Can't wrap my head around it...

Why on this season the emphasis is on the African American culture without any actual historical background to other cultures? In this episode, the Hispanic culture wasn't even mentioned or any other culture that clearly has its impact on the dancing industry and history. This season became politically correct in the worst way. Truly it feels like we are being brainwashed and the people there intentionally show only one side, on the emphasis on ONLY one side. 👎

Disappointing episode full of historical misreading

Love the series, but this episode is the worst. After the opening No need to bother to watch the rest - Attributing latest top dance moves to the ghetto and black dances in the US. FYI before twerk - Brazilians had funke which makes twerk a copy cat for kindergarteners.

Excellent, pointed examination of cultural appropriation

Essential viewing!

This episode concisely pinpoints the importance of recognizing the historical roots of various dance forms. More importantly, it spotlights how corporations and people in power appropriate those forms without giving compensation, support, or acknowledgment to the communities and cultures in which they developed.

I have been teaching African-American jazz dances for over 20 years. This episode is spot-on and I can't recommend it more as an introduction to this topic.

Not the episode I was hoping for
anna-m-dirienzo3 October 2021
This was an incredibly misleading, poorly done episode. First, there needed to be more said about the history of dance around the world. There are cultures still performing dances that are thousands of years old - some of those dances needed a moment of celebration. Their true goal here was to talk about viral hip hop dance crazes in the US, while ignoring the influence of every other culture in this country besides African American. Other cultures like Hispanic, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Indian have all have influenced the way we move, yet they are completely ignored. Then, you are made to feel bad about yourself for appreciating the dance expression by using the highest firm of flattery: performing it yourself. As a first generation American who has had the pleasure of being influenced by many cultures growing up, I'm very disappointed.

This is about dance CRAZES, not just dance. You know, VIRAL. What craze did they leave out? Irish dancing, though awesome, is not and never was viral Geez.

Worst episode
Originalcruelty17 October 2021
This is the worst episode I've seen - the rest have been informative, but this one appears to be pure propoganda.

Making the full episode about how whites have stolen dance from blacks, is really missing just how much the thousands of cultures worldwide have had some input on what we call dance today. Crazes worldwide aren't all centred around hip hop dance styles. Such a narrow world view.

As you can see from the comments, everyone can see through it.

Get your act together Netflix. Noone is impressed at your attempt to be woke.

When we say dance crazes we mean european\american-african
neelsmail27 September 2021
We won't say that but that's what it is.

We will give you evolutionary theory of group dance by saying "according to one theory.." and then in the middle of episode we will scorn the term ".. and other dozen diseases..." from 1900s.

We do not have access to wikipedia so we will not get "History of dance" page so we will come up with one of our own.

And of course, this will all be about social media because dance crazes were never about something that appealed to you; it was only relevant when it was on the smartphone "arguably", as we would like to call it and get away with anything, from 1800s.

What you need to know about dance crazes
wolfrahms30 September 2021
First of all, like all things, it was stolen from black people by white people. Latinos do not exist.

Secondly, some individuals did it first, and then some other people copied them, and that's bad.

Finally, people dance because it makes them feel in sync with eachother or something.. Was that important to establish? I dunno. We covered our racial/social justice bases, so I think we're good.

And that's how you get the worst rated episode of an otherwise OK series.

UUURRRGHHH SIIIGGGGHHHH I CAN'T.

One of the worst episodes
qck126 October 2021
Very one sided. Only really about people doing funky moves using mobile devices. How about all the rest about dance. How about all the other dancing. Couple dancing, all those cultural dance, jazz and ballet. So very disappointed. Personally most of the stuff shown was so yawn.

Worst Episode Yet

I was so excited to watch this episode and was so disappointed.

It does not deserve the title of 'dance crazes' - more like African American history of dance since 1920 stolen by whites and Tik Tok influencers not receiving credit (agree with both)

What about Belly Dancing? The Tango? Irish Dancing? Head banging? The list goes on.... Not a single mention of their influence in dance history.

The Latin community is hurting from this episode...what about Rio Carnival? One of the largest dance events on the planet?

Very poorly put together episode.

Weird out of the norm for this series
jennifer014200625 November 2021
Usually I find these episodes well-rounded and very informative. This one... was like they let a scorned AfAm youth take control and did no real fact-checking or weighing in with other sides and it was their story plastered over everything like this perspective is the only and only truth.

But on a more basic note, really? People danced to scare off animals? Because humans never did things for enjoyment, to share their joy with others? Yeah, scaring off animals in a pack with synchronized movement, that's it. That's why we still do a jig together when we encounter a bear in the forest.

There was nothing about Native American history of dance, Hispanic or Latina history of dance, Asian history of dance. It was black and white. It was "it all originated from Africa and our youth had it all stolen."

Sure, there's a problem with stealing ideas, there always has been. Artists work is stolen and great ideas stolen and yes dances too. Not only to AfAms, though, it exists in every culture. Even Walt Disney stole Mickey Mouse from someone else, just tweaking it enough to not be an exact replica.

This wonky episode changed my mind a bit on the validity of this series. If anyone can write any damn thing and the series will greenlight it and send it out, well, it's not what I thought it was. Just some silly people making a show.
