though plot details are scarce, “Hearts of Salt” will see Vlahos — who will soon be seen opposite Lindsay Lohan in the Netflix rom-com “Irish Wish” — arrive in Sicily on a mission to study the effects of climate change on bird migrations. However, the ornithologist will soon have to abandon his role as a detached observer...

Andrea Riseborough has said that the controversy surrounding her recent Oscar nomination has “deeply impacted” her.
In January, the 41-year-old British actor was a surprising addition to the 2023 Oscar nominees, bagging a nod in the Best Actress category for her leading role in the indie drama To Leslie.
Her nomination followed a run of late-in-the-day endorsements from numerous A-list stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston and Jane Fonda.
It wasn’t long after Riseborough’s triumphant breakthrough that heated debates began around race and privilege in the industry.
Many critics felt that Riseborough’s recognition came at the expense of The Woman King’s Viola Davis and Till’s Danielle Deadwyler, both Black actors who were left out of the Best Actress category.
Others argued that being backed by Hollywood’s elite showed egregious signs of white privilege and cronyism.
Days after the nominations were announced,...

Andrea Riseborough — the shapeshifting actress whose name is on everyone’s lips — has lived in Los Angeles since 2010. But right now she’s back in her native England, where she’s filming the HBO miniseries The Palace, a period political satire co-starring Kate Winslet. A swanky hotel tucked discreetly at the end of a narrow alleyway in London’s Soho district serves as her temporary home. Riseborough, 41, enters the hotel’s busy restaurant precisely at the agreed-upon hour — 3:30 p.m. Tea time, although she will be drinking coffee.
Nothing in her demeanor suggests someone who nine days earlier had been nominated for an Academy Award — her first, no less, after 20 prolific years of dues-paying. She is petite, practically swimming in a striped wool overcoat. Her hair is cropped boyishly short — this for another recent role, playing British Vogue editor Audrey Withers in Lee. Right now, however, it gives her...

Andrea Riseborough will not be stripped of her Oscar nomination for best actress.
After a review of the awards campaign for the indie drama To Leslie, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday (31 January) that the 41-year-old actor’s nomination stands.
Days after this year’s nominations were announced, the Academy shared a statement saying it is “conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees”.
Actors including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston and Jane Fonda all pushed for Riseborough’s nomination, as did her fellow Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett, but it is believed that Riseborough called upon her Hollywood peers to spread the word.
Following a brief release in cinemas in October, the drama To Leslie made just over 27,000, which positions it as one of the lowest-grossing movies to have ever received an Oscar nomination.

Till director Chinonye Chukwu has shared a powerful message about the treatment of Black women in Hollywood following the 2023 Oscar nominations.
On Tuesday (24 January), the nominations were announced for the 95th Academy Awards. You can read the full list of nominees here.
Some of the biggest snubs and surprises came in the Best Actress category, after Till star Danielle Deadwyler and The Woman King’s Viola Davis failed to earn nominations, despite being deemed frontrunners in the category.
The acclaimed biopic Till, in which Deadwyler plays Mamie Till-Bradley, the mother of murdered 14-year-old Emmett Till, did not receive any nominations.
Following the announcement, director Chukwu shared a photo to Instagram in which she is seen crouching next to a woman in a wheelchair, smiling up at her.
“We live in a world and work in industries that are so aggressively committed to upholding whiteness and perpetuating an unabashed misogyny towards Black women,...

Imelda Staunton, who on Nov. 9 will become the third actress to portray Queen Elizabeth II on the Netflix hit The Crown (and the first to play her since her death), came to Hollywood’s attention as the nurse to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Viola in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love. But it was her leading turn in 2004’s Vera Drake that established Staunton, then 48, as a talent to be reckoned with.
The film, from British auteur Mike Leigh, tells the story of a modest woman living in London in 1950. Her day job is housekeeper; but on the side, and unbeknownst to her husband and children, she performs abortions for young women. She takes no money for the act (to her knowledge — one of Vera’s collaborators charges clients behind her back), which she performs via a dangerous technique that involves a syringe, carbolic soap and disinfectant.
